This is so nice to watch. Unlike many other sword fighting videos out there, it seems that here you are evidently prioritizing not getting hit by the opponent rather than to score a hit. This makes it very nice to watch, longer fights (before a hit) and more thrilling to watch the fighters look for opportunities and react all the while trying to survive the encounter. Bravo! Much nicer than all those double hit videos out there, this looks legit. The experience with the weapons is evident as well.

The point digging in I think brings up an interesting issue - if you have a long sword (as in a sword with a long-ish blade) there is a real possibility of striking the ground if you aren't aware of where your point is. I've seen this happen quite a bit with broadsword students. On a nice floor it's slightly disconcerting, but on cobblestones or a grassy field there's a real chance of being disarmed or at least providing an opening for your opponent to exploit, so despite it being a freak accident, if you are training for "real world" combat outside the salle, the presence of the ground in relation to your weapon is worth bearing in mind. Note that in longer weapons like spear and quarterstaff, parrying is such a way as to bury your opponent's tip in the ground to secure an opening is considered a viable tactic.

@giantotter319

Chris seems like an absolute monster. I really hope to get into HEMA more over the new year. Shame my PLC course got in the way of training but I think my club should be able to keep using its second venue over 2017. I've only taken 3 classes so far and sparred once with longsword. My breathing was quite similar to yours here! Didn't help that the jacket I had to wear was drenched with a previous guy's sweat but whatever.

You've found Wikitenaur and have got a few books and a waster right? Pick an approach(so one historical style, one weapon, one schools interpretation etc) and understand the fundamentals, seek professional guidance as well when you can, travel or seek private tuition. Oh and youtube is great just be very careful. Go commence all the hard work. if youve already done all this then my apologies, just trying to offer friendly advice to someone who was in your place a few years ago.

Purchase an original text for study; something that is well research and well-known since you're on your own and will need as many resources as possible. Don't restrict yourself to one "style" such as Lichtenauer vs Fiore. You learn from each and gain new perspectives. I highly recommend Joachim Meyer's 1571 Rostock Manuscript, for example; you can get it on Amazon. I'm currently studying for my personal learning and management of my own HEMA club. There are several channels out there. Schola Gladiatoria. La Sala delle Armi. Academy of Historical Fencing. Bratislavsky sermiarsky. Join the HEMA Alliance Facebook page and check out HROARR. Look up wiktenauer, the HEMA wikipedia with manuscripts. If you believe you'll live near enough to a HEMA school one day, however, I recommend you prep with wrestling/grappling. Your body is the largest and most articulate piece of hardware that a fencer will ever be equipped with (sword=2 to 3 lbs. body = over 100 lb). The best fencers I have encountered often have a background in dancing or some striking/grappling art. In my club, two of my most promising students have a background in Japanese arts and scholastic wrestling. As a result they're quick, confident on their feet, fit, and accustomed to the rigors of martial arts/sports. If it floats your boat, take up kendo or FIE fencing. Among two of the best HEMA fencers I've practiced with have these backgrounds. The FIE fencer had better mastery over timing and distance than everyone else. The kendo gentleman was very comfortable closing distance (very dangerous once he learned ringen am schwert). Rather learn a substantial amount about how to manipulate your own body from a community of experienced individuals than start off on your own and flounder blindly. Then you'll be set up for success and be able to understand things such as body mechanics, distance, timing, etc once you start up HEMA. I've learned the most from HEMAists with these sorts of backgrounds who understand these things (aikido, mma, wrestling, karate, etc.) Fundamentally, all fighting share the same fundamental principles. Unless you have these basic understandings, the words of the Ancient Masters will remain enigmatic. Also, it may provide you the most fun in the meantime! Look for a teacher who is physically fit and capable, knows his/her stuff, is not full of BS, and is not an egotistical maniac. Choose wisely. This also reinforces my earlier point; since you don't have a HEMA teacher to begin with, find a teacher of some other art. Remember Lichtenauer's words: "Be a good grappler in wrestling; lance, spear, sword, and messer handle manfully"

The front part is protected, and it's very unlikely any opponent would attack the feet anyway, they're always moving and it would expose you a lot, having the sword down and stuff. It's the old debate of agility vs defense, I think the tradeoff here is worth it

Hand-hit is actually totally fine if you have appropriate hand protection. Like the SPES lobster heavy glove that Lianna is weaing, that is totally enough for full speed sparring. Same as the Sparring Glove that Skall is wearing in the video. But if you are using a Red Dragon glove or other weak protection gloves in longsword sparring. Then that will be very dangerious.
@bryanjaneliunas9051
@bryanjaneliunas9051 7 жыл бұрын
English Dogsoldier I think fingers will break regardless of the glove being metal. A specialized plastic and synthetic padding would probably be much better at absorbing blows. Metal gloves are still expensive tho! but padding up you hand with either glove will severely hinder the hand's agility and wouldn't be an accurate portrayal of an unarmed duel.

A ruleset is necessary to ensure practitioners don't break each other deliberately. HEMA tends to still use a bare minimum ruleset, so while it is a sport, it is still significantly less restrictive than fencing or kendo.
@Skallagrim
@Skallagrim 7 жыл бұрын
You have to understand that gloves/gauntlets are still the Achilles Heel of HEMA gear. The ones that offer plenty of protection limit the users dexterity a lot, so we have to find some kind of compromise. And hands / fingers are notoriously easy to break.

***** I know that hands cannot be protected, but remember what hema is. As kataki said it is so much less restricted than sport "sword-fighting", it is really strange how such simple thing is avoided. Its not like people will snipe hands and feet on purpose (although ive never been in a tourney but ive seen videos of people doing this mostly in poland). I think it is unfair to not score hand hits based on just safety. Its same as not thrusting in sca or without doing any research i think that you cant thrust legs in olympic fencing. What i meant here is that i agree discouraging people hitting hands on purpose, but i dont understand why is so much realism removed as in real life hands could have been hurt a lot even without trying to do so.

i'm really glad for the slow-mo, because it looks alot like flailing, then they slow it down and you see all the technique and the actuall intent of the move

I know you still have a climb to be the duelist you desire to be, but I am amazed at how far you've come from your first sparring videos. Watching this reminds me of seeing belt test of my friends martial arts schools growing up. Seriously you have improved a lot and any warrior would be happy to have you as a shield brother.... or blade brother as it were.

I gotta say Skall, I'm really liking these videos. The commentary and the slow-mo really help me follow along. My only complaint is for some parts, I'd have liked another camera angle, but I understand that might not be feasible right now. I hope you continue making these sparring videos, keep up the great work.
