Ryan Shazier's injury came in the first quarter of his team's 23-20 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals during a "Monday Night Football" game.

DPT here. When an injury occurs to the spinal cord the entire function of the spinal cord shuts down below the injury in what is known as "spinal shock". Much like a concussion, It takes about a week for the system to reboot before the severity of the injury is known (other than a CT/MRI showing a severed spine). Another 6-12 months is needed before the patient regains his max potential (meaning what ever he/she has left). The fact that he already has movement below the site of injury is a good sign. I work with SCI patients, most go on and live independent and fulfilling lives especially when the injury is located below C7 level.

IMO, football is a dangerous game, we know that. Even if you don't get that one, unlikely career ending injury, your still dealing with symptoms from all the hits to the head for life. THAT BEING SAID, all the evidence is out in the open, anyone that plays football accepts those risks, so this shouldn't turn into some boycott football bullshit. Hell, I'm Canadian, hockey is no different really, but those players accept the risk of head injuries. There are more important things to get upset over than if football is safe.

LM Djnchen you're stupid too. The nfl used to be WAY more hard core than it is now. With all the rules and penalties making the game safe, it's nearly unwatchable. When they created the horse collar rule, Lawrence taylor said, "how the hell are you supposed to make a tackle?" You can't be much over 15 to think that way. Look up some videos of football in the 60s - the 80s. Those guys were gladiators. It's nearly tag football these days. Players go for the penalty instead of the yards. Every big hit you see has a flag. The kick offs suck. 'Defenseless receivers.' It's all crap.

When I was a younger man, I loved the hard hits. I'm 53 now, and I've changed. These types of plays need to be met with more severe consequences. I like what the college game is doing: reviewing the play if "targeting" is called, and if confirmed, the player is ejected from the game. THEN, the league should suspend players for TWO additional games, even if the team is in/near-to-making the playoffs. C'mon NFL, get it together.

@smohs6 жыл бұрын
Theres nothing clean about the crown of the helmet hitting a guy in the chin. Both hits were dirty but only one of them was out of intent to break up the play. Ju Ju's hit was unnecessary in the scheme of the play and was obvious targeting just like burficts was against AB two years ago. The hit on AB in the end zone is more bang-bang football to get him to drop the ball, just like Michael said.
@corey22326 жыл бұрын
Maybe you haven't been around lately, but helmet to helmet contact, leading with your head and driving it into someone else, is not a "textbook block." That's a good way to get yourself & the other player injured. It's a stupid block if you want to retire without brain damage.

Devin Kendrick theres blocking and thens there's excessive, unnecessary "blocking". What he did is not a clean block which is why he was flagged for it. There were two penalties against him on that play if you recall. One for unnecessary roughness and one for taunting.

Has nothing to do with "the liberal media." The NFL denied that the sport was this dangerous, or even semi-responsible for long-term brain injuries for decades. It's extremely detrimental to people's health, nothing wrong with reporting that. Sounds like you're the sensitive one since you want silence. These people know the risks, but in the past this wasn't true. "Football is violent. We know, it's supposed to be." And? Talking about it is bad? No. Trotting people out for our entertainment and turning a blind eye to it is bad. If it hurts your feelings to hear and see the damage it causes, maybe YOU shouldn't watch it. I enjoy the game, always have, but the narrative now is not even CLOSE to the same as it was even just a decade ago. Hell, in the late 80's early 90's there was no discussion about this stuff. Just because "this used to happen every week, every game" doesn't mean it's suddenly ok. Also, people losing complete feelings of their lower extremities didn't happen every game every week. Athletes are far larger, stronger, faster, and therefore more dangerous when they use their body as a weapon. Were there violent hits? Absolutely, but life-altering injuries were not an every game issue. Using exaggeration to glorify the "good ol' days" is ignorant.
@brainoverbrawn34046 жыл бұрын
Have these people ever watched football? Quit moaning like this is something unseen. Up to a few years ago, this was the norm in every game, and people cheered it on. Yes, the game has changed to improve player safety, but stop whining like people were shrieking at these hits. These are the kind of plays that actually made football popular.

I once cared, now the NFL (No Fans Left) League is just a field of nobody's running around, without anyone watching. No longer matters!

lmao! Do you support Trump? Are you against the freedom to protest in this country? Thanks to Mr. Trump the NFL has gotten even more attention and fans!

Mr Razorburn I'm a Trump supporter but I love NFL. If the NFL allows them to protest, they're fine. P.S. AJG should've had a 3rd touchdown. Bogus holding call.

then why in hell did you watch this? and see a doctor because you obviously need some serious help... the stadium was full and millions of people were watching

The hit on A.B. was in the endzone. I don't blame db's on taking shots because that's the only thing the defender has left to stop the td.

I love Ryan and little Buck Fan. I don't think you'll ever play football again but I just pray he can walk again. The biggest thing we should take away from this is don't lead with your head. These players are smart enough to learn how to lead with their shoulder. The hit didn't looking very brutal at all, but look what happened. We should all pray for this young man. God bless you Ryan

What some people don't understand is, all those old school hits we enjoyed and want back in football... Those same guys are now suing NFL owners left and right. If you're a business owner, you do all you can to stop having to settle class action suits. Unfortunately those rule changes has altered the quality of the game.

This is football... industry & manufacturers often deal with injured employees (a burn in a steel mill, as an electrician, or a cook)... construction foremen, geologists & warehouse operators wear protected steel enforced footwear @ often helmets while operating complex heavy machinery... still people get injured. Someone please equate avg. & years spent on salary per individual between & the possible occurrence of an injury against adding the ability to support self & family following the injury Then figure available time off (while being paid) & possible future opportunity (analyst, announcer or any other role)
