It's such quality content that no matter what particular moments I find myself paying attention to in any given episode is interesting. This makes it easy to relax to since there isn't any urge to skip around looking for the "good episodes" that I find myself doing on lesser channels.

I don't disagree about the quality of the finished game on the Dreamcast but I actually like the concept of Spirit of Speed 1937 and would love to see another 1930s-focused racing game with licensed circuits, especially ones that ceased to exist decades ago. I think a modern attempt would add a lot more detail to the vintage circuits compared to what we saw on Dreamcast, where it seems most of the detail was put in the areas immediately around the start/finish line with generic scenery elsewhere. Possibly my favourite Dreamcast racing game is from Acclaim (but not really from Acclaim): F355 Challenge, which, obviously, was actually developed by AM2 at Sega for the Naomi arcade system but Sega chose to split the costs of the expensive Ferrari license (plus licensing all of those real world circuits) with Acclaim in exchange with Acclaim getting the rights to distribute the home version of Sega's own game on the Dreamcast.
@CasperEgas Жыл бұрын
Yes, totally agree.
@HugoBonami Жыл бұрын
If Spirit of Speed had been made with some competence, it could have succeeded. It was even more niche than (the great and considerably successful) Grand Prix Legends but it would have had a market. It wasn't good on the PC either despite sharper visuals as it was completely devoid of atmosphere and fun. It drives like a worse Monaco Grand Prix.
@humperdinckfangboner9749 Жыл бұрын
Yeah I can tell that sega lord x is not a big motorsports fan with his comments on that game. There's a sizable portion of sim racing fans that would love a proper game that handles pre-war racing cars, and a bunch of mods for sims that have added the cars to the game. GPlaps loves covering stuff like that. Some people actually prefer driving cars like that since the cars are so squirrely and drift happy. SOS just does a terrible job with handling and conveying any speed. By the 30s cars like the Auto Unions were over 200 MPH, even if they were nowhere near that there's no reason for them to feel so slow, conveying speed is in the hands of the devs, whatever is displayed on the speedometer is arbitrary.

Man, I feel like they never really pushed the dreamcast to its limit. It just didnt live long enough. I mean look at the difference in N64 games from launch to death, or PS2 games. Its jarring, they dont look like they belong on the same system. But Dreamcast games look like Dreamcast games.
@kurisuchiinathecrocodile333 Жыл бұрын
@@AltimaNEO Tbh i dont think it has that much space to be pushed. Some consoles allow crazy push over years, but some already demonstrate strength in first years. Why do I say this? Because I spent huge time exploring libraries of dreamcast-based arcades (some of them had hardware improvements so it would not possible to port them to DC without downgrade, some used almost vanilla dreamcast base) - and imho the difference between them and DC's best looking titles was not as big, meanwhile they were getting games until around 2006-2008. Though, of course, who knows? Talented devs can do absolutely amazing things you might not expect from the system.
@trevorbayers2175 Жыл бұрын
Like all of Sega’s consoles, Dreamcast sucked. I also though Genesis sucked mainly because of its main controller. If you remember, the Genesis + sign shaped directional pad was rounded, unlike Sony’s and Nintendo’s and it made moving the character in the exact direction you wanted tougher. Many times playing games on Genesis, like the OG Sonic, you would be pressing right and Sonic would crouch instead. Super bad design. That was one of the main reasons I got rid of my Genesis shortly after purchasing it. The other, its games weren’t nearly as good and creative as Sony’s or Nintendo’s. Sega always tried to compete in the home console wars and NEVER even came close to winning, which makes sense since Sega gave up years ago. Just a poorly run company, with poorly developed consoles, controllers and games. Sega was just as bad as Atari and its consoles.

