The best shotguns are a steal because no one knows about them. Sure, you can purchase a good shotgun brand new off the sales floor. Alternatively you can look for one of these gems on the used rack and you're bound to find a great bargain for an exceptional shotgun! Look for a Winchester Model 12, a Winchester Model 25, or a J.C. Higgins Model 20. These are all perfect examples of fine shotguns that are way too cheap on the used market. Keep an eye out for these amazing finds and you won't regret it! I hope you find this video useful. If so give it a like, subscribe, write a comment, and check me out on Patreon for more terrific stuff! Thanks for watching.

My 'steal of a deal' in shotguns is my Ithaca Model 37 in 12 gauge, made in the late 1940's that I purchased form my uncle. He barely used it and it is a genuine 'safe queen'. Beautifully made, decent walnut and still retaining about 90% of it's original blueing, it is a real beauty. He told me that he wanted to get his money out of it, so he offered it to me at his purchase price of $40. (No allowance for inflation!)

The model 37 I used in Vietnam when I walked point, barrel was stamped Joliet Prison. How it ended up there is a mystery to me. Model 12 Winchester will slam fire as my 37 would, handy in combat.

I always liked the Model 12, perhaps because of it's long history and use. Holding an old gun is like visiting an old farmstead with the old farm house and barns. You can't help but wonder about the lives of those who lived there on the farm; or used that old gun to put food on the table.

When I was a teenager, I was invited to go with one of my class mates down to his fathers hunting and fishing property. The mans name was Ernie Simmons ( maker of the Simmons ventilated ribs). He handed me a shotgun to shoot some clays. It was the first time I had ever fired a shotgun, and I held it loose just like I did when shooting my .22 and my air rifle. It was a model 12 Winchester and it smacked me pretty hard. I think my nose was sideways for a few minutes. Since then, I have owned many 12's and they are a very good gun. Thanks for the video and you stay safe.

Hahahah that’s funny. Those shotguns will get ya if you’re not careful. I have an 1897 Winchester that I got from my grandfather. The bolt exits out of the back of the gun. It’ll snag the webbing between your index finger and thumb. My grandfather used to call this “the snakebite”. Never got me, but people who know will tell you.

Very enjoyable. I also like the old working mans shotguns from my youth. I have picked up several over the years. I think the eight dislikes as of this time are people like myself that know after people watch this the prices are going to go up. I paid one hundred twenty U.S. dollars for my model 20 this year out of a pawn shop. Not all pawn shops know guns. This pawn shop thought it was a twenty gauge and that the patent number was a serial number (pre serial #). I suppose I could have educated them but I was more interesting in getting a bargain and was haggling price it was originally marked at $150 which I thought was fair but a dollar saved etc. Glad to meet someone that likes the old guns this much. Warm regards from your newest subscriber!

I have had 2 model 12 Winchesters in the past. Back in the 64 - 67 I had one with a compensator very similar to the choke tube you talked about then in the 70's I bought a used WINCHESTER MODEL 12 FEATHERWEIGHT, MANF: 1960, 2 /34" CHAMBER, 30" BARREL FULL Choke that I kept up until 4 years ago. Model 12 Pumps are good guns. My left arm was having trouble working the pump from an old motorcycle accident, I had to keep the barrel pointed down to work the action then raise to shoot. I sold it and settled for a 12G Coach gun Double 12 single trigger.

This is one pissed off Canadian viewer, that was glad to see a new one from you. Some of us are starting to prepare the fight against this, so we'll see what happens, but this particular government has a proven record of doing what it's ideologically interested in, and not what people want, so we'll see. They have a minority government, so once the opposition gets off its butt and nominates a new leader, we can get to the bussiness of ending this "regime" and start over. Thanks for the video.

This is generally my favorite type of content from you, identifying unknown/undervalued/sleeper quality firearms of all types. This allows those of us with somewhat short pockets to enjoy some of the finer things in life, while possibly making sound investments at the same time. I'd rather have 10 high quality sleepers than 1 prestigious safe queen for the same investment. I'm not even a big fan of pump shotguns, never really have been, but you motivated me to go place a low bid on a beater (but mechanically sound) 20g Flite King! You can never have too many quality loaners for the next dove shoot! I was actually quite surprised how reasonably priced good condition examples of the same are. Thanks, and please keep uncovering these unpolished jewels for us.

