I think the single best thing about this show, is how you understand the ecosystem without a single, overdrawn moment of exposition. Just animation and extreme detail. You get a real sense that this planet and the life upon it, was already in motion before Humans got here. It truly made my Thursdays worth waiting for. Fingers Crossed for a Season 2.

One thing about Steak is that the videos he makes feels like it's out of love for the things he's talking about. People can write scripts about "This thing is good, go watch it." But it takes a whole other creature to be able to write a script with witty dialogue, fun facts of the people behind the thing, and genuine admiration. In an age where video essays and commentaries have become opportunities to rant/bully the industries/big corporations/ buzz word buzz words (Sometimes for good reasons), it's nice that Steak just delivers good vibes. Not like he isn't capable of being critical, even then he knows when to roll back because he knows people don't come to see his videos just to listen to his rants. You're a gem, Steak. See you space cowboy.

Hollow was never purely a malignant force and without power, Kamen wasn't either. I also really appreciated the point about Levi being able to create art because he didn't have human concerns to attend to. How accurate.

More than anything, Scavengers Reign and shows like it that focus on life are heavily carried by their atmosphere. You touched on it near the end, but I can’t honestly think of many shows that are able to capture that natural ennui of just…staring at an animal and watching it be, as sufficiently and succinctly, as Scavengers Reign. You need that total confidence, that feeling of living on another world to carry it hard, and the way the animation handles this by not just being grounded but so “naturally” vibrantly (it’s a hard feeling to describe, seeing nature unfold in bloom but also feeling a distinct feeling of “oh fuck you’re not supposed to be here, blend in) is truly a spectacle.

Thank you for making me know this series, I get the feeling of those fantastical creatures that could work, monster hunter at its core was always based on that, yes you also go whack em with their bones to wear their skin, but at the base there is the idea of learning to work with the wildlife as resources, studying the animal and the environment so that you can whack em better And sometimes you don't really whack em, you stay hidden in a bush and watch them patrol their territory

This show just hit Netflix and I watched it because of your recommendation. Loved it. I didn’t understand Sam’s arc until finally watching your analysis and I agree with you. I also think it’s interesting that Sam’s story of his past revolves around going up a hill to see a lady under a tree and that’s where his story ends. It’s also really cool how we as an audience view Kris as heartless or evil for abandoning Barry but are fine with the “law of the jungle” flora and fauna trying to kill our protagonists every waking moment, just because of Kris’ humanity.

Oh wow I actually remember that Smithsonian "Animal" book! (Mine had a different cover too though.) Wow I haven't thought about that in years, but I remember LOVING it and thinking it was particularly great. Thanks for the nostalgia bomb! (Heh I also remember feeling so betrayed when I came upon that Shark Week Megalodon special and seeing a 50 foot clear shark shadow in the ocean and for a second believing it. To this day they still blew my trust in them and haven't even flipped to that station.)

Glad to see you back and talking about this one. One of those shows where one of my friends recommended it high and low as it came out episodically, but I kept putting it off to wait for the full season. And then when I finally watch it, I go on a full night binge that leaves me with a migraine aura at 5 am and the kind of existential peace so many works only try to grasp for. The part where you mentioned the "speculative documentaries" reminded me of the old series that were made by speculative zoologists (the ones you mentioned were also), the modern speculative works are astonishing and were definitely an inspiration to scavengers reign. The stuff like the works of Alex Ries and the future humans books (notably more pop-culture-y than even those documentaries)
