As a licensed master electrician, I'm shaking my head knowing these same hacks rewired at least part of her house - the part that catches fire the most, the kitchen!! My prayers for the homeowners. Bottom line to people looking to hire someone - if there are inspectors out there for the type of work you want done - insist on getting inspections either from your municipality if they have them, and if not, they will tell you who the inspection agencies are in your area. One doesn't always need to be licensed to do work in your area. But that does not mean their work isn't required to be inspected. I'm just an electrician, but I'm not so sure this heating system would pass any inspection.

Contractors who do this to homeowners should not only have to pay back all the money that they basically stole, but any cost of repairs and loss. If they don't know what they are doing, admit it it, get someone who does.

I have one tip to prevent injuries and/or nasty shocks. Always assume the 24V wiring is somehow connected to mains voltage until proven otherwise (measuring against ground). I have seen (and touched!) botched up 24V boiler / AC wiring, either a hack job or damaged wiring touching mains voltage. Stay safe!

Had a job like this 20 years ago, was an old house converted into a dormitory for college students. General contractor and I went over the plumbing and heating system to bring it up to code. After a walk through the only parts of the plumbing and heating that were usable , 1. main water shut off at the meter, 2. the stack clean out at the floor, 3. new heating boiler installed by college maintenance, everything was junk!. The soil stack was cast iron, PVC, ABS, 4" flue pipe and rubber hose to the sinks, holding up the mess was strap iron , rope and winter tire chains. The piping off the boiler was even worse no expansion tank, hanging pipes. My quote was really excessive did not want to be involved in what was to become a s**t show. Sometimes its best not to be involved, when the customer low balls a job then wants a pro to bring back the dead you don't win and working with the contractor that did this job will not be good! 😎

Yuck, forced air. How do you live with that dried out, scorched air. A good boiler install doesn't look anything like this. And the heat is so comfortable, especially with cast iron radiators and the soft heat they give out. I wouldn't live in a house with a furnace, not in a million years. Especially not gas where the heat exchanger can corrode through and let carbon monoxide into your house with no smoke or other warning signs. Hot water is also a million times more complex than a steam system, which has practically no moving parts and will easily last 100 years plus. The best of both worlds. Simplicity and reliability beyond forced air with the comfort of hot water. I won't buy a house with anything other than steam heat, preferably oil fired. Just like any other system if it was installed or serviced by idiots it's not going to work right, or look good.

1/2" PEX B with crimp fittings on a hydronic system is nuts. I had a property a few years ago that was 3/4 all done in crimp PEX And with all the fittings I total it up to have an equivalent run of 670 ft In the 3rd floor zone. The funny thing was they used PEX A pipeso I could reuse a lot of it. I removed over 100 90° crimp fittings from that system and got rid of the burned up high head taco and replaced it with a regular 007.

3/4 pex will carry around 4 gpm, copper because it has a larger inner diameter can carry 6gpm in a radiant system. If your system is designed around a 20 degree delta T as most systems are(mind you indirect water heaters and fan coils may run much higher delta T's but baseboard or rads 20, 25, 30 max) you are looking at 40k BTU for pex,60k BTU for copper.

That's a redo, it does not appear to be oxygen barrier pex in the basement(it's Lowes/HD pipe orange is the oxygen barrier color plus I see the 5006 markings which is plain pex-b), it's sloppy it makes zero sense. Do home runs to the baseboards to manifolds that can be used to bleed the system on each zone and run radiant loops under the kitchen floor using reflectors and insulation and temper the water with a mixing valve. What a jacked up install, someone needs to clean that up, maybe they can salvage some fittings but there is not much else salvageable. A plumber would have to be nuts to work on that unless it is all being replaced or the scope of work is minor and well defined like changing a valve or a leaky fitting.

I have a system like that. They charged her to take all of the old copper plumbing out and left the old furnace? They left a valve on top of the the furnace? Where is the pressure regulator and relief valve that should be right above the system? That is not actually a boiler it is a swimming pool heater. Still works for heating. Putting in the floors they have changed the pressure. Air locks in the line cause problems with registers not heating. She needs to get that person into a court.
@PipeDoctor
@PipeDoctor 29 күн бұрын
What are you talking about?
@dw3403
@dw3403 29 күн бұрын
@PipeDoctor Above the furnace should be that tank that regulates the pressure. O that very pipe that goes to that tank there should be a main air valve that allows a lot of air to go through it but shuts when the water hits it. That's what gets rid of the air after the system gets drained because of working on it. It is a different kind of valve than radiators have to get ride of bubbles that won't flush out causing problems certain radiators.

@ The ‘work’ on that boiler piping and radiant is so fundamentally botched up the only way to fix it is to rip most of it out. On a boiler that old, I would not waste my time or the customers money with that. I am assuming also before these recent ‘repairs/improvements’ it probably did not work that well, but at least they could purge air out out of the old standing cast iron rads at the key vents. If you pay attention to the video, all the basic parts are there; ie, feeder, pressure relief and expansion tank on near boiler piping. Weil McLain has a nice little handbook on boiler piping, Burnham has a great one too. Dan Holohan’s book is a great reference. Now, I’m overcomplicating it, but if you read some of the top comments the list of just plain botched work gets explained.🤔

Should cost that much. Just need to rip all o f the pex in the basement & redo most of the basement runs for now. Then fix the radiators upstairs as phase two. I am guessing the are are fixed income. so probably cannot afford a large bill at once. That said this is an example of going cheap cost big $$$, since it needs to be removed & redone from scratch.

@@guytech7310 Instead of this "temp. mess", they would have been better off buying some heavy coats, and socks, until it could be fixed correctly.

Unbelievable what was the homeowner’s reasoning for replacing the old radiator’s and old pipes?

I can tell you what likely happened some genius repiped the rads with that PEX which is not oxygen barrier, rads are cast iron, they corroded from oxygenated water and were leaking and clogged with rust. Homeowner brings in a handyman who did the baseboard conversion with the sharkbites at least he seemed to use oxygen barrier pipe and had the existing piping not been such a cluster it would have worked alright but the guy clearly doesn't understand heating systems just running pipes. This is clearly a case of some hack made modifications to the old system and this homeowner bought the home and the heat didn't work and she didn't have the money to bring in a plumber so she had a handyman try to fix it and now is finally bringing in professional as reality is setting in that she's not going to have heat this winter.
