Kinda funny to say that to an olympic gold medalist. But yes I concurr. But the absolute best thing about Deb is her attitude. As any skiier knows (assuming they weren’t raised on the mountain), the big challenges are all psychological, not physical. We’ve all had those bad days at the beginning where you get on a run thats a bit too much, you get psyched out, and you fall, over and over. And each time getting up is harder and harder, because it messes with your headspace, it makes you insanely anxious and you start to wonder if Skiing is really worth it or not. Some of us have been with friends who are new to the sport, seeing this happen, feeling guilty that we can’t do more to help. Usually the benefit of an instructor is they can tell you what exactly is going wrong for you, sometimes before you fall. Some are more morally supportive than others. But Deb exudes so much positivity and excitement for what you do, and it’s 100% genuine. If anyone tried to copy her teaching style, they’d sound patronizing and phony. But with Deb you can tell she seems to feel just as stoked watching other people get things as most of us feel when we get things. With Deb around, I can’t imagine ever getting in the wrong headspace while skiing.

An older adult skier like myself (60 yo), knows that you definitely don't want to 'control things by falling' like kids can do! 😆 I love your teaching Deb. I'm going to be hitting the steeps at Lake Louise this next week (along with skiing with my wife on the greens, as she's just getting started). Your tips help my own skiing but also help me as I teach my wife Nina. So excited! Thanks!

Hey, I like to watch your videos . Because u are a wonderful teacher. I do not talk about the contend, which is great too. I m talking about your mindset, the tone of voice, your attitude. You inspire confidence by your positive attitude, always congratulating , encouraging, motivating your students. It must be a privilege and a blessing for kids to have lessons with you because you build their self confidence. You build the basements of the house, so strongly that it will never collapse later. It is really impressive . Thank you for sharing .

This is exactly right - when you get to the harder terrain, steeper slopes and more variable conditions (backcountry for example) you get knocked around a little bit on every single turn. Rhythm and balance is the key to solving all that. Also these kids are excellent, excellent skiers.

The takeaway I got from your Patreon lesson earlier this month with Doug and Jennifer and myself was to challenge ourselves when we get off balance or lose our line. I've accepted that challenge and stopped allowing myself to stop to "pull myself together." I've only been out four times since that lesson, but the mindset shift has been incredibly beneficial. Self-talk, foot to foot, knees to skis, tickle the snowman, and now don't pull an Archie. Those kids are rock stars!

nice video and a good lesson, those kids are amazing. a couple months ago I was explaining to a friend that she should never face plant, whatever happens. a couple days later one of my skis detached in deep snow, I tried to balance it out on one ski but ofcourse failed and faceplanted so bad that I had snow under my goggles haha. unfortunately I hurt my shoulder and a thumb a bit during the fall, tendon injuries, not too bad, it's still not 100% recovered, but almost good now. what I think is important even if you fall badly, is to face your fear in order to overcome it. I went to the same spot where I had fallen two weeks after that and I have to say I was worried. I took it slowly and focused and all have been fine since then. this winter has been amazing :)

"And she wins again." LOL! That was awesome. Yeah, love the idea that getting out of balance is a thrill. If I lose balance I usually just do, well, anything! Just keep moving. I might throw everything down the hill, make a turn, plant a pole, whatever. I just like to keep moving. It's such a strong feeling to get it back - "I got this!"

Great video. I find the first turn in challenging terrain is always the most difficult/ important because it sets your sequence of turns. I think that skiers who are developing their skills in the type of terrain you ski in this video need to be able to practice reading the terrain and be light on their skis to adapt, adjust and go,with the flow. It’s like white water kayaking on skis. Trail riding mountain bikes is also great dry land training.

I'm about a month away from a full month in Colorado. Since 2015 my day totals have dropped from 30 + to 5 or so, to the lockdown. Last April, I managed to make it out to Utah for a few days to find out if I could still ride the proverbial bicycle. Fortunately for me, the combination of frozen corduroy and a pair of GS skis made me feel right at home. I heard myself saying slow down outhouse a few times but on this trip I will hear you in my head. NAM indeed!

