As a guitar player myself, the kid is great but we need to comment on the solid low end. Bass player is REAL solid and the drummer is relaxed, REALLY good and playing the gig, not like he has his hair on fire. As a lifelong musician, THIS is the greatest thing to see. Great obs guys.
@MidWestConcertVideo28 жыл бұрын
The School of Rock program has, by my estimation, three times as many guitar players as any other instrument - so there is a lot of concentrating on that. But you're right, you can't have a band without a really solid rhythm section. From what I've seen, a lot of the AllStars directors try to put bands together with drummers and bass players who have played together for a long time. By the way, Brad Williamson, the kid with the bass sax is primarily a bassist and is awesome.
@andyinoregon8 жыл бұрын
You're so right. The earliest bass instrument in rock and roll was the baritone sax.

Just happened to go on a trip down memory lane and searched for footage of this tour, and I gotta say your comment made my day! I was the bass player on this song. We certainly had fun on these tunes, and it was such a treat to share the stage with so many incredibly talented musicians. I'm still playing music with some of them, even nearly 10 years later! Thanks for the kind words toward our often-overlooked rhythm section.

One of the coolest things I've seen on KZbin in ages. The guitar player's an ace, and I think he's got a realistic shot with the blonde hottie from the looks she was giving him during the lead breaks (the real reason I picked up the guitar 30 years ago).

That blond was me in 1973. lol not anymore time grabbed me by the ass.

Agreed, kid's an ace. My favorite Steely Dan song, always loved that funky guitar. Larry Carlton gets the props in Kid Charlamagne and the guitar work in Reelin' in the Years is iconic, but I always loved this funk tour de force. Anyway, kid nailed it and I agree, I think he's got a shot with the blonde the way she looked at him. I think he's also got a shot with the lead singer if he'd be so inclined, he was also looking at him quite intently. Or maybe it was just sheer admiration and leave it at that.

Hey! I'm the bass player here, I can provide a little update on everyone's whereabouts. I still play bass in a few bands in Philly with members from this tour (the alto Sax player CJ and one of the other drummers named Tristan), there's some live footage of us on my channel. The Bari sax player, Brad Williamson, is a wildly talented bass player who has a pretty large following among the djent and math rock scene, and he even picked up some sponsorships from bass manufacturers for his talents. The two backing singers each have solo ventures as singer songwriters, I believe Ava Panza released an album this year. I haven't kept too much in touch with anyone else, although based on social media presence I think everyone is still out there gigging.

The genius of this song from 1973's "Countdown To Ecstasy" lies in the instrumental steel-cage death match between Jeff "Skunk" Baxter's lead guitar and Jimmie Haskell's brilliant horn arrangement. Guitar savant Connor Low and this incredible all-star horn section prove that point beyond any doubt with their performance here. And huge thanks to the video crew that makes this so much more fun than just playing the Steely Dan recording.

Part of that is due to how the AllStars are organized. These are the best players more than 200 different schools all around the world. They get their setlist a month or so before going on tour, learn their parts individually, then only have two and a half days to rehearse together before it starts. So they pretty much have to go by the original recording or a particular live performance that the the show director has selected.

These kids have been learning music as part of a band in the School of Rock program, some of them starting at eight years old, so they learn to as part of a team. To get to the AllStar level, they mentor and teach younger kids, and if you get get a bunch of ten-year-olds to produce credible music, you can handle anything other musicians can throw at you the rest of your career.

+Robert Hatalla Every year the folks who run the School of Rock's AllStars program pick ~150 of the very best musicians from more than 160 locations around the world. They are assembled into six teams, and they have the full tour experience - getting on the bus, going from town to town, playing clubs and festivals, and getting to play with a group of other equally talented musicians. In January, the various locations will be doing their Winter shows - from 2 to 8 different programs of music devoted to a specific band, artist, genre or event. The kids will vary widely in skill level, but if there is a school in your town (very likely there is) you can contact the Music Director and find out which show is going to have their most skilled musicians. There really is nothing else like a School of Rock show. Every time, I see some kid who has learned to play music that you just would not believe possible, like last season when I saw a 10 year old play a beautiful rendition of "Layla".

And just one last thing - the song says "well I'm never going back to my old school". So if you've been trying to accomplish things in the same old way and you keep failing (and driving everyone else crazy) you must try a new way. A better way. Some people are "rude" boastful, annoying, selfish, impossible, vain, full of them selves, impossible to please and fault finders and unforgiving. THAT'S THE OLD SCHOOL, The old way to learn. Try the new way and if you find your self slipping back into old habits (because we all do that). Sing to your self "well I did not think that I could be so cruel - and I'm never going back to my old school". - that's what the song's about.............. bless you.

Ha! Brilliant - what a whole host of mega talent. And passion to boot. Well done young folks - God bless you - we'll have to keep a watchful eye and ear out for each and everyone of you as you head into your musical careers. To the bass and drums - well done listening out for each other (because that's great talent) so tight and full of Dan FUN. The young guitarists nail their parts - superbly. the horns are crisp and phat and just loose enough to be playful. The lead bloke does a great job of remaining faithful to the original without compromising his own style and gifting (which is always a pleasure to listen to a singer combining both). The keys were great and delightfully touchy and punchy. The two girls on vocals have magnificent voices (you both have distinctive voices but you work at complimenting each other and you did a great job of not overpowering the lead male) - well done doing that because only good and kind hearted and exceptionally talented vocalist can do that (sing from the heart and know your place in each song). I give the whole performance an 8 / 10 very very very good indeed. - no doubt you'll be touring and playing around and having a blast - my only advice is to keep encouraging each other and if you make an idiot of your self apologise as quickly and a honestly as you can (because personal difference come out in the music when you play). Be kind to each other and tell each other how delighted you are to have each other in the band. If you can put everyone else needs before your own because when everyone does that, well that's when the divinity of your musical gifting really shines through. cheers alex i Perth W.Australia :)

About Fagen and Becker's shenanigans during their college days; they attended Bard College. Good job.

Yeah, this is one of the videos I find myself watching over and over again, especially the last minute. The lead guitarist was *15* when he did this!

I know I can't get enough of all this stuff, and you sir do excellent filming these videos I'll bet on a limited budget. keep up the good work, and rock on for sure.

Thank you. I've managed to build a package of equipment and develop techniques so I can get good quality video for a very low price. On these AllStars videos, it was just me, traveling to different locations with a roller bag and a bag with tripods and microphone stands. My wife helps me out for my shows in Chicago.

I can't get over how talented kids can be; far more talented than me. And I so appreciate that you're doing a 45 year old tune, one I've always loved. Kudos to the young pianist, the drummer, all the vocalists, and your incredible lead guitarist. Suggestions: Put a tshirt over the snare (or turn it down just a bit in the console). But on that same console, turn up the mics of the horns.

mudhens4ever The guitarist was 15 at the time and has gotten even better, if you can believe that. The kid playing the bass sax is mainly a bass guitar player - most of these kids play multiple instruments. The weaknesses of the audio mix are my fault. I get a stereo feed from the board, and suppliment it with a pair of microphones which were no more than 15' from the stage in this very small club. So the sound engineer is basically adding elements to the sound coming from the stage, and drums and horns are loud.
