Steam Boiler Gauge Sight Glass Replacement - Boiling Point

Always crack open the steam (top) gauge glass stop (with drain open) first if the boiler is hot. This warms the glass gently. Then open the bottom one, allowing a little water to flush out any small shards of glass, rust, debris from previous broken sightglass, etc.

Can I replace the sight glass when the boiler still operating? If so, the boiler water still hot, which valve open first to put water back in the sight glass?

Just introduce the heat slowly will really be the best bet to not cause shock. Wearing gloves is the best and safest way to do this procedure. Hopefully that help and thanks for watching.

I would love some one to particularly hint on replacing the gauge glass when the boiler is actually running, since their is always limited time to stop production . which valve should be opened first? often the glass explodes when opening those valves.

Nyaika Nelson Always wait till the boiler cools down. Make sure the site glass is high pressure rated. I use Duran glass like the one used in this video.

For the home, what does it mean when the gauge glass is full to the point where you can't see the water line and it doesn't drain even when draining the main valve until the low cutoff light comes on?

It sounds like something is going wrong for sure. The boiler might be incredibly flooded or there could be something wrong with the gauge glass. Recommend getting that checked out from a professional in your area. Good luck and thanks for watching!

After replacing the glass & reinstalling the rods, you should not open both valves at the same time. If the bottom nut/washer leaks you will see water dripping. You have no way of knowing if the top nut is going to leak except when the boiler is making steam. Open the bottom valve 1st. If the water level rises in the glass the top washer is not seated properly. If the water does not rise the the washer/nut is good. Science - 2 things cannot occupy the same space at the same time.
