These are so helpful, I don’t know if you realize but your videos are the best in the game when it comes to explaining, showing, and understanding these maneuvers. Thank you so much!

Garry, you do a really wonderful job with these PTS related videos. Great cadence and editing. Great content. No BS. Good things like common errors etc. I havent done these maneuvers for 10+ years but I enjoy reliving them through your great channel. Keep it up sir!

Thanks for all the great content Garry. I just passed my commercial checkride Thursday and your videos definitely helped me get through my training. Keep up the great work!

Demetrius Ingram Congrats on passing the commercial, Demetrius! Like the examiner told me after my checkride, "congratulations; now you're a Commercial pilot, and they'll try to blame everything on you". Be careful out there!

Great video once again sir. I just did my night xc for the commercial req to KPRB. Your concise explainations on the ground and in the air are great. I might even steal some of them for my checkride! Safe flights and blue skies..

More great content Garry: I regularly view your videos before going out to practice - really helps my focus and flying technique. For Steep Spirals, are you using zero (idle) throttle throughout, other than momentary engine clearing on upwind? Are you using any flaps? I hear different things from different folks: wonder if that's all a matter of personal preference, or if it depends on the particular aircraft you're in?
@GarryWing10 жыл бұрын
Yes, power to idle (fixed pitch prop in descent still idles about 1,000 RPM). I'm probably flying this slower than most would; Vbg in C172N is 75KIAS, but that's at MGWT, and I was hundreds less than that; hence I picked 65KIAS. You can hear the stall buzzer a couple times in the video on the steepest banked turns, even though I am still 5-10 kts. above stall. I just wanted the demonstration to be clearly different than Emergency Descent Maneuver, which you can fly with or without flaps and descend at much greater airspeed (Vno, Vne or Vfe depending on configuration).

Can you explain why you lower the pitch during the steepest bank and raise the pitch during shallowest bank to maintain a constant airspeed?

ACS lists STEEP SPIRAL and EMERGENCY DESCENT. They are listed as different maneuvers. Questions to ask yourself. What situation would warrant using a STEEP SPIRAL vs EMERGENCY DESECENT. What are the main differences on how you perform each maneuver?
@PilotJames0253 ай бұрын
Emergency Descent gets you down FAST. Think your engine is on fire and you’re trying to land before you burn up. Steep Spiral you have an engine failure while over your intended landing area, so you don’t want to get away from that point while you descend. In an emergency descent, you typically have max flaps in, and descend at a faster airspeed (top of the white arc). For steep spiral, you pitch for best glide.

I have never had to do the spiral let down. Dangerous maneuver, as it really stresses the airframe if you hit turbulence.Not to mention having a head on with an Eagle!!
@jamesm7649 Жыл бұрын
How does doing a descending turn at best glide speed stress the airframe? You should never pull more than 2 g's during this maneuver
@Nuclearbomb-lw4ri2 ай бұрын
It wont stress the airframe at all if you follow standards, no steeper than 60* and best glide speed.

If getting down quick in a real emergency like fire forget the not slipping.
