Since steam engines are known to have existed, it seems like they could've restricted themselves to just building and testing the actual gun part (and just use an electric or gas power source to spin it).

7:00 so they went with an oil barrel as "protection" against a machine that supposedly flings metal projectiles at velocities in the hundreds of feet per seconds?
@pawemichalski50434 жыл бұрын
This was intended to make sure that it will shoot only in one direction (the place where the hole is) by keeping the ball inside the gun barrel . It's not meant to be a protection of any sort.

Centrifugal force does not exist. It is just inertia. An object always wants to go in a straight line, this is why ye olde slingshots were very accurate. The object wants to go at a tangent from the orbit and that is what's pushing the ball outward.
@anon87404 жыл бұрын
Technically centrifugal force does exist but only when working from a rotating reference frame.
@BoostedMonkey054 жыл бұрын
@@anon8740 no it doesn't. Centripetal force does and the rope that connects the sling pouch to your hand creates that force. Centrifugal doesn't. The object in a sling pouch still wants to go at a tangent to the orbit but the pouch and the string is preventing that. Same with if you were going around swinging a bucket of water around.
@BoostedMonkey054 жыл бұрын
@@anon8740 if you were to slow down that same bucket, what would happen is that the water wants to go at a straight line but the bucket is there to catch it and they are moving at the same speed. If you stop moving the bucket, the water will spill out because it still wants to go in a straight line.
@anon87404 жыл бұрын
@@BoostedMonkey05 When using the ground as a stationary reference point, everything you said is true, but you've gotta remember that there is no reason to use the ground as the standard for what is stationary, the earth is rotating while orbiting the sun which is orbiting the center or the milky way, the the ground isn't really stationary at all. So, why not see what happens if we pick an alternative stationary reference, for example, the rope. If we lock onto the rope for a reference frame then it'll look like the world is rotating around it, the bucket will be stationary relative to the rope and the water will still not fall from the bucket, because of centrifugal force. Really, this is just the equal and opposite reaction to centripetal force, but depending on your reference frame, it may appear. Which is why it's called a fictitious or apparent force.
@anon87404 жыл бұрын
