Hey I am curious about the formulae in the AISC. Do all the formulae have a theoretical derivation or are they empirical? Asking because many at interviews are asking us this..

I was taught the following method for high level hand calcs: - find tension load to an individual anchor - then treat that force acting on a portion of the plate back to the column (typically this becomes a point load at the end of a fixed cantilever beam calc) - size the plate thickness depending on what plastic section modulus (Z) you need in combination with a steel grade to get an adequate moment capacity of the plate. boom - a semi quick baseplate calc for high level review

I’m wondering about using this procedure to have a steel plate on soil instead of concrete. Like the base plate to support an outrigger. U will see that case for supporting and load distribution of things like large scale temporary boilers on a job site.

now THAT is a new one for me! but I can see the application you're talking about. youll have to make sure you have enough bearing area on the baseplates to support the unit. this will be calculated based on the soil allowable bearing capacity and then the strength of the baseplate needs to be calced so it does deform. most likely youll have a baseplate with stiffeners.

​@@Kestava_Engineering Thanks for the reply. I was thinking something similar to that. Maybe using grillage beams atop the plates too (if plates end up large enough) to ensure load distribution.
