Glittery Homestuck hmm, interesting theory, why do you say that?
@ezrablock32189 жыл бұрын
Amanda McCollum Well have you ever heard the saying "You've got big shoes to fill."? The way I see it, the song is about giving up something great because you think you can do better, and then getting replaced by someone who does better. The "mouse" is The Jon, who came upon the shoes and then left (got hit by a bus in the song). "I was once like you" he used to play a human in the band. "You can't teach a pair of shorts how to pants" The Jon left because he thought he could do better on his own, but all he did was fade into obscurity because he wasn't made to fit the role of a big star (one could argue none of them are, they all fit special roles and only work consistently in a team). "It's all about the friends/toes you lose." Leaving the band only cost him, it didn't turn out well for him at all. '"You'll see you times infinity" You can be easily replaced, like most people in the music industry. The only good thing that came of it was Hatchworth. At the end of the video the shoes disappear, I assume this is because Hatchworth became such a good replacement that he himself can no longer be replaced, so the shoes no longer exist. No one can fill his role. Keep in mind that this isn't a super serious songs, and most songs with meaning have a few lyrics that don't serve any purpose except to fill space.
@ezrablock32189 жыл бұрын
Ezra Block I have come across the information that Jon left to become a painter. I still think this song is about Hatchy filling his role. But I think it's less spiteful than I previously interpreted and may refer more to Sam's transition into the role and giving up his job to devote more time to the band, than Jon leaving.

I've just recently discovered Steam Powered Giraffe and I must say, you are the most refreshing, MY soul-touching, original music, I've heard from my lifetime. The tears started at about the verse with standing in the middle of the street with a bus... I was hit by a car in 1989; I had already survived multiple levels of traumas & tragedies; she was going 60mph; I was wearing brand new shoes. I was 12. I'm 43 now and within the last few months (likely longer, if I'm kinder to myself) I've been working actively, very hard, to help heal emotionally. It can be very difficult to put it all back together but something tells me, that with messages that I hear from you guys, I'll have another toolset to help me recover from *all* of life. I think perfectionism is just fear in fancy shoes and a mink coat, pretending to be elegant when it's just terrified. Because underneath all that shiny veneer, perfectionism is nothing more than a deep existential angst that says, again and again, "I am not good enough and I will never be good enough." --Elizabeth Gilbert

I'm so pissed. I could've been listening to SPG years ago if I'd only known they existed. But no, the pop industry tried to shove Taylor Swift and Kanye West clones down my throat for six years and I'm only now discovering all of these great songs thanks to an honorable mention inclusion on a "weird bands" list. Seriously, everyone -- and I mean EVERYONE -- I have shared SPG links with has had the same two responses. Pre-response: "Steam Powered Giraffe? Never heard of them." Post-response: "Dammit, why haven't I heard of these guys before?!" Only problem I have with the shift in genre is that it gets irritating constantly having to answer the question "Who is this?" whenever I play that playlist ("SPG. Still SPG. Still SPG. It's a song about being a robot -- who do you think it is? Yup, this one is also SPG. Buddy, I'll let you know when the next song isn't SPG.") :p

As much as I love the upbeat, twangy weirdness of this song, I can't help but feel sad while listening to it. The lyrics seem to suggest a struggle with trying to fit in or being pushed out. "Although they're pretty slick, no one will let you through" "When everyone's in red, you wear blue" "It doesn't matter those fancy shoes, so why would, why would you?" It's all talking about being different from the people around you, which is totally cool. You've gotta be true to yourself, even if it makes you stick out. But the last line of the chorus literally says "if the shoes don't matter to them, why would you matter either?" IDK, am I reading too much into it?? Does anyone else get that feeling too?
@Fayklore Жыл бұрын
Also 'But when all's said and done, are the shoes built for fun? Or to protect from broken glass or toe biters in tall grass?' Implies whether they are for entertainment or to protect, going into this analogy well too.

Sam is so good in this song and sounds good singing lead. Plus David and Bunny sound wonderful together your voices build each other up and complement each other so very well. I love this song! Keep at it!

One of the many things I love about SPG is how they utilize every bit of their vocal ranges. I miss the days when I could still hit those high notes!

It's crazy how this song sounds like Muse to me.

I'm like, a huge Muse fan and I am *constantly* confused when people compare Sam's music to theirs.
@Selestrielle10 жыл бұрын
So, do you mean you don't see how it sounds similar in some way?
@Aeroductile110 жыл бұрын
Tyler Bryson sam's even said in the past that they inspire him so yeah how do you not even kinda see it??
@Beespank10 жыл бұрын
I totally hear it too, it's a fantastic song tho
@tylerbryson64210 жыл бұрын
larvitarse I'm totally open to the idea, I just haven't heard someone explain the similarities in a convincing way. Like is it the instrumentation? The vocals? Because there are only vague similarities at best in both of those cases, IMO. Muse didn't invent the type of singing Sam does. And just cuz he's inspired by them doesn't mean he sounds like them. Not trying to be argumentative or anything, the comparison's just always confused me a lil bit. ^_^

I Love my parents because they're the only people I Know who can see me watching anything like this and be like "Oh...That's cool." And My Dad starts watching it with me because he's "secretly" interested in Steampunk. My Sister Is as addicted to Steam powered giraffe as I am My Brother's autistic though so he tries to eat the computer My Mom just looks at me weird and then gets back to whatever she was doing because she's afraid to even ask.

I'll admit when I first started listening to the band, The Jon was in his final days as a member. After he was replaced by Hatchworth, it didn't settle well with me, because he didn't resonate as well. But on songs like this, he's a really good addition, better than Jon would have been. If he has the choice to hit lower notes he usually sounds a lot better