Once upon a time in the late '90s, a young boy named Tommy was eagerly anticipating the arrival of his brand-new Sega Dreamcast. He had heard about the amazing games he could play on it, particularly the one he desired most - Soul Calibur. Every day, he would pester his parents, asking them to buy the game for him. Finally, the day came when Tommy's parents surprised him with the Dreamcast. Excitement bubbled within him as he eagerly tore open the wrapping paper. But as he unveiled the sleek, white console, his eyes widened in disbelief. Instead of the highly anticipated Soul Calibur, there was a game called Soul Fighter bundled with the Dreamcast. Tommy's heart sank. His dreams of dueling with sword-wielding warriors in Soul Calibur had been shattered. He couldn't understand how his parents had made such a monumental mistake. The disappointment swelled inside him until it was unbearable. In his frustration, Tommy stormed off to the kitchen, where he found his sister's secret stash of Bounty bars. With tears in his eyes, he grabbed a handful of the coconut-covered chocolate bars and began to devour them voraciously. The sweetness of the chocolate mixed with the bitterness of his disappointment, creating a storm of emotions within him. When his sister discovered her pilfered chocolate stash, a chaotic family argument erupted. Tommy's meltdown over the wrong game choice, coupled with his sister's anger at the stolen chocolates, set off a chain reaction of yelling and accusations. Their parents tried in vain to mediate the situation, but the damage was done. The once-happy family was torn apart by this seemingly innocent mix-up. Tommy's rage and his sister's distress over the missing chocolates led to weeks of tension in the household. It was a situation that none of them had expected when they opened that Dreamcast box. As time passed, the family slowly began to heal, but the memory of that fateful day lived on as a cautionary tale. Tommy eventually learned to appreciate the effort his parents had put into the gift, and his sister, after much sulking, forgave him for eating her chocolate. It was a lesson in the importance of understanding and communication, for sometimes, the smallest misunderstandings could lead to the greatest chaos.

I remember at the time people would say, "because it's in 3D" or "look, you can use weapons now", and I always thought, so what, I've seen most of this before and the weapons weren't even implemented that well. It never impressed me. War Gods was just more of the same and an embarrassing copycat at that. Then I soon played Soul Calibur on a friend's Dreamcast, and it wiped the floor with this game. There's not even a fair comparison. This game is a joke in compared to the incredible game Soul Calibur was, which somehow managed to be even better than its arcade version all while maintaining a silky smooth 60fps. Most reviewers at the time gave Soul Calibur a perfect score, and it was well-deserved.

That was a solid list. I never played any of these games, so good to know they are worth avoiding. Yeah, Acclaim definitely was the very definition of "steaming pile" for many of their releases. I would love to see a Genesis/Mega Drive and/or Saturn list of steaming piles as well!

If you want Mortal Kombat Gold, look for the one with the "Hot New" on the front cover. And the disc label must be red.

We need to see some more positive reviews. Like Dino Crisis on the Dreamcast. Or how about all the new releases for the system? SCUMMVM has been adapted to the Dreamcast.

Another problem with Spirit of Speed was the insane decision not to include a 2-player option!

Seventh Cross also required an entire memory card of space for one save, AND happens to be incompatible with all third party memory cards. That's a total disrespect for player time and money.
@Penguindude1 Жыл бұрын
That Seventh Cross Evolution game looks like someone saw EVO: Search for Eden, and wanted to make a 3D interpretation of it. Also if you want a crappy Dreamcast game that wasn't handled by Acclaim, there's Who Wants to Beat Up a Millionaire, developed and published by the same teams that would later create the Outlaw Golf games.

SLX, you had a great idea for a future series when you talked about Acclaim. How about best/worst devs for all Sega consoles? Even episodes solely focused on a particular dev and their releases on each console? 👍🏻

I feel the exact same way about Urban Chaos. I gave the game so many chances I really really wanted to like it. Like soul fighter there is a basis of a good game
@MrFoofles Жыл бұрын
Oh, I had a few of these! I've actually given Soul Fighter and Fighting Force 2 an honest shot but never got really far for exactly the reasons you described. In Soul Fighter, I always assumed there was some game mechanic preventing me from picking up items. But now I finally see it's just broken!

Alternate title: Dreamcast titles to pick up to make your collection feel less lonely.

