Thank you for this memory. When Katrina hit, I was going through chemotherapy for breast cancer. I survived Katrina and breast cancer and I’m here today to say there’s no better place to live then St. Bernard Parish. Stay safe everyone.

We live 100 miles inland. Our town, was in the worst part of the storm once it moved inland. The dirty side, as they call it, obliterated our town. No power for a month, we were so hot, filthy, hungry and miserable. This pales in comparison to what the people on the water suffered. It was the scariest day in my memory. Our little wood frame house was shaking, the walls were breathing, the roof would lift and then go down again until the next huge gust. The sound of that 129 mph gust coming would scare the strongest among you. I thank God for keeping us safe. For those who lost their lives, I’m so sorry. They will forever be in my prayers. We all be came one in our little town. True love and compassion was shown amongst neighbors and the town. I pray we never go through one again. We’ve since built a small shelter. God is good. A day I’ll never forget just how small and helpless we felt 💔🙏

I begged my parents to leave but they wanted to stay. I told them they would be swimming,but they refused. I stayed with them at chalmette high and went to rescue my neighbor and saw many dead bodies floating. I was in a 10’flatboat with a friend and fence boards as paddles. We got my neighbor though. Sad days.

it is hard to put hurricane katrina into words. but i think looking back on what happened gives us a view of the true st bernard spirit. i was there as a firefighter and still to this day can not really tell others what it was like during the storm. its like a 30 second preview of a action movie. but what i saw after the storm defined us as a people. kind, helpful, caring and loving. thanks for the memory of this day!

St.Bernard was my hometown I had moved away before katrina. But My family still lived there. They evacuate to my home. I'll never forget seeing the first images of St.Bernard on TV my sister and I both broke down crying she lost everything her home was in Arabi. And my entire family lost everything. I finally went to see my beloved parish or Da Parish as we called it. And I drove to my childhood home. I stepped out and nearly fell to the ground. Couldn't believe the devastation... Seemed like a war zone. It still makes my heart sink seeing the devastion all these years later! God bless , from a true Challmation

I'm not someone who usually gets emotional with these kinds of things, but I broke down watching this. New Orleans was so destroyed that anyone looking at it at the time probably assumed it was a total loss. Somehow, they managed to rebuild. It's an amazing testament to the willpower and the spirit of the people who live there.

The Lower 9th Ward really was the Ground Zero of this. You can tell how much the government cares about certain neighborhoods more than others - compare the response in Manhattan to the response in New Orleans. About ST RITA'S NURSING HOME. I knew someone that worked as an LPN & what this man said is a DAMN LIE! The Director and Owner went AGAINST families AND their evacuation plan! They lied to families that they were being evacuated, & told the nurses that refused to stay they were cowards, the state would make sure these nurses licenses would be stripped from them and they would NEVER work again! Thank GOD she left! This nurse was very special to me as she was my only SISTER. Unfortunately, we lost her 1 year later to a massive heart attack brought on by the stress of Katrina & taking care of her injured husband. Losing her hurts my soul. But at least she died swiftly and didn't suffer or drown like all the elderly in St Ritas.

I did not experience the event cause I live in Nebraska. But I'll never forget the day my boots hit the ground on September 1st. I've been involved with disaster relief, search and rescue, triage and incident command since 2001. The things I experienced in New Orleans in '05 have stuck with me for sure. I bounced around a lot down there in the 4 weeks I assisted so I'm unsure of the triage location but one of the first victims I encountered was a very distraught 9 year old little girl who was totally separated from her family and absolutely terrified. For 2 days she would not leave my side and every move I made she thought I was going to leave her alone. We were able to reunite her with her 15 year old sister. It was very bittersweet because she also found out they had lost both of their parents. At a different triage location 3 days later I happened to cross paths with an uncle of theirs and were able to reunite them that day. Broke my own rule of not letting my emotions into my mission of service and I pray those kids are doing well today. I have not been there either before or after the disaster and I truly hope the people of the city are doing well today. God bless

Even though I do not live in Louisiana, I can definitely relate to what Katrina Did to this Nation. A little over 15 years later, and some places never recovered from the wrath of this Violent storm. Heres a quote that I kinda thought of: "Just Because a name is gone, doesn't mean the memories go with it" referring to the retirement of Katrina. Though thoughts are still in the memories of many in New Orleans.

