In this case how will we provide end returns as the length of parallel welds is unequal ?

Mam while calculating Smin we have minimum thickness 8mm(thikness of bar) but u took 12mm as minimum thickness which is the thickness of gusset plate
@civilengg.withakriti25567 ай бұрын
While selecting the minimum size of the weld we consider the thicker plate. Hence, the gusset plate thickness of 12 mm has been considered.

Thanks for the problem. I have a question for you. Shouldn't it have been "the design strength of the WELD" rather than "the design strength of the JOINT". Because the design strength of the joint would be the minimum of the design strength of the weld and the yield strength of the plate. What would you say?
@civilengg.withakriti25567 ай бұрын
Yes, it’s right that the design strength of the entire joint will include the failure mechanism of the plate as well. However, at this level the question demands the design strength of the weld only. In the field the design strength will be calculated by considering the failure mechanisms of both the connection and the plate.

Mam is it necessary to provide the weld in such a way that in the unequal length ...What will happen if you have provide the full length of weld in top and bottom ...But in practically i have seen all the welds in uniform length at top and bottom irrespective of the steel section ... Please clarify my doubt mam
@civilengg.withakriti25563 жыл бұрын
You can revisit the moment calculations to determine the necessity of the length of the weld. The distribution of weld length depends on the section being used as the location of the centre of gravity of the section will influence the load distribution
@civilengg.withakriti25563 жыл бұрын
Practically equal welds may be provided because of a few reasons 1. Inadequate length provided 2. Weld has not been technically designed and is provided by the welder 3. The weld length provided on the upper portion is longer than that actually required there. Eg. 300mm is required at the upper edge of the angle and 500mm at the lower edge (near root), instead 500mm is provided on both the edges. - this will increase the cost slightly but increases workability

How can we know it is rolled section it is confusing because in some examples maximum size of weld calculated as s max = Thickness - 1.5
@civilengg.withakriti25563 жыл бұрын
The sections used directly from the steel table are rolled steel sections.. The ones made up by using plates are built up sections. Sometimes we join rolled sections as well to make built up sections
