And for the love of god, DO NOT wear any polyester clothing if you're going to do this... Unless, of course, you want the picture to also have sparks & flames in the shape of a human!

Been doing fireworks and sparklers for nearly 40 years and this is some really cool stuff!! Knew since I was kid that steel wool burns, but never thought of doing this. Very impressive - Very soon the sparks will fly at my place and there'll be a hot time in the old town tonite!

It has been raining here for 4 days, not a very enjoyable 4rth of July weekend so we took advantage of a break in the weather to get in some steel wool shots with my husband doing the spinning. They turned out amazing, thanks for the tutorial on how to do this. Was a blast and all safety precautions were taken. It was way to wet for decent fireworks shots so thanks for the option on some great shots.

This tutorial was great. I got an idea from the photo of the tunnel with the sparks at the entrance. I used my girlfriend as an experiment and did the same thing, but had her hold a umbrella over herself while the sparks flowed around her. It came out fantastic, just wanted to say thanks for the tutorial and the idea.

Just wanted to say thanks for a very excellent tutorial. We have an abandoned arched stone tunnel a short drive away that I plan to do some shots in with the steel wool - your tutorial was perfect in every way with the tips and techniques. I'll likely go with two whisks (one on each end of the cable) to get a double spin effect. Appreciate the tut!

Just an FYI...the grades of fine steel wool is measured as "aught" not called "zero" - you would speak them as... single aught, double aught, triple aught, and four aught. Nice guide though.

I dont know what camera you have, but on a DSRL, there is a function where you can manually adjust the focus, or let it do automatically. On the lens there is a switch between AF - MF (Auto focus, manual focus). If you place a little LED where you are going to stand, it can automatically focus on that LED. I always use a big flashlight, shine myself with it and let a friend focus on me. If it is focussed like that, your sparks will be sharp, and not blurry, you can do artistic things with focus.

Copper (II) sulphate pentahydrate 500g $75 (pg 104 of the pdf), Potassium chloride 500g $40 (pg 114), Lithium chloride anhydrous 500g $124 (pg 109), Calcium chloride anhydrous 500g $64 (pg 103). If you don't have a chemistry supplier near by you can often get a great range of salts at a gardening shop, eg copper sulfate. Your supermarket will have often have low sodium salt which is usually just potassium chloride.

Try using a dark neutral density filter in front of your lens for images taken in daylight situations. That way you can get some good long exposures that show motion such as rain fall

Very good sparkling steel wool pictures. But instead of 30 s shutter speed it's good to use a remote for both start and end of the photo, that way you don't capture light during a longer time than you want to have for the movements which improve the light track sharpness.
