In late May, Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 #765 operated a series of public excursions over Horseshoe Curve during the 3-day Memorial Day weekend. Starting from Enola Yard in Harrisburg each morning, 765 traveled west on the former Pennsylvania Railroad Middle Division to Lewistown in order to board passengers. The train then continued west to Altoona with a spectacular ascent of the 1.8% grade to the summit at Gallitzin, including a trip over the famous Horseshoe Curve. After a layover in Altoona for lunch, 765 retraced her route to Lewistown and then Harrisburg.

Wonderful footage! Counting the aux water tender and the two non-assisting heritage units, I count that as 20 car equivalents in that consist....an amazing performance for the 765. It proves once again that the demise of steam on class 1 railroads was not due to capability issues but solely to economics. Thanks to FWRHS for keeping the history alive for subsequent generations who would otherwise have missed out on the excitement!

well thats just it, the steamers took more crew and upkeep, and fuel in water and coal, then a diesle electro just needing diesle or say bunker oil. The steamers were a mature technology, at that point with well over 100 years of development and practice, and they could produce more power per size due to weight due to more traction then a diesle, it was not for lack of power, they were just more expensive to run, and took more men to keep going. the 765 is 4000 hp same as the new ge locos.

It looks to me that it would be difficult for the engineers to see up ahead without hanging out the side of the cab. Am I wrong about that?
