Wyoming must’ve had a lot more human infrastructure in it back in 1940s when steam locomotives ruled, than it does today

That's what happens when you need less people to maintain the trains. When the need for those people to live there disappeared, the people left.

@@andrewboyd8073 Exactly. Same thing happened to railtowns like Altoona, PA and Cumberland, MD when diesels took over. I’ve been to both in person and am doing college in Altoona.

16:54 That’s got to be one of the best early recordings and clips of a Big Boy’s whistle going off. Not just by the sound, but the background. It really gives you the feeling that these monsters were the native machines of the state, a feeling the gives a chilling voice to those lands so empty, one that’ll often give you company for a few minutes filled with awe.

Would have been something to see all this steam in action in person, love it!! Sad that all of these magnificent machines were scrapped, but the 844 and 4014 live on. Still not the same as seeing so much steam on mainline operations

We also got Challengers 3985 and 3977, some of 844s sisters such as 833, the only 4-12-2 Union Pacific preserved, 9000, and the only 2-10-2 the Union Pacific ever preserved, 5511.

Union Pacific had an impressive variety of steam power during the steam era and these locomotives are shown in this film operating in both freight and passenger service . I am very satisfied that the Union Pacific rr has preserved a fair amount of their historic steam locomotives for display viewing as a tribute to the steam era from many decades ago.

This video was the inspiration for my Sherman Hill layout in the 1950s. Fantastic detail in all of the shots. I lost this video in a move and am grateful that I can see it again.

Hard to express how much, I miss steam!! Im sure we all know why Diesel replaced steam but... Its kinda like trading a sleek '61 Corvette convertible for a plain Jane Chevy station wagon. There was a great need for the utility but a wagon has no beauty and lacks soul. Thanks guys for all of the time you took out of your lives to record this great footage. And thanks for all of the "cabeese". (I just cant bring myself to say cabooses.) Rewatching: .24:21 Im reasonably sure thats Big Boy 4014 in its youth.

So surely someone has counted how many times this film showed 3985, 4014, and 844? Awesome footage. Such a shame steam reached it pinnacle right before it's shortened life. Perhaps with another decade of steam being the only motive power, new materials and technology would of helped to keep it around but we know now why all that changed.

It pretty much just comes down to the fact that the biggest and smallest locos were always the ones to stay active the longest. The mid size classes were largely retired before the whole "end of steam" and donation craze started.

I went ahead and got this on DVD. Decent footage but MAN this guy's narration is *DRY* and boring to listen to. It doesn't even sound like he's really "talking" but more like he's reading cue cards in like one take.
