Dude, I love your channel. I was born in 91, but your channel makes me think of what it must have been like in the 50s & 60s. Just doing whatever it took to make POWER!!. You balance the technical how-to with fun entertainment is perfectly done. TBH, the "1000hp or we lose the shop" builds that 99% of other channels do is boring AF because it's not what real people can do. You all are 100% legit true hotrodders!!!!

Rule of thumb on thread engagement is 1.5 times the bolt diameter. 1/2" bolt would have 3/4" of thread engagement, minimum. 5 threads is likely good on smaller bolts, but if you imagine 5 threads on a 1.5" bolt, for instance, you'll see that it's barely engaged. It's a pretty good rule. Loving the show!
@hydrocarbon82
@hydrocarbon82 9 ай бұрын
However if you do the math, the first 3 threads carry the vast majority of the load. It's because there's less bolt stretch down the line. The reality is that 3 threads of those bolts would hold up the entire car.
@wjpreslar
@wjpreslar 9 ай бұрын
If that rule of thumb were completely accurate, then lug nuts would be much longer than most are. If you are looking for a better safe than sorry approach, then sure, but there is a reason engineers don't specify couplers over nuts. The 3 full threads of engagement rule of thumb is mathematically better.... And cleaner.

Spaghetti wiring, gauges hanging from the column shifter... pretty sure I must have worked on that dime piece at one time, LOL. Got brakes and steers and a gives a whole new meaning to "drive by wire", I love it! Fantastic job on the 4-link fab.

1:03:45 PNDLR - a lot of 50's cars had low-gear and reverse right next to each other so you could switch between the two and rock the car back and forth to get unstuck! My 59 caddy has the same shift pattern

@ 1:05:38 Great explanation on the t-shirt. The same happens with a distributor 180 out. It seems to always happen at the big shops.

It looked to me like you mounted the shocks with the dust cover down,mounting the shock upside down like that will collect water & dirt in the cover defeating its purpose! Other wise looks good!

Just did an LS swap in a ‘56 Oldsmobile that sat for 48 years. Laughed so hard at the throttle wire through the firewall. I did the exact same thing to drive it the first time.

The timing on this is awesome, i just bought my uncles 54 Buick Special, it has a 264 nailhead, with the original drivetrain, and the rear lever shocks. I'm wanting to upgrade to an open drivetrain and replace the lever shocks because mine work, but leak.
