@A M Yeah, I remember it as far back as 1976 in the Yankees Chris Chambliss walk-off pennant winner against KC. It was the most dramatic game I evert got to attend. I'm not much of a Mets Fan but I had a lot of respect for them in 86 when they came back and beat my arch-rival, the Boston Red Sox. Game 6 is known as the Buckner choke, which overshadowed a 2 out rally by the Mets who got a string of 3 straight hits to put the tying and winning run on base. I bet on them that game as well as game 7 in which the Mets dominated.
@RayRay-zt7bj4 жыл бұрын
@A M Yeah, I remember screaming "Oh What A Night!" when they opened up the lead. Oh, and yeah, I am sure you've seen the Chambliss homerun KZbin. Looking at it from the video gives me a bigger perspective of what happened that night. I was sitting in either first or 3rd row of the Right Center Field bleachers, about maybe 20 feet from where the ball landed in the bullpen area between the 2 giant walls. One of the guys next to us leaped over the wall. I don't know if he got the ball or not. My 3 friends and I were deprived of running onto the field because security already had the main section blocked off to get there. Chambliss had to fight for his life to reach home plate. That field was totaled that night, as Phil Rizzuto announced "This Field will never be the same again!". The disappointing part of that postseason is my brother got us two great WS game 4 tickets, front row mezzanine seats, on the first base side. The rest is history.

@A M Lots of material on Ken Burns baseball series. There is no video collection that describes the history of the game and its influence on culture like Ken Burns Baseball. Oh, and speaking of the 77 World Series. That was the very first of only 2 World Series games I went to. The Yankees lost. I vaguely remember being there. I realized that weed and baseball don't mix well. I never really cared to smoke it anyway. I heard rumors about the fire that night but couldn't see anything from the bleachers. The fire was well behind us. Oh, and BTW, that whole 76 game is on KZbin if it hadn't been taken down yet. I didn't realize how bad things got in that last inning with the fans throwing debris on the field. I sort of recall debris come flying over our heads and onto the field. Most of it came from the right-field stands. Luckily for the Yanks, that game wasn't canceled or protested. There were lots of idiot fans back in the day.

Some trivia regarding the “na na hey hey” lyrics in this song: as the song was being written, there were sections of the song where they could not figure out what lyrics they wanted, so for those sections they just put in “placeholder” lyrics to fill those areas for the time being till they could come up with what they wanted to use there. The placeholder lyrics were the “na na hey hey” words that have now become so famous. As they got closer to the time that they needed to record, they still didn’t have the lyrics that they wanted to put in there, so they left “na na hey hey” in there and the rest, as they say, was history. Those backstory details were discussed on one of the music chart shows (can’t recall if it was one of the radio or TV shows) from back then and so that’s where I got the info from. EDIT: I’ve been trying to recall what show I heard the backstory from, but I have not been able to nail a specific show down. The shows I followed most often were Casey Kasem’s show on radio and Dick Clark’s “American Bandstand” on TV. So, I would presume it must have been one of those shows. Both of those hosts liked to pass along song trivia, so it would be a good likelihood that it was one of them who provided the details about the “na na hey hey”lyrics.

Sometimes, you just can't predict what's going to resonate with an audience. (If you could, then *every* song would be a hit, right?) Sometimes even the band themselves doesn't know -- the Doobie Brothers never really expected "Black Water" to be a hit (it, too was originally a 'B' side), and Jeff Lynne of ELO basically threw "Don't Bring Me Down" together as an afterthought because side 2 of the "Discovery" album was coming up a few minutes short. Both bands were caught completely by surprise when those songs became Top-10 hits!

@@laminage Yep -- sometimes all it took back then was for the radio DJ to play the "wrong" side of the record, either on accident, or because he was the late-night guy and figured no one was listening at 3AM anyway, so why the heck not... and next thing you know, the station's call-in lines are lighting up with requests for it, word spreads to other stations, and then eventually the record companies find out and reissue it as an "A" side and pretend they knew it was going to be a hit all along. :-D

The song was written and recorded by studio musicians Gary DeCarlo, Dale Frashuer, and producer/writer Paul Leka at Mercury Records studios in New York City. I never looked up who sang this song. I always thought he was black. Guess that's why you shouldn't assume.

FYI these guys are NOT the original guys who sang the song, and the guy lip synching the lead is NOT Gary DeCarlo, whose voice you hear !! This is the interloper STEAM road band !!!

I was just reading an interview of Gary where he said because there was no band named Steam, and the writers had no desire to tour, a band was hired to tour the country lip sinking their songs. The lead singer in the video you're watching looks nothing like Gary but sounds just like him, so this band may be the lip-sinking band. I can find no photo that lists the names of the young men in the photos of "Steam". Gary never got paid for his song as he should. It sold like 6.5 million world wide yet he was paid around $15K for the song from the beginning, I think I read. He and his partner wrote it in an all night marathon. By 4am it was complete. Around 2011-12, Gary was contacted by the Doo Wapp producers of the PBS series and asked if he'd be interested in performing his song for their series. He said "Hell yes!!" He finally got the recognition he deserved. The link below, which you've probably already seen, looks like a Doo Wapp production. I was 15 or 16 when the song hit #1 and remember it well. What a great fun song. Everyone I knew loved it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/sJOspYV6aZV-gJI
