maybe the gorvernmnet in zambia is ashamed of what they have done by giving country’s resouces to western countryies, only in exchange of a short time benefits. I think if the people in Zambia all realised this, there will be so much anger against the gorvernment. I am just wondering the day when copper ran out in Zambia, what else can be left for this country to keep going?

I'm in Somalia right now. In my 8 bedroom villa with my family members. I'm laying down next to my pit bull, surfing the web on high speed internet, with my Lexus parked outside. I live on the coast and I've never seen any pirates. In fact piracy is dead. They were a group of angry fishermen looking for reparations for illegal european fishing and dumping of toxic waste on their coasts, so they took up arms and began taking oil ships hostage. The most dangerous thing to be here is a theif. If someone, anyone yells "THEIF!, stop him!" the whole town will chase the theif down and beat them for hours, sometimes to death. I dont blame you for being so ignorant and eating up what you see in the news and on TV. I guess it is like how people assume Canadians live in igloos, Americans are all racist poor hicks or rich celebrities, everyone in Colombia is a cocaine dealer, everyone in Africa lives in a mud hut and has malaria, everyone in Thailand is a trans-sexual and you cant live in Somalia without Al-shabab, Pirates or theives. In short..talk about what you know. Learn about what you dont.

It is a powerful film exploring the gap that has covered Africa for long time. It is high time that all Africans woke up. This film is an example why most African countries rich in natural minerals are poor. It is an eye opener. African states are being manipulated with massive corporations making huge profits. It is the reason why these kind of trade exchanges need to be discussed and debated before any documents are signed. How do all these trade agreements come into existence between these corporations and African states. The discussions in my view should be a people-centred approach rather than greedy politicians with these big corporations.

First, colonialism cripples the country. Then, the IMF and the World Bank swoops in to "save the day". Finally, aided by a leadership only concerned with their personal interests, countries like Zambia continue to be plundered. Sadly, nothing can be done as middle class citizens in the developed world continue to buy stocks from GlencoreXstrata.

The leadership in Africa is very often bought by these large cooperations being corrupt. I am so happy to see the new leadership is taking action in Zambia to make the mistakes from the past correct. I hope my Ugandans take this at heart and demand the same actions from the Ugandan leaders

I would like to apologise for my rant comment 2 months ago. I left it there because it was how I felt at the time. I think this all boils down to standards. Africans need to set higher standards for themselves across the board. I have lived in the USA and in Zimbabwe and the major difference is that standards are set high in America. Nobody here gets handouts at all, they really do work for everything they have. I work way harder in the US as I did in Zimbabwe. What I realised is that the average standard set here is different at home. I went to the best school in Africa in Zimbabwe and we had extremely high standard. The environment we lived in did not allow us to slack off so when we had competitions with other schools we had fewer election pool but we always kicked ass to the point where when other schools saw us on the schedule fear just crept over them. So I urge you young business people in Africa to set your standards higher and that way you can compete on the world playing field.

I get so sick of corporations coming into poor countries and taking their natural resources, and not feeling the least bit obligated to improve the communities they prosper from. These companies would not do this in their own countiries. Is it that they have no value for the lives of these black people. Does their assumed racial superiority make them believe these people do not deserve to live better and in the past many of these communities leaders have enriched themselves and robbed their own of descency. All corporations should have to develop these countries as a part of their agreement to invest and follow the same rules and restrictions required in their own countries, and stop abusing these people all over the world. There will be a price to pay for this inhumane injustice. What they are doing is comparable to slavery.

When people make programmes like these, WHY is there no real information about how various companies managed to secure the rights they have to remove the resources they rely on? I would like to know more about this. And whether the same kinds of deals are being made by those involved in extracting resources from the continent today? Surely these are the practices that need to be stopped if the continent is to receive its fair share and its people to thrive in a world of ever increasing competition and national (and personal) self interest. It’s the start of 2021 and I’m watching in despair. 🙏🏿

