I do use the varivalve vents but they really work best for large radiators. Not much air in that radiator. They are adjustable but even closed let out a lot of air. I guess they are the few that mount vertically.

Here 🤔 a year ago up in Jackson I ran into a home with radiators that had to be from the 1800’s . Man an these things were old heavy brutes of cast iron an I guarantee you they were covered in lead paint 😮 but anyway what I found amazing was I only found “1” leaking steam at the joints.. anyway they were wanting estimates for conversion to hot water. I give them a quote but told them the heat is not going to feel the same. Long story short new steam boiler an replaced the one radiator . “After hazmat was in and removed all the Asbestos” . In the basement you could visually see the white dust in the air as you walked through the basement. An In one corner was still The cast door for the old black coal ben with coal fines in the stone yet after years!! lol was a cool old house with all hand hued beams ❤❤ love that old place

Still using a steam heat system in my home, only issue is a very slow leak with the auto feeder that requires me to use the ball valve instead to manually fill while i track down a replacement diaphragm. While the automatic water feeder could be replaced entirely, it just seems so wasteful and expensive to spend $250 replacing the entire device when the only issue is the diaphragm that (in my case) you get to by removing 3 screws as well as unhooking the plastic retention clips for the PCB on the Uni-Match Universal Waterfeeder, and then gently pulling the metal cover off, then taking the diaphragm out. Sometime you get lucky and the leak is just due to a little bit of gunk or hard water buildup that can be cleaned and other times it is a tiny break in the diaphragm that leads to a slow leak that eventually overfills the water heater. It horrible to see the entire thing be replaced when the failure is a small rubber piece.

pretty sure the only service part available for them is the strainer screen kit. unless you know a factory employee that can make some fall off the bench into their lunch box. 🤣

I have 100 year old radiators in my houses that have been painted and then custom covers put on and now I’m getting rid of all of the radiators for radiate heat under my new Hardwood floors. These old radiators have flowers and other things carved into the cast iron or at least that’s what I thought they were made of until I started stripping the paint off . These huge radiators that are liked 4’ high by 5’ long are made of brass.

unlikely, they're most certainly cast iron but that the first original coat of pain was a bronze paint where actual bronze dust was made into a paint specifically made for radiators of the day, which gave the radiators that brass look. similar radiator paint was made with aluminum dust to make the radiators silver.

Mikey, Just curious. I have a National Boiler from 1962. Works perfect, no leaks, new pressuretrol, float type low water cut off, and I keep it well maintained. What is the average cost of a new Burnham 140,000 BTU Steam Boiler installed ? Just a rough ball park figure. I live in Chicago and you won't believe how many Heating and Cooling places don't know about Steam.