Alternate title even needs to exist, with the Dreamcast having died early, most of its good games have been covered to death.

I don't aggree with Spirit of Speed: a game using thrities cars has great potential because these cars were utterly insane. The speed record they reached was 380km/ph, on a tin with zero safety whatsoever. You'd need to fully lean into it, make the player feel the speed, possibly implement a roster of racers that die as you inevitably crash and some good old propaganda because it's the thirties for some black humour. That makes the game even worse. There was great potential for something really fun.

I love MK4, I can't understand why some people don't like it. The Dreamcast version is ok. These days I play n64 mostly because of no loading times and my Dreamcast is dead :( my laser died a few years ago and I can't find a replament or another Dreamcast where I live (and I'm afraid to order from another country). I miss my Dreamcast.

I never owned a Dreamcast growing up and that was a dream goal of mine. They were at Pawn Shops but somehow they began to fade into obscurity in time. Though I have played a Dreamcast in other places. In 2017 I bought one when I was living with my grandmother and passed a month and half after New Years in 2018 and wasn’t able to play it til I got my own place by the end of that year. I didn’t care for the games being old like NBA 2K, 2K1 and 2K2! I purchased them cause they were the first three! I never played Soul Calibur but I heard so many stories about it so I bought it and man this game was amazingly fun. It’s missions and more! I played Sonic Adventure especially on Xbox 36 a few years back but never had the chance to beat the game. I wondered if I should get it on Dreamcast or purchase it on the PS4? I feel Dreamcast is more home and original but that damn game and Sonic Adventure 2 Battle are going $50 to $100 and something on EBay. Soon I’ll get it! The Dreamcast deserved so much better , that’s why I cherish the console and never get rid of it. It’s my favorite gaming console!

Dreamcast has Power Stone, Power Stone 2, MVC, MVC 2, Spawn in the Demons Hand, Illbleed, D2, Blue Stinger, Sword of Berserk, Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, and many more great titles. With that said almost every game I listed is expensive now a days for a complete copy. Some people might have to burn copies just to play the game which is 100 percent fine since Sega no longer makes money from these games but as a collector myself I understand that people want to play on the legit gd-rom. However, when some games are selling in the 300-400 dollar price range such as illbleed I can see how others won't be able to have that specific title in their collection.

I know everyone's best and worst games are going to be purely subjective in context, but in actuality, from both a design, experience, and sales perspective, Sonic Shuffle really should have been on this list. Broken AI that effectively cheats no matter what difficulty you play on, boring and re-hashed sprite design, overall a less fun carbon copy of Mario Party, which ironically was from the same developer (HudsonSoft) due to Sega contracting them to produce a multiplayer game on the Dreamcast, but only giving them 5 months to do so. I bought it full price from Funcoland back in 2000, and it was one of but a handful of moments in gaming where I definitely felt like I got cheated out of $50. I knew in hindsight that the game we got was Sega's fault, not HudsonSoft.

I had Championship Surfer on the PS1 and while it wasn't a great game, I really liked it for what it was and found it easy to pick up and play a few rounds while waiting for my Mom to get ready or something. To see there's a version with music, that would have been amazing!

I loved me some MK Gold back in the day. It was the last MK I purchased until MK9 on XB360. Now the rest I agree with, especially that NFL QB Club. I fell for it as well, grew frustrated with it, and traded the game in within 2 weeks.

Soul Calibur was not their game. But they released Ready to Rumble on the same day, which I think is also much better than MK Gold, so that would be a better comparison.

I did just pick up a dreamcast for our christmas, and I like to think I know which ones are good and which ones suck the big one. but this list certainly helped me with the latter, haha. luckily I don't think I've had the displeasure of playing any of these, so at least I won't make the mistake of picking them up.

This Spirit of Speed reminds me this Racing mission in first Mafia Game, this one which everyone said that is very difficult. I like Your videos, trough those I started to collect Sega Consoles and games. Very nice voice to hear, entertaining videos about Sega. That's quality content, keep doing it :).
