I was an 18 year old USC freshman who got a sideline pass to this game from my aunt (who was the team photographer). What an epic experience being on the field in front of 100K fans and watching Heisman winner Charles White run over Ohio State for the win. This USC team had 45 NFL draft picks, 2 Heisman winners, 4 NFL Hall of Famers and numerous All-Americans on the roster. This team is considered by many historians to be the greatest college football team of all time, despite not winning the National Title because of a tie with Stanford.

Can anyone name a better college offensive line than USC's that season? Munoz is a Hall of Famer, Van Horne played forever with the Bears, Foster was a Pro Bowl player and longtime Dolphins starter, Budde started a lot of games with the Chiefs, and Foote had starts with the Vikings. And Brenner, the tight end, also had a long NFL career.
@ynp1978
@ynp1978 4 жыл бұрын
You are correct.....but left out a couple of guys. Two freshmen. One was Don Mosebar who started 10 games that year while Munoz was injured and went on to a solid NFL career with the Raiders. Another reserve that started at least one game was Bruce Matthews who would also end up in the NFL Hall of Fame after a stellar career with the Oilers/Titans. He is the uncle of Clay Matthews.

I was a junior at tosu in '79-'80, and after the bucks knocked off um in ann arbor to finish a surprising undefeated regular season/big 10 title, my grandmother surprised me w/$300 to pay for a student rose bowl trip. first time on a plane, first time west of the mississippi, first time drinking coors beer (seemed revolutionary at the time-lol), a lot of tourist stuff (disneyland, san diego zoo, farmers market, cbs television city, multiple beaches, seeing dick van dyke in the music man at the pantages) and some not so touristy stuff (like getting lost making a booze run as dusk set and having an lapd motorcyle cop volunteer direction back to my hotel, since i'd apparently wandered into watts and he thought me wearing a tosu sweatshirt made me stand out in the wrong way). even on 4 hours sleep, the parade was surprisingly amazing, and there is no better cfb setting than the rose bowl. the '79 season was really the birth of a legacy of talented buckeye wr's, w/doug donley and gary williams having great seasons. he's more well known for his issues off the field now, but art schlichter imho was the first true dual threat qb (and this is coming from someone who idolized rex kern growing up) in program history, and i believe remains the only 4-year starter at qb ever at tosu. on defense the buckeye front 7 was small but scrappy, with jim laughlin, the much under-appreciated marcus marek and keith ferguson shining. i'm not sure if mark sullivan topped 200 lbs, and he was playing middle guard (looked like rudy out there)!! the secondary was talented-todd bell and ray ellis would have solid nfl careers. the game was tense and the atmosphere electric right down to the final minute. both teams had big plays and missed scoring opportunities. but you wondered if that mammoth trojan o-line would eventually wear down the bucks d, and on that final drive that's exactly what happened. the 75k usc fans in the stadium sounded more like 750k as white busted off those 1st 2 long runs. it was a long bus ride after a long day, with plenty of trojan fans flashing the 2-finger victory signs as we moved thru the park and up the hillside back to the street. but it was an unforgettable game and unforgettable trip for 1 20 year old ohioan. until this year i'd been to pasadena every time since that tosu was there, and i hope it's the last one i miss.

Marcus Allen was an incredible back as well playing fullback and blocking like he did especially on that last TD Marcus dove over the middle and got a piece of the defender so White could get in.