It wasn't Katrina that did this to St. Bernard Parish. It was the failed levees of the Corps of Engineers. There was very little wind damage. The damage from the flooding from failed levees was the whole problem. Make no mistake. :(

What happened in St. Bernard is precisely what the opponents of the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet (MRGO, or the Ship Channel) were afraid would happen. The levee system of that thing was obliterated when the eye of that storm passed right over St. Bernard Parish.
@TheRealSwampOperator
@TheRealSwampOperator Жыл бұрын
Don't blame the corps of engineers. The corps of engineers didn't build a huge city in the middle of a bowl, surrounded by water. I mean christ , it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that disaster coming. Hurricanes have been tearing shit up on the gulf coast since the Gulf Coast came to exist.. hell almost all of it was completely under water centuries ago. There was a reason they had to build the levees to begin with . The damned bowl flooded everytime it rained within a hundred miles.. But they just kept filling and filling the bowl full of money and people and assets.. the corps of engineers aren't anything but ants where nature is concerned. The failure come not only from the evacuation effort.. but most of all the totally botched government response
@dedericard6725
@dedericard6725 Жыл бұрын
@@TheRealSwampOperator you are obviously uninformed about St Bernard Parish, the focus of my comment. The back levees “protecting” the area from the ill-conceived Mississippi River-Gulf Outlet (MRGO) were built from soil on the swamp side and the waterway was allowed to expand far beyond its original designed width. To prove its culpability, it was subsequently decommissioned and closed off, allowing the land to recover and the waterway to shrink back.

My parents lived in a double directly behind the Home Depot on Judge Perez. They were not going to evacuate. Everyone in our immediate & extended family kept calling them insisting, demanding and downright getting very angry with there refusal to leave. They finally gave in. It took 18 hours to get to Panama City Florida where my husband's family live. Then FEMA set us up at the Boardwalk on the beach. We were there for 1 month. When we took my Dad to Chalmette to see his house, my husband and I had to hold on tight to him because the swamp mud was 1 ft thick and slimy. When Dad walked through the front door he broke. He cried so hard he didn't make a sound. Then his screams came belting out, over and over "Oh NO! Oh My God, NO"!! EVERYTHING WAS DESTROYED! Then he saw his mattress which was still shoved up into the attic rafters. He turned to us and started crying out "I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I'm so sorry. Please forgive me!" I didn't understand why he was saying this and then he said, "We gave you such a hard time when you were just wanting us to be safe. THANK YOU FOR SAVING OUR LIVES! We would have drowned. Oh, that would have destroyed you all!" He was 79 & Mom was 77 when hurricane katrina destroyed our beloved Chalmette, Arabi, New Orleans and all it's suburbs. My sister died a year later from the stress of losing her home, having to constantly move to keep employed, being in a major car accident where her husband was paralysed and caring for him. All while they lost their benefits because of reasons beyond their control. Her husband succumbed to his quadriplegic paralysis 1 year after she died. I, like MANY affected by the losses of the storm, suffered debilitating depression for 10 years. After many many years of therapy I have risen above and out into the sun again. But hurricane season still sends me into severe bouts of anxiety and PTSD. I had to stay for hurricane Ida. NO hotel would accept my 4 dogs. 2 to a room max was EVERY ONE of their replies. I even offered to rent 2 rooms. ALL the hotels refused my offer stating "Due to their past experience of more than 2 pets ending up alone in one room while people stayed in the other room we cannot allow it." Next time I will pack us all in our 2 vehicles, get out of harms way & just live in our vehicles until it is safe to return. I HAVE NO OTHER CHOICE

4:45 this is the worse imagine you could ever see living in south Louisiana. These big ones all look similar but each one is a bit different. Just went through it again with Ida. Realizing a cat4-5 will hit your town will put an indescribable pit in your stomach. The last look you give the inside of your home, the look back as you drive away to evacuate. Coming back to devastation is a community mourning like no other. It’s not just the hours of the hurricane that devastates, but the many weeks, months and even years after. It changes something inside of you and every year, the end of August is just different. We relish the years when it’s quit, but the mourning and trauma remains.

If you are watching this now, please know that Hurricane Ida's impact has been no less devastating, it just hit areas that are less 'popular'. As one fireman told me 5 weeks ago, 'we learned NOTHING from Katrina. We didn't plan better, we didn't have resources planned/available any better, and we didn't inform our future on any current natural disaster. We plan for everything to be 'ideal'.'' Human nature 'rolls' with what is already extant. We're no better off now, because our leaders learned NOTHING from past experience. Do not rely on the government to protect or save you. That is not their objective. Optics is what rules... what people 'believe' counts for more than 'what is the case.' Look out for your neighbours. They will look out for you. That's the best you can hope for.

