I have a theory that Stede's story about the man with a hook for a head is actually a sort of unconscious allegory about himself and how he sees his life. He can't eat (get any pleasure or fulfillment from ordinary life) and he doesn't kiss because nobody likes him (Stede feels alienated and unlikable because his own dad didn't like him, followed by his peers, and then his wife). I think this explains why he was so befuddled by Ed kissing him and wanting to be with him - it must have seemed totally unreal and unbelievable, based on all of Stede's previous experience of life and his own concept of himself.