Sir; Thank you for the time and effort you put into your videos. I've learned much from them, and especially enjoy the " international " flavor of many of them. We here in the U.S. are sometimes insular and limited in our outlook on things, including firearms. While I do own several "black " rifles, my favorites are the blued steel and wood examples. The pride of my small collection is a Ruger No.1 in 416 Rigby, of all calibers ! That was purchased after your video of single shot rifles. Thank you for the inspiration.

My father bought a used J.C. Higgins Model 20 in the early 1960's. He bagged a lot of Upland game and Cottontail rabbits with that 12 GA. He had until about five years ago when it was stolen during a home invasion. As you said, it was a very smooth operating shotgun. Thanks for sharing your collection with us.

A beautiful collection of some well represented classic pump shotguns. I have a Model 12 and its variants 1200, 120 Ranger, and a Sears 200 Ted Williams. These shotguns are the smoothest running pumps I have. I agree the 870 is a classic build and a tank in the field, but I always go back to the 1200 or Model 12 because they are just rack like silk...smooth. Thank you for another excellent video!

I have a JC Higgins 20, just the plain vanilla 12 gauge, full choke. My father bought it in the mid-1950's, and gave it to me decades ago. The little round front sight got knocked off in the flooded duck woods of south Louisiana over 50 years ago. It doesn't matter. Just point and shoot. It never hangs up, and you can pump it by just jacking it in the hand holding the stock. It is still my smoothest shotgun, by far. I grab the old JC Higgins every time, and leave the 1957 Browning Auto5 and the 1980's 870 pump at the house. Highly recommended, and I agree with you, 100%. I have never shot slugs or steel shot from it, however. Only lead game shot and buck shot.

Months back I inquired about a stuck barrel retention knob on a Browning A5. I tried lubrication as suggested and even purchased a specialty tool from Brownells, a pliers with nylon jaws so as not to mar the steel. Nothing worked. I thought about the issue and what may be the constraint. The shotgun is in 99% excellent condition, no rust, no residue from oils or lubricants. I decided the issue may be one of environment. I placed the shotgun in an unused closet with a portable dehumidifier, set the device to run in a continuous mode and closed the door. Every day for the next 10 I opens the closet and emptied the condensate from the reservoir. At the end of the 10 day trial the humidity in the closet had been below 20% for a week (this is the southern US, outside humidity in summer are frequently >60%). I locked open the action, confirmed it was clear, compressed the barrel and the knob turned easily releasing the fore grip and barrel.

A note on the JC Higgins model 20 with the screw in choke tubes: I hunted birds a lot with that gun in the 70's and it did have issues with modern plastic wad field loads. The choke tube would cut a ring of plastic off of the wads and they would accumulate on the outside of the choke tube in the compensator. They were designed for the old school paper shells with card wads. Smoothest pump shotgun I have ever used. Taken many quail and dove over the years with it. It was my fathers gun and since then I have cut the choke tube holder off, added Truglow fiber optic rib mount front and rear ring sights and shot it in several 3 /2 gun competitions with it. It is a no disconnecter action so you can slam fire it almost with the speed of an auto.

I also have 2 of the model 20s. One full choke plain barrel, and one with an interchangeable choke system similar to yours, except the ports are not round holes. Looks more like a shark gill pattern on each side, and screw in choke is about 2 inches long. I got lucky as you did, on my plain barrel one. Found one in near mint condition. The other one has had a lot of use, but still a solid shotgun.

I learned to shoot a shotgun in 1963 and it was a M-12. I ended up shooting nothing except Winchesters and Brownings and had a great collection of M-12s. I used my 32 inch Heavy Duck on the duck opener and the duck closer for years. I used an M-12 for skeet shooting too until money was on the line then I went to a Citori. That choke on the end is called a dog turd. They tend to be loud but they do work, even the cutts.