Not only France should leave West Africa, but rather the whole EU because at any time it becomes intense with France, another EU-Nation takes up the position and continues from where France has left. $500Billion per anum which France takes away from Francophone Nations plus Mineral Resources for the benefit of the EU and their Currency is just too much, and jet not a single African Leader talks about that, whereas the EU and the WEST behaves as if Africans are incapable of governing themselves. They in turn put the blame on Africans. The most dangerous part is that some young Africans are being deceived to believe in this carnage. Recently a young African Female argued that Colonialism has nothing to do with underdevelopment in Africa. Is it possible to imagine such an assertion irrespective of such carnages taking place before our eyes including how we are being treated as blacks on the Planet??? If you pay careful attention one of the ladies mentioned Glencore paid $50 Million in taxes however the government supplies power to the mining plant at the cost of $150 Million so that means they lost $100 Million. African continent natural reserves combined worth at least tens or even hundreds of trillions of dollars! The blame for African poverty cannot only be blame on foreign companies alone; but African leaders are playing a big role in creating poverty in Africa as well. Most African leaders in the poorest African countries keep their money overseas and not in their respective countries for development. How can Africa eradicate poverty when our leaders only think of enriching themselves and care less of the people they represent? African leaders need to invest the money from resources to African banks and let the bank lend that money to Africans to establish small businesses and that’s how prosperity begins.

Although this was sickening to watch, i'm still left with one question I can't figure out ~ You've got a nation that is rich in resource's, why on earth do you need these multinational corporations? Why not just bring in experts who can teach you how to set up the operations to extract the resource's and receive the wealth yourself, as a nation?
@EllotusFreeholy

Was not my intention to 'blame the victim', as far as I'm concerned the perpetrator's are guilty of crimes against humanity and should not be allowed to continue to walk the earth. And in my opinion that also includes the corrupt ruler's who sell out the nation they are supposed to be representing and seeking the best advantage of.

Those corporations have the knowledge and skills to extract the resources. So countries that invest in education would be able to extract the resources themselves. Many former developing countries have done that. In countries like Zambia there are just too many kids to give a quality education at the moment. But they will probably get there one day. Dont mind people like Wen Ros, their racist, i see a lot of them commenting on this video. They believe there is some conspiracy going on because they dont understand capitalism.

+ Ellotus Perhaps you missed the bit at the beginning where we learned Zambia didn't even have time to get its resources valued. It had foreign "aid" loan repayments due it couldn't pay and the IMF and World Bank pressured it to accept this deal with Glencore or never receive loans again. I'm confident Zambians are well aware of what's needed to extract their resources at profit without needing white saviour experts to come in and tell them how it's done. Zambians know the first thing you need is investment, for instance. Unfortunately, they don't get investors turning up, they get thieving multinational corporations instead right at the time they are being squeezed by those wonderful humanitarian organisations, the IMF and the World Bank. Perhaps we could crowdfund copper mining in Zambia? We'd need to raise several billion, but hey! we'd be teaching those Africans how it's done wouldn't we? You may not be blaming the victims, but you certainly are patronising them.

That Swiss community in the beginning really makes me sad and lose faith in humanity. They’re already so privileged and so rich yet they refuse to even consider giving away some of that wealth to people in need and not just any people, but the people who’s work and suffering they directly benefit from. They wanted 7% tax cut instead of 5%, what difference is that going to make to their already wealthy and comfortable lives? They’re so old and rich yet so greedy and selfish. And it’s not that they don’t know what’s going on, they completely know all the suffering that goes on behind this money that’s coming in but they just choose to ignore it.

Ozalaka Menelik Bullshit, everything is funded by the Chinese. These African countries gives China the resources, and in exchange they give military weapons. It's so funny while you morons still blame the whites, you guys can't even see that the Chinese is your real enemy. More then 750,000 Chinese have settled in Africa over the past decade, and more is on the way. Massive dams are being built, flooding nature reserves. The land is scarred with giant Chinese mines, with "slave" labourers paid less then 1 pound a day to extract ore and minerals. Pristine forests are being destroyed, with China taking up to 70% of all timber from Africa. China is hungry for land, food and energy. The Chinese who now buy half of Sudan's oil, have happily provided armoured vehicles, aircraft and millions of bullets and grenades in return for lucrative deals. Mugabe has even courted the Chinese, offering mining concessions for arms and currency. Chinese made assault rifles and grenades are being used to fuel countless murderous civil wars, often over the materials the Chinese are desperate to buy,

The problem is if these mines are nationalized, the government employees make a mess of it and soon the mines run gigantic losses. Then they start needing funds from the public and taxes rather than contributing to it. While Glencore may not be paying taxes as we want, we should be ok that they are paying taxes based on LME prices. Making it into govt run company is a decision that would decimate both the company and the Zambian tax revenue. It is sad but that is the way economics and human behavior is. Govt workers just want salary and no work and most businesses collapse. I am talking from Indian experience.

