Welcome to the Steely Dan rabbit hole: the closer you listen, the *more* you listen. 🤩 They reward attention. There is a *lot* of work invested in what you hear. I love this track, and think it is sadly overlooked. So much to enjoy: The bouncing beat, sort of like a basketball. :) The bouncing beat/guitar/keyboards/bass contrasted against the mournful, foreboding horns, just like the lavish, happy lifestyle, leading to ruin. Our narrator, dying for validation (literally), imagining himself a star--as he destroys them with drugs. And of course the stellar musicianship. I'll leave it to others to fill you in on Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, the founding members, who swapped whole bands of stellar musicians in and out to play the scores they wrote.

Gotta realize that the Dan creates an entire atmosphere around their song concepts. This song, about a drug dealer living his happy life supplying the rich but shallow LA crowd with goodies, reflects that ultra-slick, cruising around LA in a fancy convertible feeling.

Lyrics about a fictitious Los Angeles celebrity Athlete - Hoops McCann - who is a Sports star, wealthy and famous, but also secretly addicted to cocaine; but the twist is that he's not only a user but also secretly deals coke to his coterie of proteges and his circle of 'celebrity wanna-be friends'. These lyrics are a criticism to L.A./Hollywood celebrity culture of the late 1970s. But the music has great jazzy chord changes and an infectious 'hook', and some outstanding guitar work from Steve Khan, as well as a perfect piano solo by Rob Mounsey.. Also most notably is the groove/beat - not the typical late 1970s 'Disco' drum pattern; note the constant bass drum on every down beat, is a way this groove more in tune w/ a late 1980s/early 1990s -type of 'Dance Music' style. Quite revolutionary for its time if you ask me. Steely Dan is essentially mix/Fusion of Pop-Jazz-Rock, w/ elements of R&B, Soul, Blues.

Welcome to the world of Steely Dan. They are very hip. I'd suggest the song Black Cow. Tremendous. Also Donald Fagen, keyboards and singer, has some excellent solo albums. The Nightfly, his first solo album, is spectacular. But... Kamakiriad is even better. I haven't seen a single reaction video to a song from Kamakiriad. Check out Trans-Island Skyway, Springtime or Florida Room. The entire album is stunning. I enjoy your reactions, you both speak so well about the music and how it affects you personally. I saw a few of your videos, I look forward to viewing more and can't wait to see what you review in the future. Great stuff!

Donald Fagen & Walter Becker met at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York and immediately clicked with their influences of blues, jazz & rock. Their talents are the incredible complexity of the songs they wrote, with so many music scales for the musicians they hired, that many people believe it is overproduced....I call it perfection in music! Yes, you can call it fusion of sorts yet I think Donald & Walter are unique bringing together a suite of musicians that are all brilliant in their own right. The song you have selected, as many have commented, is about the LA drug scene. The lyrics are very cryptic, often referring to many known people, but hidden behind false names. And to get a feel for the lyrics, “Local boys will spend a quarter, just to shine the silver bowl,” is a reference to addicts paying $250 just to get the drug residue from a cocaine serving bowl.

I concur. Even the Beatles had a couple songs that could be classified as "bad" and not in a good way. Ever hear, You Know My Name"?? We're they high or what? But SD is flawless and one reason is Fagen is obsessed with perfection and grace. (see Time out of Mind) he does about a million takes on every song. Yet the musicians love him. Or maybe it's respect. On there off days, they, Donald and Walter (RIP) probably listen to Brubeck. Or Ray Charles.

Hello guys, You are correct in that the instrumental aspect of the song is really intricate and complex, which is the hallmark of Steely Dan and/or Donald Fagen (solo) productions. I was a little disappointed by the fact that your reaction did not seem to be focused on the "Mysterious" lyrics. The Dan's music always has some ongoing undertone as a message. Most of the messages are somewhat sinister and that (for me) is a big reason that I've been a fan for 49years. If you did discuss it then I stand corrected and if you wish to comment then that would be great. Thanks, Guys! Tim

Where have you guys been??? 🤭Steely Dan is a singularly iconic phenomenon whose lyrics sometimes have a mind-boggling depth of perception on life. Seriously, how many artists would write a song about the Caves of Altamira?🤯In my opinion, Pretzel Logic was their coming of age album. Prior, they could really be classified as "rock". 1 more personal note: Thanks to my college roomie back in '77, Black Cow became my theme song. (i wasn't quite THAT bad, tho😏) 🤟🏼 So glad you discovered this wonderful treasure!!!

Guys, this is an unusual steely Dan song to choose for a beginner. Choose an easier one like Peg, Josie or Black Cow.

Steely Dan is a genre of its own. A type of Jazz-rock fusion. The Aja album has more great tunes. Continue exploring!

You are doing great songs, but all Steely Dan songs are a little different slice of Heaven! Checkout “Home at Last”, one of my favorite deeper cuts!!

It is next to impossible to assign one genre to Steely Dan. This track gives me a Progressive Rock/Jazz/Fusion vibe. They are well known for using many "layers" in their songs. The core band is Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. Steve Kahn played guitar on this track. They hire world class musicians from many genre's on every album. This album took a year and a half to record partly due to Walter Becker getting hit by a car and later his girlfriend died of a drug overdose during taping. When it finally came out it was the most expensive album ever recorded at the time. That said... it's a masterpiece.

Not all their music is jazzy BTW. If you want to hear one without horns that’s straight ahead rock, try “ King of the World”.

In reality, a small-time, punk, drug dealer..." dealer to the stars" A typically LA super narcissist, he deludes himself into believing that he is as important, if not more so to the Holywood scene than are his celebrity clients. PS - I read. back in the day, the guys conceding that the much-hated monster -DISCO had been an influence of sorts on this album...

@@keithjones6023 yeah, well, you know how it is: liked Steely Dan, bought a couple of their albums, but by the eighties I was into other music. Hell, I’m a Zephead now, but back in the seventies, I fell away from them after Physical Graffiti. I’ve discovered so much music during the pandemic.......new artists as well as hearing music for the first time from bands I loved in the past.

@@w.geoffreyspaulding6588 l suppose l am stuck in the 70's to a degree, l do agree though that the Covid lockdowns have increased my interest in newer music. Reading other people's comments about bands not known to me have been an influence. I have bought some CD'S from newer bands like The Editors, Coldplay, Thirteen Senses, Keane.