Another relatively 'good buy' in used shotguns is the Winchester Model 1200..the post-1964 successor to the Model 12. I have one in 16 gauge that I picked up at our local Cabela's store a few years ago. It was primarily a 'sentimental purchase' because it is exactly like the one my Dad had and was the first shotgun I ever fired. My example is in exceptionally good condition nice wood with the original style pressed checkering and jewelled bolt..an earlier production example that still had a walnut stock..later Model 1200's seems like Winchester tried to cut costs by going to stained hardwood stock and eliminating 'frills' like the jewelled bolt. Everybody makes comparisons of the Model 12 with the Model 1200 I find the 1200 to be a very well made dependable shotgun.

Last year I picked up a Winchester model 12 in 16 gauge with the fixed modified choke. 28” plain barrel field grade gun. Found it at my local pawn store for just under 4 Benjamin’s. It’s in great shape with bluing wear under the front of the receiver which is common for hunting guns. I’ve been using it for early dove season in September and then quail & rabbit in the fall. Great field gun, still is.

I have 3 Model 12s in 12, 16, and 20 gauge. The 12 and 16 were made in 1942. The 20 was made in 1938. All three look almost new in the box. The field grades can be had fairly cheap. However move up to higher grades and those guns become expensive as heck. Pigeon grades tend to go for $3000 and up when original and in 95% condition. Some of the engraved models are in the tens of thousands range. 28 gauges are rare and extremely expensive. The also made a Model 42 in 410 gauge. I have a field grade that I paid $900 for about 25 or more years ago.

I just found out about the Model 20, and was lucky enough to find one in “like new” condition. It really is like a 1/2 Remington 31, and 1/2 Winchester 25. The slick action is like the Remington 31, which was designed to compete with the M12, and was dubbed the “ball bearing action” It’s really just a side eject model 17 Remington, which was copied by Ithaca, to become the 37 Featherlight, which is probably the smoothest pumping gun in existence,

The others work as good as new. I prefer to use those old shotguns before the Remington 870s, Baikal and Silver Eagle I also have. The ones that I like more? It’s hard to beat the 16 gauge Ithaca as a field gun. It’s the perfect balance of light weight and knock-don power, and buit on a gauge-specific receiver, so it and the 16 gauge M12 Winchester( built on a 20 gauge receiver) actually do “carry like a 20 and hit like a 12”

Just picked up a 12Ga JC Higgins for $111 out the door. I'd like a model 12, but where I live, they are $450-$700 depending on the pawn or gun store. At those prices, you can get a nice new pump Shotgun! That's not to say the build quality & action of the Model 12, isn't to be admired, but one look on Gun Broker will tell you that the days of sub $300 Model 12's in pawn shops is over...

I would like to buy a 16 or 20 gauge model 12. Problem is that most sellers overprice them. I regularly scan Gunbroker for one. Junkers are listed for Around $400. Decent ones are typically listed for $550 to $700. Too rich for my blood for a used pump gun. Most people must agree because the latter almost always have zero bids.

Hi Tommy - I didn't realize that they had moved up so much. Model 12s used to be all over for 400. Maybe the 16s and 20s were soaked up and now the numbers out there are low. The Ithaca 16s and 20s are superb as well - I'm sure you know.

Enjoyed your video, as always Talking about “slick” pump shotguns I think about the best is the Remington model 31. It was an expensive gun and had trouble competing with the model 12. I have lots of shotguns but for some reason never got a model 12. I live in a big waterfowl hunting area and here they always sold for a premium on the used gun market. I think that’s not quite as true as it used to be. I’ve always wanted to get one and turn it into a period Riot gun, watched to many gangster movies Last year I found one in a gun shop , solid condition but not much finish, ugly recoil pad and cutts choke device added. Was made in 1916 and was priced at $150...just what I was looking for ! I bobbed the barrel back to 21 in. and replaced the pad with an older period red head one. Thought about refinishing it but like the patina. Just a fun gun to own

Model 12 Winchesters had not only a fine fit but a smell to them that I loved. 20 gauge nickel steel barrel model of 1912 was the first shotgun I had. The action was so worn it ran lickity split fast. I love those shotguns but it became so hard to get parts for them. I love Browning A-5's, all Benelli's, Franchi, Remington....should have said I love them all but it's the model 12 that brings back memories of hunting when I was a kid. Thanks so much for your video.