Every charity organization no profit or not, makes people rich and they profit on the money and use it for themselves instead of what the actual organization claims it's for. This dates back to days of the church giving for the poor. Money went to the poor but it's quite marginal compared to the actual amount of money donated. It's sick how greedy so many people are. And it's sad because people are afraid their hard earned money is just going to go into peoples salaries.

These type of deals made by those governing African nations like Zambia, only created a vicious circle of dependency on outsiders (foreign investors) and thus puts these Africans at the mercy of another country. Instead wouldn't it have been more ideal if the people in leadership would have thought about their country's future, the value of these assets and have found an ecologically feasible way to mine these copper mines by using African people and Africa's own financial resources. As a people, Africa should have been able to be the one's who sponsor, govern and oversee their own county's assets, thus benefitting the people of Africa in the long haul. These leaders, it seems are were only worried about immediate gratification and their own bank accounts, instead of their nation's well being. Reminds me of the Biblical account of Jacob and Esau, Jacob like the European nations and the USA. knew the long term value of these natural resources and was welling to invest and do whatever it takes to get control of these assets and thus reap long term benefits, like Jacob, who knew the long term value of a birthright, which Esau possessed. On the other hand, the African leaders who sell their people future, and well being for their own gain are like Esau, who sold his birthright for a plate of beans. These leaders only want a quick payoff at the expense of their people. How sad, this type of behavior on the part of leadership is why many African nations don't get the respect they would have otherwise. It's not what African Nations have in their mines it's the ability to know the value of these mines and knowing how to make these assets work for their people that make for rich nations. Because like all things valuable, if the one possessing it does not make good use of it, someone else who knows it's value will. If one wants to be rich, one has to be shrewd as well. This type of shrewd doesn't mean dishonest, by this I mean having the skills and wisdom to know a good opportunity and find a win-win way to make it work for the rightful owners. All this problem is the product of greed and the inability to truly value one's country and people. It's also greed that is drowning Europe and America, because it is creating great disparity in the Western World as well. Greed is like sweet poison, then again wealth in natural resources without good management skills is worthless. So stop chanting to foreigners we need you to give us jobs extending the cycle of dependency and find ways to say to yourselves, we will unite as people and find a solution that will get us ahead, regardless of how hard it will be, or the price that has to be paid, nothing is free. Wisdom it is worth more than any riches, otherwise it's the same old story my friend, the rich get richer and poor get poorer.

It looks like they're trying to blame everyone that isn't from Zambia or black for Zambia's problems. Why not just raise the prices of copper or mining in Zambia without asking questions? Tax the mining! How could that go wrong. The whole world is somehow connected, you can't blame everyone for Zambia's problems who knows someone that knows someone who knows about copper. Once the copper is out of Zambia, that rabbit has escaped Zambians, chasing it afterwards can counts as meddling in other countries' affairs which is too risky and complicated to solve anything. If the money isn't made inside Zambia itself it's a miracle if it gets there at all.

This happens in most poor countries with resources. Some locals with power want to stay in power, help write laws to make deals legal where only they benefit from it. If the population is poor and starving, any deal is better than their current state. Getting real people into a position to represent their people is the only way to make a new deal. If most of the people understood, or had the willingness to learn, the inner workings of their government; they may have more motivation to take action. This can easily happen anywhere around the world, the richest of the rich have more money than the rest of the world combined. How they got in such wealth and continue to keep it, this is where the interest of the people should lie. Considering the conditions of anyone being taken advantage of everywhere in the world, this is the perspective a society needs to make effective changes.

The extremely wealthy have a secret war against the people. Their weapons are not conventional but the opposite. The endgame is to have and keep the most power and influence over the masses. You may be able to win a battle but you cannot win a war if you cannot truly understand the angles at which your enemy will attack. This does not make them evil, either, they're more like David and the people are Goliath. The greatest weapon in this war is convincing the people they are not at war and are, in fact, fighting the same thing...an invisible enemy.

On one hand, people have the "freedom" to chose who represents them but at the same time they elect people that can throw together a few more sentences than them. At the end of the day, these one eyed men oversee the signing of oil, gold and copper contracts worth billions. Then the masses start asking stupid questions like, "why are we still poor?"
