@@deeznuts23yearsago Damascus steel is a type of steel with certain impurities that was used in India in the past; what we usually call Damascus steel or Damascus pattern steel (we should use this more than simply Damascus) refers to the style given to a metal that looks kind of like the original Damascus steel, but the real name is pattern welded steel. Don't take it the wrong way I'm not a snob I'm just trying to inform people but I recommend anyone to research themselves also because I could be wrong too.

You can't. Damascus is layers of different steel. High carbon and low carbon. That is what makes Damascus. A shit scrubbing pad of extremely low quality metal will not make this or anything else of any decent quality.

​@@Bob-Bob1 Most of the weight was in the metal powder he added to the can anyways, so very little of the steel was from the sponge/scouring pad. On top of that, he used a high carbon steel core, which is why the edge of the finished blade has no pattern but the rest of it does. This knife would do it's job, and well.

​@@spaghettiman3523 фуфло изготавливают, а не дамаск. Внешне только похож. Настоящий дамаск, он же булат делался из выплавленного из болотной руды железа. Добывали в Устюге-Железном и Гусе-Железном. В это железо добавляли часть метеорита упавшего в средние века на территорию современного Ярославля. Допетрить до секрета не сложно. Достаточно повторить процесс, куски метеорита до сих пор находят в тех краях. Не маленький был. По рисунку настоящего булата можно определить процент добавления метеорита.

Flux. It helps bind metals by filling the place of air pockets between metals. That is the big spark or molten shower you typically see in the videos. As the metal is mashed together it is forced out making sure there is less of a chance of air pockets making the steel have weak points. On a lower grade scale you can make due with things like fine sand or powdered glass. It will work but typically not as good. As for the video, the crap steel scrubbing pad they use would not make anything good let alone what they show. Also Damascus is made by layering high carbon steel with low carbon steel. that is what makes the design, flexibility and strength of the blade. You can't make a Damascus blade with 1 set level of carbon steel.
