He’s an older guy, and being with a much younger woman of 19 initially makes him feel good, he feels younger, and confident because in his middle age, he can still attract beautiful young women; they can both enjoy the “Cuervo Gold” tequila and the “fine Columbian” cocaine, and that part is fun... but he’s finding out that beyond the fun partying they do together, they really haven’t much of anything in common at all, they don’t even have much to talk about. He’s finding out - with disbelief - that she’s so young, and so removed from his generation, that they aren’t in sync with each other, “we can’t dance together”... and that she doesn’t know the things which he thinks everyone should know, like who Aretha Franklin is, and he’s thinking, how is it possible that “she don’t remember The Queen Of Soul”...? so they can’t even do simple things together like listening to music. A classic Steely Dan track, and as usual, with a fantastic groove and great playing by the musicians, capped off with the stellar lyrics that Donald Fagan is known for. ❤️

In this song, an older man is seducing a 19-year-old girl. He's a bit conflicted, as her inexperience frustrates him when she doesn't even remember Aretha Franklin. However, on this particular night and with the help of some Cuervo Gold tequila, everything is wonderful. Steely Dan used a variety of musicians on their albums. On this track, Hugh McCracken played guitar, Rick Marotta was on drums, and Victor Feldman and Steve Gadd added percussion. Walter Becker also added guitar, and Donald Fagen played the Fender Rhodes electric piano and the synthesizer. Roger Nichols, who was one of the engineers on the Gaucho sessions, fashioned a drum machine they used on this track. Dubbed "Wendel," it was one of the first of its kind, and it allowed them to record Rick Marotta's drum parts and play them back with perfect precision. The LM-1, which was the first programable drum machine sold to the public that sampled real instruments, was introduced in 1980, the year Gaucho was released, so many assumed that's what Steely Dan used. They didn't, but there was a connection. Roger Linn, who created the LM-1, told Songfacts: "By coincidence, Roger and I had both bought our first computers in around 1975 at a place called Computer Power and Light in Studio City, an area of Los Angeles. Wendel used that same computer and a early but high-quality digital audio interface, running a program he had written to enter simple looping beats on the screen. A very creative and talented guy." The punch of those keyboards over this flow is DIVINE !! Those Jazz chords have such a sharp interjection in the announced phrase, yet it flows. It is like something is taking a bite out of your soul when those jazz chords drop on the electric organ, yet it is giving you something of benefit instead. Not easy to put into words. There is a Sincere smooth Rhythm here that is Universal. No ego/waste like todays music sells/tells you to be. Just pure flow of Truth. The ear hears that and that is where/why Steely Dan has put the effort in instead of a self fulfilling vanity adventure and a vain video. Pure to the origin. Well done Donald Fagen and Walter Becker and their 9 piece studio ace band. Timeless. Resonates with me. 🥳

@@ShamanWS6 Fagen and Becker complained to their engineer Roger Nichols that they wished there was a perfect drumming machine, and Roger told them he could build them one. So, they forked over $150,000 and Roger disappeared for a little while, and came back with a computer called Wendel. It was the world's first drum sampling machine. It was brutally difficult to program as it was all done in assembly language, but it worked. You can hear it on this song, in addition to about half the other songs on Gaucho like Glamour Profession and Time Out Of Mind. An improved version was later developed and used on Donald Fagen's The Nightfly solo album. Essentially there is a mix of real drumming and drum replacement on these songs. The real drummers came up with the groove, and the perfected versions of it were used on the record.

The line about Aretha got overtaken by history 5 years after this song when the Queen of Soul had a big comeback with multiple top 10 hits and heavy rotation on MTV. So the "Hey Nineteen" girl would definitely have known about Aretha when she was 24, which is kind of amusing.

@mowgli2071 I'm not saying the irony of the song isn't spot on. (Steely Dan's favorite sport is mocking their own generation, after all). I just thought it was funny that 4 or 5 years later that same 19 year old would probably have MTV on and be hearing Pink Cadillac and Who's Zoomin Who a lot.

What a great time I had with you! I am 62 years old and for us, music was shared. We sat around a console stereo and played our records. I was very young when this came out and my older friends introduced this and many cuts to me. Traditionally I am a progressive rock based fan but groups like Steely Dan helped me cross over to jazz fusion, blues and jazz at a young age! Get it Jamal!!!! See them live if you can, they still got this!!!!! thank you again!

Lee Salerno I think it had to with cocaine which is produced a lot in Colombia. The late 1970’s early 80’s was the peak of the cocaine culture so to speak. Plus it was a very social drug that went well with hard liquor like tequila as implied in the song. The narrator ‘s use of cocaine and alcohol. Made him more confident and talkative with this 19 year old girl.

Great reaction! You nailed it.. older guy seeing a younger girl, and how that isn't as easy as it might seem. This was from the last Steely Dan album (Gaucho) from the initial run, and was them at their most smooth and polished. Some people prefer their grittier stuff from the earlier albums - I personally think they peaked with Aja (the album before this one - with Peg, Deacon Blues, Josie, etc..), but do like this album a lot.

About 3 years ago, before my wife was diagnosed with cancer, I was out one night in Las Vegas at the invitation of some vendors to a dance club in Las Vegas where I live and work. Then I was 63 at the time, and 99% of the people waiting to get into the dance club (roughly 300 girls and boys in their 20's). The Bouncer looked at me and asked, "Why should I let you in?" and my vendor friend said, "Show him". I was pretty ignorant of protocols, so I showed him my picture taken of me aboard my warship during Vietnam. The Bouncer immediately pasted a gold star on my shirt and opened the gates, ahead of hundreds of 20-somethings. He told security, "Let this man in. He's a hero. Give him a special table." The many younger people in line, hearing this, become a silent, and waitresses escorted me to a special booth assigned specially to me. It was a far cry from the days of people willing to spit on me for coming home from overseas, having served in harm's way overseas immediately pasted a gold star on my shirt and opened the gates, pissing perhaps a hundred 20-somethings who at first became belligerent and loud. And he silenced them explaining that I was a war-time Veteran. Even the 20-sometings became quiet. Although I had no intent of entering this nightclub in the first place, doing so at request of one of my vendor friends, I was astonished at how instantly hundreds of young people, waiting in line, became respectful at the announced presence of an old veteran. It was one of the most extraordinary moments of my life, one for which I am not deserving, but for which I am most grateful on behalf the hundreds of heroes I had the privilege of serving with. As a sidenote that night, the club, upon my entrance, assigned me a special booth with 2 waitresses, who were both courteous and attentative. I stayed a short time before surrendering due to age. But this was a great credit to the people and businesses of Las Vegas as city. And a long-overdue acknowledgement of Veterans returning from harm's way overseas. I was proud of Las Vegas and its young people that night.