I was there, and still here actually. Words can't describe what it was actually like. Just as the previous people said, it wasn't the storm it's self but the levees that did it. I literally just left from working for the levee board. The pictures and videos they have in their archive room are very disturbing. I need people to understand that the levees are man made and the reality is that they were never built to keep the water out, even though they do provide that little protection for us. They are designed to keep the surge from knocking our homes off of the foundation. Their designed in a way that the water slowly rises instead of a wall of water hitting us. Hoping we can pump the water out of the city using the inner city pump stations and sector gates blocking off certain waterways. We are literally a bowl in a bowl. Its nobody's fault but our own. We decided to build and live here and its something we have to deal with. And yes it is in emergency managements plans that if the city itself is EVER in ANY threat of flooding, they are supposed to blow up the outside levees to save the city itself. And with Katrina they DID NOT DO IT, because a barge did it for us. And to everyone saying they blew them up. Trust me, from first hand experience they were NOT blown up during Katrina. In Hurricane Betsy yes they did, to save the city. The sound the 9th ward residents heard were the levees failing and a 10' to 15' wall of water pouring into St Bernard, oh and the big barge hitting the houses directly across the street from the levee that failed. The entire state of Louisiana had over 50 levees brake and breach at the time of landfall, 28 of which were on the East and Westbank levees of NewOrleans and with only 45 to 50 employees we could only do so much physically and also by state and civil service law. "SOME" city officials did their absolute best with their hands tied up in red tape laws and bs. The others that had the power to do what was needed, AND I WONT SAY ANY NAMES BUT THE LOCALS KNOW WHO THEY ARE. DIDNT DO SHIT BUT SEE HOW THEY COULD MAKE A PROFIT OFF OF THIS. MR.CHOCOLATE CITY. One of them worked for us at the levee board, formally West Jefferson levee district and he got put in jail and fired because of it. Why don't you locals see West Jefferson or East Jefferson Parish levee district anymore? Because they literally robbed Fema and Army Corp. for money. I won't get into exactly how but they did. And now the guy responsible is a car sales men now. Went from a 6 figure job to a 5 figure over night. Well that was after the state and federal government had their fun with him. Because of the event of Katrina, the city levees are now managed, not owned by South East Louisiana Flood Protection EAST and WEST. They were formed to replace the East and West Jefferson levee district. As of today they're the reason we have brand new levees much higher and stronger. BUT THEY'RE STILL MAN MADE AND CAN FAIL AT ANYTIME IN SUCH EVENTS. We now have some of the best hurricane flood protection systems / levees ever in this country. I pray we never have to deal with that again. But just know, that if the CBD is ever threatened, St. Bernard and ALL surrounding Parishes levees will be blown up and flooded again to save the city of NewOrleans itself. BLOWING THEM UP IS IN THE CITY AND STATES EMERGENCY MANAGEMENTS PLAN IF NEED BE. So be aware and take note of that this hurricane season and every season in the future. ✌️🙏🫡

I was just in New Orleans and had it from a local which was brought up by Spike Lee in a documentary some years ago. The Levy was blown up on purpose ro save the French Quarter which has high tourism. The Nineth Ward and St Bernrnad Parrish is only about 4 miles from the French Quarter.

FEMA also asked for emergency funds and powers before going in and were granted emergency powers and funding by W Bush and never gave it back let's not forget that either. I remember us saying FEMA has Failed in their mission. Isn't that what they are there for was federal emergency management? They couldn't manage shit when Katrina hit and the insufficient levees broke! Then they piled everyone in the SuperDome for soooo long with unliveable conditions while FEMA took forever saying they need more time and money. Really FEMA? People were literally pooping on the floor everywhere in the Superdome. Fuck FEMA. And Fuck W Bush.

I hate this time in my life and the memories from it. I also hate NOLA. I drove through the storm after evacuating my family. I was a Corpman in the US Coast Guard and was supposed to be excited about the birth of my 2nd child. Instead, I got recalled and found myself praying I was going to survive to see my family again. The chaos, the violence and lawlessness, the absolute collapse of civilization, the level of destruction....I will never set foot in NOLA ever again. That city should have been written off as destroyed and left abandoned.

Bc the culture is like no other and the food is goated. Atleast I can evacuate if one does hit. They’ve built the levees better since Katrina to prevent the significant flooding and we’ve had hurricanes hit ab the same strength as Katrina recently and didn’t have any flooding especially not all the way to the roof. You damn northerners claim to be so smart🤡 go do some research

U know if they would just stop letting society categorize colors clothes n toys brainwashing to think certain item or for a certain gender only in just let them wear any color in clothes etc they lik no matter there gender most probably wouldn't feel the need to transition just to lik a color ! If a boy wants to wear a pink dress in play with dolls the parents automatically assume he must be a girl so they make him a girl full in convice him if he likes those things hes a girl bc society says only female wear pink dresses and play with dolls me personally i think when parents see there son wanting things they see as girly n if they let him they fear people might think hes gay so saying hes trans instead of being a lil boy who just likes to wear pink dress is more convenient for them so they don't have to explain that there son who not gay or trans just lik wearing dresses. In just bc its rare a boy express he likes pink doesn't mean other boys dont alot do there just not comfortable saying it bc parents tell them u cant lik that color your not a girl from early age ..who cares what gender he is they should be able to wear and like whatever they want without being labeled as gay or trans over their preference ! My son like baby dolls when people would ask y let my male child play with a girl toy in if i wasn't afraid that would make him gay. Or get tesesd I was first u can't make someone gay there born that way n 2 its a toy he will eventually get bored with in toss it to the side the same way he does his hot wheels! In when hes grown he wont care what people think of him bc i let be himself. There alot a parents there color gender neutral They surround there newborn with nude tones in as they grow they introduce colors there child likes in they dont say no thats a girl color thats a boy color its so they don't feel like theres something wrong with them if they lik a color etc
