Following your video, I successfully cleaned out the blower motor assembly on my daughter's 2010 GTI. There was a large wad of tangled-up cotton thread, apparently from carpet padding, sitting on the inside of the squirrel cage fan causing it to rotate off balance and vibrate (LOUD!) at the high fan setting. No more! Start to finish, 15 minutes and likely over $100 saved. Thank you!

my fan was dying, it would stay on for about 5 minutes, turn off, and click a few times. the only thing i wish this video could show better is how you practically have to be upside down with your head under the fan to replace it, and how it twists off and comes out, maybe also showing how exactly the clips pop off. The most important part has your hands in the way. You articulate it well, but a close up of how to undo that would have made this much more "beginner friendly". However, simply the news, hearing you say it was mostly toolless gave me the confidence to drop $230 to go pick one up at my local VW dealer, and replace it in front of them in the middle of winter.

Hello, stealthgti guy. Thanks for doing these videos. I’ve got a 2019 golf Alltrack which I’ve been enjoying the heck out of. However when I run the AC it smells like sweat socks. I seem to have developed mildew on my evaporator. I was wondering if you know how to get access to it to use a foaming cleaning product. Thanks.
@StealthGTI5 жыл бұрын
I don't know how to access the evaporator. But you may not need to. Check your pollen filter. Mine gets covered with leaves in the fall and pollen pods in the spring. As a result, I've developed the practice of changing my filter far too often, once after all the leaves have fallen and again when all the pollen pods have dropped. I've also heard that spraying Lysol into the cabin air intake (with filter removed) helps. Also, I never turn off the car with the vents on recirculate. I drive my last mile with fresh air blowing through the vents. Good luck, -Scott

I could hear a change in the pitch of the motor, sort of an up and down tone. Then there were times when I could tell that the fan was barely moving. There are also seemed to be a mechanical clicking sound that varied with fan speed (regarding of what fan speed was selected). That was enough to convince me that I had a blower problem instead of a resistor problem. Thanks for visiting.

Do you have to disconnect battery before blower motor removal?
@StealthGTI4 ай бұрын
I'm sure that a repair procedure would say to do so. But I'm pretty sure that I did not. First, the ignition was off; so, not power to the dash controls. Second, the ventilator was de-energized. So, it seemed safe enough. Of course, removing the battery's negative cable is always the safest approach. Thanks for visiting!

I honestly don't recall if I got it from the dealer. I *think* I did because it was the latest revision. At the time, any aftermarket vendor who was selling them had an older revision. The dealer pricing was competitive; so, I chose them. Even now, the motor at the dealer has been revised even further and may be an improvement over mine. Good Luck!

Thanks for making this video. I'm trying to troubleshoot my issue, and this is the closest I've found to a solution. My MK7 GTI's HVAC will operate normally for about 30 minutes, then the flow from the vents drops dramatically over the course of 10-15 minutes. The small of amount of air that is still coming out is cold so I think the AC is working fine. What's odd (or maybe I'm just not educated enough yet about the issue) is that even though the air flow is nearly stopped, I can still hear the whir of the fan. That makes me thinks it's not the blower motor, but I suppose it's possible the motor is still moving, just not fast enough to move air. Any thoughts or suggestions, before I order a nw blower motor or blower motor resistor? Thank you!
@StealthGTI2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for writing, Mr. Helmet! You're describing my old symptoms fairly well. But I'm still interested in hearing your experience with another experiment. Does your airflow problem happen only when the AC is running? If yes, then try turning off the AC and keeping the fan running. Put the fan on level 5. If airflow and cool air returns after about 10 minutes, even with the AC off, then you may have a different problem: Icing of the evaporator. A lot of people have a bad habit of running the AC with the ventilator set to 1 or 2. At low settings, there's not enough airflow to remove "cold" from the evaporator. Over time, around 20-30 minutes, the evaporator will actually ice-over and block everything with ice. By turning off the AC, the ice will melt, airflow will return, and the air will still be cool for a bit since the air is flowing over ice. Once the ice is gone, then the air will warm again. So, does your car exhibit this behavior? If yes, are you running your fan speed too low? If not, I think an undercharged system may ice-over, too. I don't know the physics behind that phenomenon, but it's another possibility. I had that problem not long ago. My mechanic evacuated the refrigerant, weighed it, and he recharged the system with the refrigerant that came out of the car (no need to add more). Oddly enough, I haven't have the problem return in over 18 months. What do you think? Let us know if you resolve this. Thanks for visiting!
@DarkHelmet19762 жыл бұрын
@@StealthGTI Ahhhhh, very interesting, and thank you for taking the time to share such a thoughtful answer. I'll have to run a full set of experiments this weekend, but I think you're on to something. The only times I've experienced this issue is when the AC has been on with the fan down low. And I recall on one occasion, I stopped the car for 30 minutes at the store and came out and it everything was working again (the ice melted?!?). Will run some tests and let you know in a few days what I've discovered. Thanks again!

@StealthGTI4 жыл бұрын
My blower started by making odd sounds and the fan speed fluctuated on its own. It was easier to diagnose than if the blower simply did not work. There are other things that could be suspect if your blower doesn't work at all, such as a fuse, voltage regulator, or something else. Good Luck!

Hey stealth gti, I have an issue with my a/c/heater, every time I turn it on it makes a squeaking noise , you think it’s the blower motor as well? Tempted to look tomorrow if it’s just something stuck in it or needs replacing, had the noise ever since I bought mine second hand
@StealthGTI3 жыл бұрын
It sure seems that way. I'd try two things: 1) Remove the blower motor; it's easy. Rotate the fan by hand to see if you hear any noise. Clean out any debris that you may find. If your fan is noisy when turning by hand, then it'll be noisy under power. 2) If the fan is quiet by hand, plug it in and power it by the car. Obviously, take care to position the fan so that it is free of anything that can be damaged or injured by the fan. Keep fingers, toes, and tongues away. ;-) Hopefully, you should be able to conclude your problem after this test. Good Luck!

@StealthGTI2 жыл бұрын
If I understand correctly, your dash vents work fine and blow normally? What about when you turn the selector to the defrost/windshield vents? Does the air flow change? If the air blows strong from the dash vents and nowhere else, then I'd wonder about the airflow mixer, which I think is electronically controlled and perhaps far more laborious to replace.
