Gotta realize that the Dan creates an entire atmosphere around their song concepts. This song, about a drug dealer living his happy life supplying the rich but shallow LA crowd with goodies, reflects that ultra-slick, cruising around LA in a fancy convertible feeling.

Welcome to the Steely Dan rabbit hole: the closer you listen, the *more* you listen. 🤩 They reward attention. There is a *lot* of work invested in what you hear. I love this track, and think it is sadly overlooked. So much to enjoy: The bouncing beat, sort of like a basketball. :) The bouncing beat/guitar/keyboards/bass contrasted against the mournful, foreboding horns, just like the lavish, happy lifestyle, leading to ruin. Our narrator, dying for validation (literally), imagining himself a star--as he destroys them with drugs. And of course the stellar musicianship. I'll leave it to others to fill you in on Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, the founding members, who swapped whole bands of stellar musicians in and out to play the scores they wrote.

Lyrics about a fictitious Los Angeles celebrity Athlete - Hoops McCann - who is a Sports star, wealthy and famous, but also secretly addicted to cocaine; but the twist is that he's not only a user but also secretly deals coke to his coterie of proteges and his circle of 'celebrity wanna-be friends'. These lyrics are a criticism to L.A./Hollywood celebrity culture of the late 1970s. But the music has great jazzy chord changes and an infectious 'hook', and some outstanding guitar work from Steve Khan, as well as a perfect piano solo by Rob Mounsey.. Also most notably is the groove/beat - not the typical late 1970s 'Disco' drum pattern; note the constant bass drum on every down beat, is a way this groove more in tune w/ a late 1980s/early 1990s -type of 'Dance Music' style. Quite revolutionary for its time if you ask me. Steely Dan is essentially mix/Fusion of Pop-Jazz-Rock, w/ elements of R&B, Soul, Blues.

The Nightfly, his first solo album, is spectacular. But... Kamakiriad is even better. I haven't seen a single reaction video to a song from Kamakiriad. Check out Trans-Island Skyway, Springtime or Florida Room. The entire album is stunning. I enjoy your reactions, you both speak so well about the music and how it affects you personally. Donald Fagen & Walter Becker met at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York and immediately clicked with their influences of blues, jazz & rock. Their talents are the incredible complexity of the songs they wrote, with so many music scales for the musicians they hired, that many people believe it is overproduced....I call it perfection in music! Yes, you can call it fusion of sorts yet I think Donald & Walter are unique bringing together a suite of musicians that are all brilliant in their own right. The song you have selected, as many have commented, is about the LA drug scene. The lyrics are very cryptic, often referring to many known people, but hidden behind false names. And to get a feel for the lyrics, “Local boys will spend a quarter, just to shine the silver bowl,” is a reference to addicts paying $250 just to get the drug residue from a cocaine serving bowl.

I concur. Even the Beatles had a couple songs that could be classified as "bad" and not in a good way. Ever hear, You Know My Name"?? We're they high or what? I was a little disappointed by the fact that your reaction did not seem to be focused on the "Mysterious" lyrics. The Dan's music always has some ongoing undertone as a message. Most of the messages are somewhat sinister and that (for me) is a big reason that I've been a fan for 49years. It is next to impossible to assign one genre to Steely Dan. This track gives me a Progressive Rock/Jazz/Fusion vibe. They are well known for using many "layers" in their songs. The core band is Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. Steve Kahn played guitar on this track. They hire world class musicians from many genre's on every album. This album took a year and a half to record partly due to Walter Becker getting hit by a car and later his girlfriend died of a drug overdose during taping. When it finally came out it was the most expensive album ever recorded at the time. That said... it's a masterpiece.

Wow you guys are starting off in the deep end haha Lots of folks here are recommending the usual hits but I think you should stay on this path where you're getting exposed to the more complex stuff first.

My thoughts exactly. That's why I rec'd both songs to Pat & George. I wanted to introduce them to some of their more complex works before recommending Reelin, Kid Charlemagne or Rikki.

More things to know about them: mixed rock and roll + a little jazz for their first 5 albums; jazz + a little R&B on Aja and Gaucho. Jazz again for their comeback albums in 2000 and 2002 (not as good as their best 70s work, IMO). Sub’d!

I think Fagen's work on The Nightfly and Kamakiriad is on par with much of the Steely Dan catalog.

@@sooutrageous007 Oh, yeah, I agree. Wonderful albums. In spite of the acclaim he received as half of SD, he is still under-appreciated.

To me it's quirky but not very strange. If you want to hear strange listen to Frank Zappa. Strange but beautiful
