Gerry Rafferty is the singer, he also wrote a massive hit called 'Baker Street!'
@MongooseTales Жыл бұрын
Cool! I never realized Rafferty was the singer. When I was a kid listening to this on the radio it sounded to me like Bob Dylan singing on a Beatles track. Glad to know I wasn't the only one! The song fuses some really quintessential features of early '70s pop music.

Great reaction, man !!! Just an FYI, some drummers wrap duck tape around their cow bells to muffle or deaden the cow bell sound, but others do not, especially ones held in the hand so that may explain the difference in sound you are used to. It could also be that they just chose to bring it forward in the mix and put just a tiny bit of echo/reverb on it. Also, as I mentioned elsewhere: "Comedian Billy Connolly was also part of the group The Humblebums with Gerry (formed in Glasgow), but as they continued playing, Billy kept putting in longer and longer joke breaks between songs, so they grew apart ... Gerry moving on to bigger and better things ... Billy becoming a world-class stand-up comedian."

RIP to the great Gerry Rafferty, one of the most underestimated talents in music, before Stealers Wheel he played with The Humblebums, Billy Connolly the great comedian formed this band and Rafferty later joined, Connolly quips when when we played live Gerry Rafferty would often unplug my guitar/banjo so the sound was better.

When I was a little kid for some reason I thought this was Bob Dylan. And I absolutely love the simplicity and the perfection of that rhythm section, between the drums and that wonderful bass guitar line and the hand claps and the percussion and the rhythm guitar. It's a nice little jigsaw puzzle that works perfectly.

This brings back great memories of the crazy, stoned friends I hung out with back then. When this came on the radio we all sang it, and we looked to the left to the "clown" and to the right to the "joker!" We laughed our asses of. So cool!

Wow, I didn't know Lieber and Stoller were connected to this, nor that they were producing songs for bands. They were an incredibly successful songwriting team going back to the late fifties, they wrote tons of great hits for several artists, but probably most notably Elvis Presley, where they penned several number one hits for him.

I had heard this on the radio for years growing up and then when I was young and went to see Reservoir Dogs in a local art theater, not only is the movie fantastic and it made me become a Quentin Tarantino fan, so many of us afterwards said that after seeing that, we will never be able to listen to that song in the same way again, laugh. Fun fact: the female lead singer of the post punk band I was in in my early twenties went on to be Quentin Tarantino's music supervisor for many years and is kind of his right-hand man when it comes to sound effects and music.

When this came out I had just got out of the Navy and worked the overnight shift at a factory that made silicone chips for the electronics industry. It seems like this song was on the radio at least 6-8 times a night, so I always think of that job whenever I hear it.

Great sing-along party song. This was by far SW's biggest hit, but they had other great songs, too ("Star", "Everything Will Turn Out Fine", "Right or Wrong") before their lead singer Gerry Rafferty embarked on a successful solo career with songs like "Baker Street", "Night Owl", and "Right Down the Line". And yes, cowbell :)

man I'm glad I'm old enough to hear music hit songs from the 50s to present in their original format and not from some movie-the imagery of the movie connected with the song would ruin it for me. sorta like the MYV effect when they actually aired music videos.
