Steak Review With An Awkward Ending

Order food - then staff go to kitchen, kitchen has a queue of orders waiting, steak eventually gets cooked, then rested for 7 mins before slicing. 25 mins isn't much at all. Prob feels longer because you're on your own. Cheers

I echo most of the comments and wouldn't say 25 minutes wait for steak is that long. You were offered a free dessert. Either take it or not. I wouldn't use it as leverage for money off the bill if you chose not to have it

25 mins is not unreasonable. The food was good and as stated the Service was good. The fact you got offered a free desert was a nice gesture in itself when they probably didn't have to...so yes you probably should have just paid the full bill - I certainly would have.

I'm totally with you on the slice or no slice makes no difference to me, it looked a great steak and chips. However 25 - 35 minutes for a freshly cooked meal of that quality is more than acceptable, if it were any less I'd be a little dubious.

If I want my meat sliced, I'll order Stroganoff, or a stir-fry. If I fancy a steak, bring me what I'm paying for, and if it's cooked incorrectly, take it back and do it again.

Had a similar experience at Hawksmoor in Dublin. Table reserved for 7.30 but left sitting in the bar area until almost 8.20. The lady was extremely apologetic and offered two complimentary glasses of the house red wine with the steaks. The food and service at the table was excellent but when the bill arrived they charged for the two glasses of wine. When I queried this pointing out that we had been offered the wine by the lady "greeter" they said that they had not been informed of this and that she was no longer there to confirm for them. I ended up paying the full bill but emailed Hawksmoor to inform them that I found the situation a little awkward and they have offered me complimentary wine on my next visit. Problem there is I was visiting from the Far East and may never get back again!

I lived in France for 10 years and going out for a meal was a complete event, no rushing, plenty of waiting between dishes, staff wanted you to enjoy the ambiance of the evening, to the French eating out is to be an occasion to enjoy not rushed, here in the UK we are programmed to be rushed how many times have you just eaten your meal and the waiter pushes to bill in front of you because the restaurant may be busy, I politely tell them to go away I will call for the bill when I am ready or I will leave now if you give me the meal on the house, your choice. You would only mention it again if you wanted something other than the free dessert already offered (money off the bill), the original server had delt with the situation so why did you feel the need to bring it up again? And 25 minutes for food of that quality is not a long time and did not warrent a complaint or even a mention in the first place.

I think everyone is different. I almost expect to wait for good food & wouldn’t blink if it was 30 mins or so. In that scenario wouldn’t expect anything off or back. But each to their own. Looked fantastic!

I’m a neutral and don’t ever comment so please don’t pile in on me. I think what gets people’s goat is that you have a couple of vids questioning the service, and I think this one went a bit too far on the bandwagon. 25 mins is not an unacceptable wait for steak, because your assuming the chef is stood there waiting for only your order which they’re not. When they offer to give you free x y and z, to pay for it is taken out the tips jar I’m afraid. Not everywhere, but I’ve been a server for years. So I think it just seemed a bit OTT. Some things can be easily rectified too like when you say they took the menu off you at the last 2 places, just ask for it back, sorted. I like the fact your having a look at customer service but don’t go down the dark path that some people have of looking for stuff to complain about.

Hi Darren. Another terrific Blacklock meal. I think if you’d had their great starter, you wouldn’t have noticed the wait. Also if you’d been with someone it wouldn’t have seem so long. I’m pretty sure they would have boxed up the dessert for you to take home. Anyway, you’ve made me want to go there again. Thanks.

I'm not a trained c hef or anything - but I cut a steak after resting, to stop the inside cooking further (as warmth from the bark penetrates further). It gives more control over temperature.

HI Darren Another great video well food looked good ,ok there was some delay in getting food to you so they apologised and offered you a free desert. At least they apologised and you were havy with this so you had a great meal and just paid the bill. I cannot see the point unless the food was cold . Again thank you for sharing.

Nice to be offered free desert - I would probably mentioned the offer and said we’re too full - could we maybe have a coffee, otherwise would have paid the bill. Personally wouldn’t mind waiting 25 mins - hate to be rushed in and out when visiting somewhere I’ve looked forward to.

Its POSSIBLE one of the kitchen staff didn't turn up for whatever reason. My ex-brother-in-law said to me (he was a sous chef) that one of the things that bleeps the flow in a kitchen is to be down a staff member.

I find if you don't order a starter it can sometimes delay things. Not sure why. Also time does *seem* to go slower if dining alone and you can he discriminated against. eg: Poor table by the loos, made to feel awkward 'are you dining alone tonight'. Sometimes no table available despite an empty restaurant.

I don't like my steak already cut up, for a couple of reasons. I have cooked steaks in restaurants for years and I prefer to throw a steak back on the grill for a minute or two if the customer complains that it is undercooked, and that is hard to do if it is already cut up. Also if they cut it up before it is served the more likely it will lose its juiciness and be drier and tougher. And also you said that you ordered that medium, that didn't look medium to me, that looked more like medium Rare...

Darren again you give us food for thought 🤔First. When ordering something to be cooked fresh, such as steak a 20 minute wait seems fair,also in a busy service maybe a tadge more time could be allowed. However, servers should just inform you the customer that waiting time is ect ect. Now the main question. When you were offered a free " pudding " to sweeten the deal. The server who made the offer, if she was going off shift or even on a break. Then she should have informed the other server's. Would I bring it to the attention of the new server? Yes, again it's how to handle it. Me, I'd say :" my other server, offered a free dersert. Which I can't eat at the moment, being full after that great meal, but maybe you could check if I could get it to go? Or even trim the bill? 🤔. It's not really up to the customers to chase the matter, but do you just forget it or not? Me I'd chase. Allan&Family PS I've never had a bad experience in any Blacklock's. Food or service

25 mins wait for a steak is fine in my opinion, time to cook it, rest it, etc. Where I draw the line is them cutting it up, my parents stopped doing that years ago for me. And unless you are going to shovel it in bit after bit, half of it will be stone cold by the end.

When I do a steak at home I slice it thin as possible...goes down a bomb !!!
