Hey guys, in today's video, I'm going to be showing you how to create a system in which you can takedown an enemy from behind them. So the player can sneak up behind an enemy, and press a button to assassinate them.

Hey man, absolutely loving your videos! First ever project for uni with Unreal and you're teaching me so much more than my prof has! I'm unfortunately having an issue with this that i'm hoping will be a simple fix *nervous laugh* but basically everything is working perfectly apart from the attacking animation. For some reason when I trigger both animations to start, i pop under the map and do the animation, then pop back on the surface once it's finished. Thank you in advance if you take your time out to read this! keep up the inspiring work mate

This video is almost what I needed! Do you think you could do a video on grabing and attacking similar to super smash bros? Example if a target is in range - grab them. then whatever you press you trigger different attacks or throws

thank you greatly for the tutorial! I got everything working. only issue is the enemy ais animation montage doesnt play but besides that all works perfectly :) If you are making a FPS like I am I recommend not messing with the camera when he does the attachcomponenttocomponent youll still get some clipping but it mostly works and with custom animations it shouldn't be an issue. good luck to everyone else on their game making journey :)

@@MattAspland hey man ..got a small question ...for example we in battle with that Ai and somehow get to his back and if press takedown the character will perform that animation ....so normaly if enemy see player we shouldnt be able to do takedowns anymore because the point is takedown should be dowing when enemy dont see player sneaking behind .... i found many tutorial of takedown but they all missing this case scenario

Another awesome video! I do have one issue though, my animations work, just my attack is animating about two feet above where I need him at. Any thoughts? Both animations are animating, just the attacking is way above the target.

Couple questions, you mentioned you have a guide on how to setup the AI which one is it? im not seeing it at a quick glance at your videos but ill look again. also If I wanted to use this on another player, would I just technically skip the AI part and just use multiple player characters to get the same affect? how would I apply this to a multiplayer game?

I'm using the new frank climax stealth animations but when i do the attack it doesn't line up with the body so the stab of the knife doesn't actually hit the right spot of the mesh any idea on how to change that?

Hi mate! Can I ask a resident evil-like zombie biting tutorial? I think it's just like that, but the zombie detects the player distance, and the correct rotation is not what you show in this tutorial I guess. I think it can work properly.

So how would you go about blueprinting so that you can do different takedowns each time the takedown input is pressed, that way it isn't the same exact takedown montage playing each time the input is pressed? And is it possible to give different takedowns to a second player to do on the same AI for co-op modes and stuff?

You make an array of the animations you want to use, then randomize it. To make it a bit better you can also put rules in place so you get the last animation, and skip it the next time it's used. A more advanced system would also take into account the rotation of the enemy relative to you. This is cool because it allows you to have different animations depending on where you are, let's say if you're on the left of the opponent you grab his left arm, but maybe if you're behind he grabs him directly on a choke hold, etc. This works for everything, being it AI or not. And ofc you can place different animations as long as it's a different BP. So you'd do a general character BP with all the functionality and then specific BPs for each type of character, on the NPC you'd just have to select the different animations. You can also do a takedown component instead, that works too. Depends on what you want to get.

Fantastic video! I got most of it working for my finish moves.. My problem is, that the player character doesn't play the animation till the end, unless I completely let go of the controller...The animation gets interrupted if I attack during the takedown

How would you set it up if the player takes down the enemy in other situations? E.g. from below, from above, stealth from the front, etc? Is there an easier way or a better way to set this up for various situations?

so to fix the jitter at the end, you need a better quality animation? Also, how could you set it up so if player des NOT sneak up on enemy, the enemy turns around but still giving the player attack just nota stealth attack?

I've tried this tutorial 3 times and for some reason my character stands still and eventually meshes with the ai and then the ai falls through the floor a few seconds later.

Animation montages never seem to work for me I can get by it by just playing an animation but my problem is they don't really sync up to each other at all, it all depends where I press the take down and even if I get it close to right pressing it guy still hovers above the ground a bit, does anyone know how to fix this?

Great tutorial really needed this but I didn’t work for me let me explain so on takedown ai on as third person character when I go out of it into can takedown? And compile it says the property associated with Can Takedown? Could not be found in ‘/game/AI_Enemy/Takedown_AI_c” and I’m really confused why plz help

Hey, have you made sure that the "target" on the "Set Can Takedown?" is connected into the cast to your character where you have the Boolean stored?

Amazing tutorial, this is the best tut and the best implementation of stealth takedown i have seen on KZbin. However, i am having an issue. First of all, i have to use the Disable Input node instead of disabling movement but the issue is that no matter what i do, the players animation plays facing the direction i was facing when entering the enemys overlap collider. So when i overlap the enemys overlap collider, and if i am not directly facing the enemy and i start the takedown, it wouldnt fix the rotation of my actor. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

@@MattAspland hey...i state the truth man....your tutorial is really good and helps understand the logic better. It doesn't go through interfaces and complicates things. As for my issue, i finally figured it out...i had to set the rotation of the controller instead of the actor itself and voila.....it works flawlessly!!! would love to share the end result with u as it looks AAA standard, however in a while as i dont want to post the video of the game yet. Once again thanks man, keep doing the amazing work in helping others learn...!!!

For some reason my AI disappears a couple seconds after his animation plays. There are no destroy actor nodes, so not sure what's happening to it

This tutorial is the only one that worked for me for a takedown. However when I takedown from a crouched position the animation plays correctly but not at the right height ( player's arms are above ai's head.) Any thoughts or fixes?

I would just simply uncrouch both players (just to be safe), before playing the anims

@@capnc4ke I actually figured it out, I added an up vector multiplied by a negative value to the forward and it works fine.

@@skouro31 not saying that doesn't work, but wouldn't simply uncrouching the player be easier? When you activate the event, you just tell both player to uncrouch, and then it'll play properly, then you don't have to do any math or anything too complicated

I enjoy your tutorials but i cant do much because i don't have a good pc.I have amd athlon 3050u silver with radeon 512mb graphics and 4gb of ram.Will i get better if i upgrade to 12gb or i have to upgrade my cpu and gpu as well?

After I press T the character and the AI just stand for a few seconds and then the AI disappears. There is no animation montages. I have double checked the blueprint and there is nothing wrong with it. This has been bothering me for a long time, can you help me out? Thanks!

@@strikermi9 I figured out the issue, go to your animBP for your character right click type slot -> Default slot then add that between the locomotion and output pose. dont ask me how it works cause I dont know but work it does

​@@SalahTube0 Right okay, yeah that's the animation blueprint I am referring to. If you open it up and go to the AnimGraph, you should have "State Machine>Slot_Default_Slot>Output". Do you have this?

Okay, something complicated perhaps... at least you can give terminology and I google myself if needed. Leap attack or even leap jump and of course... roofs can block it for obvious reasons. Create a Trajectory, Yay maths and put your character on "spline" movement... wait... did I just answer my own question? Sort of... Anyways got anything else... also need something like that for "controlled" dashing... Oh god, why do I want to make a complicated game... -.-' Splinepoints???
