We steel wool every new window that we get. 100%. If we haven't done a window in 12 months, we steel wool. I used to do every window back in the day with it and that was 10hrs a day, 6 days a week. It's a great way to feel what is on a window especially for a construction cleanup. It's given me so much security on knowing that the windows are fully cleaned. I bet I've used hundreds of pounds of it. I think the feel that the steel wool gives the user of what is happening on the window is super crucial.

Many new windows are now low-e. Very expensive in part because of a microscopically thin layer of coating that is applied to the surface of the glass. Imagine what using steel wool does to that coating.

@@tejbirsingh5661 Low-e coating is on side 2 of insulated windows which is on the outside of the interior pane. No contact is made with steel wool.

@DuckDodger701 some windows are low-e 3 or 4, where the coating is on the exposed side(s) of the glass. It all depends on the manufacturer. Even being wrong once could ruin tens of thousands of dollars in expensive windows

@@tejbirsingh5661 Negative. Side 3 will cause manufacturer defect and side 4 is still manufacturer defect. Don't expect me to deal with other peoples failures. I'm working on over a million windows right now and I've never had an issue out side of this. Thank you and enjoy the ride.

I find that steel wool does leave windows with micro scratches. Most customers never notice but I do. And it is permanent. So I've stopped using steel wool and now use the walnut pad. It's not as good at removing debris but leaves windows unaffected.

Yes! I used it once in direct sunlight and noticed it left tiny scratches so now I'm very careful

Definitley only really noticeable to someone paying such close attention to see if it does in fact scratch. But have you considered if the glass was tempered?

@nathanneufeld269 Yes, I've used it on both tempered and non-tempered glass. I see micro scratches on both. And I am concerned about low-e glass. These windows are really expensive, and using steel wool will damage the low-e coating.

In automotive cleaning we use a clay bar to remove the last bit of contamination and get the surface really smooth. Helps stop windshield wiper judder, too. Curious to hear if you think there's an application for that in building window cleaning.

Maybe the fine grade to medium grade artificial clay bar scrub pads and soap and water would be ok on glass, but as great as clay is on paint... it's gonna be way to slow on big pieces of glass...

This might be a silly question, but should you soap up the window again AFTER using steel wool or pads, before the squeegee, or is that just a waste of time? I just get the feeling that if you loosen a heap of grime and then put rubber straight on the window there's more chance of smearing or prematurely wearing out rubber where, if you use your applicator again first it will lift a lot of that grime and re-lube ready for the squeegee.

I got a call to clean restaurant windows on a 100 year old building and the windows have all sorts of buildup and possibly some paint as well. Do you suggest 0000 steel wool for the initial cleaning? The glass is so old it has little waves to it

I do use steel wool dry, but I prefer to do that with buffing out finger prints or removing bug spots without needing to clean the whole window again

For some reason white pads are hard to come by in my state or it costs like $40 to ship them out. Is there any alternative? Would a regular kitchen sponge work?

The green scotchbrite pads will scratch glass! The blue sided sponge pads should be ok.

I’ve been doing this now for a few years and just noticed my strip washer or ( t bar scrubber ) is getting rusty the day after I use steel wool on a window job is this normal? I’m think some debri from the steel wool is getting stuck on it and causing it to rust which then leads me to worry about customers windows sills rusting or debris on the windows rusting on the glass itself haven’t had a call from a customer saying that’s happened yet but it worries me because I’ve now had 2-3 strip washers rust on me

I’ve had this happen. I try to rinse my mop off in the bucket when the job is finished. I noticed the steel wool gets rusty quickly on a hot day, within an hour sometimes and should be thrown out. They will make orange stains on white vinyl frames where the little bits of metal are left if they aren’t wiped off. The customer probably won’t notice but we will and we won’t be happy about it.

I have a job tomorrow with very old single pain windows. I believe from the 1930s. Should I be considered as far as scratching? Are old windows any more of less durable?

I use a white pad and anything left over gets the razor. I question if there's any abrasive difference whatsoever with the walnut pad and white pad.

also, you mentioned not to use these on tinted windows. how do we get greasy splatters off a tinted inside kitchen window? customers tell me they do not want any chemicals used on tinting (ie. the installer tells them just to clean with water only). Water doesn't remove the grease!

Can I use grade 000 steel wool on tempered glass

Yes. I’ve confirmed that 000 steel wool is as safe to use as 0000. I’ve never tried 00 but was told that it will definitely scratch. The only glass I’ve ever scratched with steel wool was on an interior/indoor french door with thin fragile french panes.
