I’m so thankful I spent my twenties in the 70’s in Dublin. The music was incredible. Planxty, Clannad, the Bothy Band, the Chieftains, Fairport Convention, Steelye Span, Pentangle. It was a magical time.

Ken Nicol was the best thing that happened to Steeleye in recent years & it was sad when he left. My wife & I saw Steeleye @ Buxton Opera House in December 2009 which I think was the last concert on that tour & Ken's last concert with them - we had a pleasent chat with him after the show. The performed this song that night - most fitting to the 21st December...

Wow! Awareness of the sun and time on the earth. This song helps connect you to the past and the progress of time.

I love this song, but I’m a bit of a pagan.

Yule was a huge midwinter festival long before the birth of Jesus. Pope Gregory the great decided to baptize Yule and make it the birthday of Jesus.

I’ve loved Steeleye span since the early 70’s. I’m also a bit of a pagan so I love solstice songs.

I'm sure I saw Ken perform this song with The Albion Band when he was with them,

I’ve been a fan and friend of Steeleye since 1972, and have seen them live from L.A. to NYC to London. My favorite incarnation is the Knight-Johnson-Kemp one, though the earlier ones with Martin Carthy are also sublime. So glad they have endured.

I love the stuff Martin Carthy did with the late, great Dave Swarbrick.

I love Martin Carthy, especially when he used to sing with Dave Swarbick. All of our heroes are going away.

But the group must move on and develop, mustn't it. I presume you mean Julia Littman? We saw them on the recent Wintersmith Tour, and he and they all sounded fine to me. I wonder how they'll be with a new fiddler?

...or, indeed, Julian L! Sorry

They have a new fiddler simply because legendary Pete Knight quit the band a couple of years ago... ;-)

This new guy Ken. A disaster for the group, he doesn't fit in at all in my opinion and the usual liveliness of the other group members is absent.