I don’t think of it so much as “continuous movement”, but more of “perpetually dynamic”. In skiing, I think there’s more control in being perpetually dynamic. Example: Rounded ‘C’ turns are more dynamic and controlling, rather than a quick pivot with a long traverse. The beginner / intermediate may be afraid of the acceleration forces, but these forces are to be savored while still having better control of velocity.

After almost 40 years on the race trail I would love to sit down with you and give you an interview and talk about the benefits of being involved with ski racing starting at the club level right on up to the top the Olympics in the world championships which have been my grounds for the past 15 years. OK, at 0:47 "you need to have a lack of judgement". Note Deb follows this with "you can't beat yourself up" so it means you cannot judge mistakes too harshly. Although some skiers DO excel in advanced skiing with a total lack of judgement, at least for awhile anyway...😐

You didn't jump over the rock, lol. Loved this video. There were some pretty gnarly terrain. Kudos to those boys for NAM. Question though: I have seen, heard a ton of instruction and at no time do instructors ever emphasize the importance of core strength when it comes to balance. Do the instructors forget because they have been strong for so long that they forget it? For me I found it to make the difference between being able to regain balance and not.

Hi Deb Armstrong I''m getting an epic pass for next season, how can I arrange some lessons from you for the coming season?

I offer very few new private lessons in Steamboat. My schedule is sooooo booked. I do offer, and have had very good luck, with virtual private sessions. This is a link to my Patreon page to sign up for the VIP membership. You can sign up for one month only or consecutive months. I will be ending the $19 option so please do not sign up for that one. Anyway, this is the best option to get a private lesson from me in the future. I will book on snow private lessons with my Patreon members. I hope this answers your question. Take good care and maybe I will meet you on Patreon. Really, it has been a lot of fun with these virtual livestream sessions with individuals. www.patreon.com/DebArmstrong?fan_landing=true

Deb, I need a knee surgeon who will help me keep skiing and teaching. Dr. Richard Steadman retired. Can you tell me the surgeon that the pros are going to now? Thank you. / Marshall

Hi Marshall, have you found a doctor for your surgery? I really don't have a recommendation for you. I am sorry. I hope you are able to keep skiing!!! Keep me posted.

@@DebArmstrongSkiStrong Deb, I appreciate your responding none the less. I did find a surgeon locally. However, my regular orthopedist suggested and gave me 3 injections of platelet rich plasma a few weeks ago. (He's the doctor for the USA Soccer team so he knows about knees.) I'm better so far and will teach this ski season and see how it goes, though I know I'll have some limitations (besides being 72 years old). Happily, my son who's been weekend patrolling for Big Bear Resorts, was hired to teach in Mammoth, so it will be a father son gig now.

When you stop, you can fall into a tree well. The motion is still going and it can take you over.

@@DebArmstrongSkiStrong Managing the risk by stopping and/or falling, can make other things go wrong. Even with managed falls in tight trees, I have lost stuff out of my pockets. Steady pace can win the game.
@DebArmstrongSkiStrong
@DebArmstrongSkiStrong 3 жыл бұрын
@@normalizedaudio2481 Are you understanding that I am teaching NOT to fall to control speed. In fact that is the opposite here. I see it at times that people fall to stop or people just fall because they have lost balance. For the advanced skier I am proposing that they have more tenacity, more grit, more resolve to not fall. To embrace the moment that one becomes out of balance, to work through it and regain balance while in motion. That is the point here. Sure, there are times when legit falls happen. There are also other times when falls could have not occurred. These are the falls that I am talking about for the purposes of this video. Just as the kids ended this video, without falling after falling just the run prior. anyway, just thoughts

Ha ha ha ha. Deb wins. You know how to instruct and motivate those boys. Do you tend to use different motivational techniques when teaching girls? If you have a group of highly motivated, competitive boys and a group of equally motivated competitive girls are instructional techniques the same?

The same. A girl is in this video. The second skier i think. She didn't have the falling issues however. As the video focused more on falling she didn't make the cut. But I coach her the same way. She is 10.
