Steam Powered Feed Grinder Processing Corn McCormick-Deering 10" Type D And Some Hardware History

Long time steam friend JJ sent a query a cousin of his made about grinding some corn to feed to his cattle. I thought it would make a great video subject.
I've had a McCormick-Deering 10" Type D Feed Grinder for about 15 years that has seen little use.
The task of processing 1700 pounds (770kg the video is wrong) of yellow corn to coarse meal would be a good test of both the grinder and my 5x6 English Iron Works steam engine. The engine has never really been worked hard since owning it.
The catalog information I once read said the engine is rated at 8hp (5.9kW). Since the catalog information is lost, it's an educated guess as to what speed and pressure is required to make 8hp.
The initial engine speed was to be 300-350RPM to get the grinder speed near its 8hp load speed of 520RPM. For a 1-2/3:1 ratio a 20" pulley is required to drive the 12" grinder pulley. Final speed settings were determined during the grinding.
Thanks to good fortune at a 2020 auction a suitable drive pulley was acquired. The back story on the pulley company is intriguing.
It's not often that the old iron earns a few sheckles but it's nice when it does. Total processing time was about 4-1/2 hours with my customer handling the corn and me managing the steam plant.
Dodge, through a series of different owners, is still in business. Their flat belt products are limited to conveyer purposes.

I never had the steam power, but we had a grinder like that, a bit smaller. And we also had a corn sheller to go with it.. made good chicken feed. Was slow for cattle feed.

I believe it's a later Gardner. It has a "Ball Ranger" that was common on Pickering governors and may have been patented by them.

Molasses will work for belt dressing too. Someone may know of any real drawbacks to this.