I have a JC Higgins with the 2 3/4 inch chamber. I love that gun its been hunted hard by my father and grandfather so the action is quite slick. It kicked like a mule when I was 12. I even bought 2 3/4 inch turkey shells in case I ever decide to take it turkey hunting. I also have a model 12 from my other grandfather, never shot it, I'm afraid of blowing it up. It was made in the nineteen teens and harvested a lot of game. That man only had 4 guns and every one had a purpose. Guess that's the old school way, I have quite a few firearms and a lot of them senseless. I can recall him telling me to sell them all and save one rifle, one shotgun, and one pistol, then Id have a "bunch of money". LOL, Great Depression thinking I guess.

I agree on both the JC Higgins 20 and the Ithaca 37- they are far above and beyond almost anything you can get today for smoothness and build quality. I have a Remington 870 Police Magnum which was a police trade in, and that and the Mossberg 590 are the only two I would put in a similar quality category, and even those the finish and smoothness of the action is not on par with the older guns. I am just glad some of these unsung hero's are popping up for cheap. I paid $200 for the JC Higgins, and $300 for the Ithaca- Most Ithaca's around me are $500-700 - I got a bargain! @@UnitedStatesOfGuns

As to the flight King, Sears never "manufactured" firearms. Instead other manufacturers made firearms for Sears and were branded with the Sears or JC Higgins name. The Sears model 20 is in fact a rebranded High Standard Flight King. Other manufacturers who made firearms for Sears include Stevens, Marlin, Winchester and others. I have a lever action .22 that's branded Sears that was manufactured by Winchester. So if your looking for a great inexpensive shooter (although some collectors do hunt down Sears/higgins) your getting a quality firearm for a steal simply because Sears doesn't command the prices as say a Winchester or High Standard even though in reality they're the exact same firearm.

In the northern mid western states, like Ohio,Indiana,Michigan etc... since around 2014, since these states they changed laws allow hunters to use straight wall cartridges for mostly deer hunting in these restricted states, the used shotguns went down in price dramatically, not unless it is some kind of a antique shotgun. But the rifles calibers in these states like the 45-70, 44 mag, 450 Bushmaster,444 Marlin etc....went way up in price dramatically !

With the rifled tube it shoots 2 inch groups at 50 yards consistently. I think this accuracy is tied to the barrel being pinned, and not removable! With the extra full tube it's a great turkey gun. I prefer the Winchester rotating bolt head design over the tilting block design of Remington & Mossberg..... So that’s how I would choose whether or not a pump shotgun was a good purchase or not. (Nothing wrong with the tilting block, it’s just a preference) Mainly why I prefer the rotating bolt head design is the “Speed Pump” feature, enertia either ejects the spent hull, or at least partially assists in pumping the action...depending on the strength of your ammunition. Any shotgun with the rotating bolt head design will perform this pump assist, whether labeled “Speed Pump” or not....

High Standard was the first gun maker to make a dedicated police shotgun. All police shotguns were made from existing shotgun designs. Model 12 97 31's and so on. HS came out with the "RIOT'' model. Then based the Flight King on it. The flight king is one of the best economy priced shotgun ever made. And was the first pump shotgun I ever owned. The only short coming it has that I know of is the firing pin retaining pin is weak or not heat treated. They tend to ware and break. Over the years I have replaced 20 or so. In this country you see the Flight King marketed under the name Revelation {western auto stores} Ted Williams {Montgomery Wards} J.C. Higgins {Sears&Robuck}. As well as Blue Grass and Belk-Nap Hardware Co. Louisville K.Y. And Fire Stone. When I was a kid you cud buy a gun every where. Well they did not have gun vending machines. But it would have been a good idea.
