I've always said the factors on us missing out on the double that season was Liverpool winning 11 out of 12 after we beat them at Anfield, as you say Big Nev getting injured for the run-in and the hugely influential Peter Reid only playing 15 league games all season due to injury. That criminal defeat at Oxford so late in the season also has a lot to answer for.

What an advert for the great rivalry between the two best teams in the mid 1980s. Liverpool went on an amazing run after this defeat to pip Everton for the league title. At Wembley Howard Kendall made a rare mistake by recalling Derek Mountfield and Paul Bracewell in the final, after they had missed many games through injury. Kevin Richardson and Alan Harper who rarely had bad games would have given the blues a better balanced team. I recall the game and Everton were a bit over run in second half after being comfortable until the Gary Stevens misplaced pass to Molby that changed the game. Selling both Lineker and Richardson were major blunders that started the decline in the late 1980s.
