tom that was my job for 43 years i was a bricklayer at great lakes steel. i relined so many hot metal cars i could not give you a number. loved my job. RETIRED NOW.

I was looking for scenes of steel mills to make 3d models for a video game I work on as a hobby. Wow, the detail of what you built here is amazing! I can only imagine how long it took to complete (and is it ever really completed,lol). Anyway, your video gives me a great layout to use as a guide. Thanks for the video. I was smiling through the whole thing!

Really great looking steel plant I must say!! Well done!! Where I work at bhp steel there’s no way hot steel/iron is transported by rail It’s just far too slow for the short distance it has to go And would be highly expensive We use huge cress road going machines that huge pots Only thing we use rail for is out going cold rolled steel And coal trains in 3 times a day It would be far too many run arounds and switching for our plants layout Great work though!!!

Do you have one of your coke works? Did 2 years coke works at US Steel Fairless Works and another 2 years in the rolling mill back in the early 70's.

Just a curious question. Any reason the switcher could not back the empties (subs) in to the Blast Furnace and avoid two run around moves?? Very nice video. We are setting up ops for our steel mill on the club's layout. Doc Tom

no , The lower level is the Pittsburgh And West Virginia Railroad, It had two interchanges with the URR

Just curious, why weigh the cars? Is it so the crew has an extra move to make to stretch out the sequence?

The cars are weighted due to being very light from Walthers. I use bird shot with white glue. In real like the cars have a capacity of 80 ton to 100 ton of liquid hot metal. The furnaces only produce so much per tap. So I only move cars due to amount produced. Normally two subs per tap . About 4 taps per 8 hours. My operators only do one movement of Hot metal per session. The "CREW" has 12 other jobs to finish within the plant. Two operators run the mill. One is "CREW" one is Ingram Yardmaster he handles the Yard and the interchange trains from the P&WV/ PRR/ P&LE.

I was just wondering why the “loaded” and “empty” cars are weighed at the scale. I thought cars were weighed for billing purposes.

That's where that fire was in real life 2018. Still lawsuits going on over that I believe. They spent like 20 million after that to get that plant up to code as it should have been prior. At least that is what I read.
