When these cars sit, the fuel evaporates from the bowl. What you have described is very normal. You can replace your fuel pump with an electric and then it will force priming when you turn the key.

The dodge, I told you a while back, dodges should come with a trailer hitch on each end, you never know if you will be pushing, or pulling it. 😂 I told you this one time, but I’m going to tell you again because I love funny stories. I went fishing with a buddy one time, we went in his dodge, I asked him if he had a newspaper, he asked me if I was going to read the news on the way to the lake, I told him no, I was going to hide my face so nobody would see me in a dodge. Good luck.

If you mix oil in the gas the problem may be solved .. if it doesn't solve that problem it will at least make your truck last longer and run better .. Start with a couple ounces per gallon each time you fuel and go up from there until it starts to smoke then just put a little less in each time .. Probably the two ounces will do the trick .. This truck was not made to run on the new sulphur free dry fuel .. Works very well in old tractors and lawn mowers and diesel engines ... Anything without a O2 sensor should have the oil put in .. Just a suggestion .. I have been doing it for 30 years or so ... and it works ..

The best thing to do with an old carburetor is to invest in a new one. You develop vacuum leaks around the shafts over time and other things that can't be fixed with a carb kit. Also, when you have a vehicle, you don't use much. Always add some Stable to the gas to keep it from turning to varnish.

As an automotive technician, I would be checking for air leaking into the system at the gaskets of the carburetor, the intake and the fuel back to the fuel pump. This will cause the gas to dry up. When dry the system will suck air and chuck would not be enough to suck gas past the needle and seat. That tell me that leaking is after the fuel pump. To find it; spray start fluid as someone crank the engine. The engine may start up. Or get engine running at an idle, then spray as before. The RPM will go up.. that were the air leak is.

Hey Tyler, what you should do is put a clear fuel filter right before the carburetor so you know you’re getting gas up to it. Also, Textron by Chevron fuel additive is great to pour down the throat of the carburetor while you throttle up by hand. This should clear out anything in your carburetor, good luck keep up the great work.

Couple things, The old Dodge was just tired from doing all those pasture burnouts and needed a little rest!!.. I would look for a leak in the supply line to the carburetor...that is likely where you are loosing your prime....given the trucks age....LOL Great to have the steer data, I don't thing your cohort is to small. You will have long range data given the way you have designed your study and this really is just a pilot study!! Great job, glad you Dad was around!!

Tyler, if you haven’t already, you should make up an excel spreadsheet and import your data. You can segregate by year and accrue each year’s data. You can even setup charts to graph and visualize your data. You can even create an aggregate calculation to add data from all years to increase your sample size.

I would use a crowding gate/panel on the steers to keep giving them less and less pen area so they go into the trailer. If they have the whole open pen they give you that look like they want to turn back towards you which could be dangerous.

Good day Tyler. Because of my particular interests and experiences in life, your channel has become my favorite, hands down. I relate to your way of life so closely, that you're a regular source of inspiration for me. You are a multi-talented young man, and I like to see myself as similar. You're doing an awesome job with your ranch and the progress you've made since going full-time is impressive. Question, if you have time. Those steers finished out very nicely. And all on grass plus your local hay. I was curious about their age compared to a lot-fed steer at this weight. I assume these guys are 24 months +/-? If memory serves me correctly, lot-fed steers reach choice/ prime condition at about 18 months +/-? So only 6 months longer for a much healthier animal to achieve finished weight.? If you have time to verify, or correct me, I'd be grateful! All the best to ya Tyler. Strong work friend. You're doing great things.

FTR, on your Dodge truck I noticed that the choke was wide open on the carburetor. If the engine is cold, then that choke should have been closed. You should be able to operate the throttle, look down into the primaries and see if any fuel is squirting in. If no fuel is squirting each time you pump the throttle, then the float bowl is empty. If fuel IS squirting, then you need to make sure that choke closes when cold.

Is the choke working? Remove the air filter. Look at the carburetor and see if the choke flapper is open or closed. Depress the gas pedal one time. Now go look at the carb to see if the flapper has moved to the closed position. If not this will require the engine to crank for a long time. To adjust the choke….well look on KZbin for your truck on adjusting the choke. 😎

The fuel is evaporating from the Carburetor, That's an Edelbrock and it has some big vents in the air horn. I've had this issue on most carbureted vehicles with fuel nowadays especially if it's got moonshine (ethanol) in it. You can put an Electric fuel pump that will prime the system when the ignition is on. Bypass the mechanical pump or you can remove it and install a cover in its place. ASE Master Certified Technician w/50 yrs experience oh and I got a few old hoopties with that same carb on em.

it sounds like the accelerator pump is leaking in the carburetor...buy a carb rebuild kit and rebuild it your self,,,, being real careful not to loose the tiny steel balls that are check valves that will fall out when you turn the carb over. there are a hundred passageways in that carb it's a nightmare but they do work ! the check valves get stuck and allow the fuel to just drip out when the thing sets.... rebuild the carb.... install an electric fuel pump and put it on a seperate switch on the dash this will allow turning on the fuel pump before you start the engine so you know you have fuel....doing a major electrical tune-up on it probably wouldn't hurt and check the timing i found that changing the timing just a little bit really helped on starting... these 1970's trucks are quirky find what it likes and stick with it and change the oil to valvoline 20w60 and it should keep going for a long time the thicker oil ( 40wt) if you prefer is a must in my book.... this ain't a e.f.i. engine and has loose tolerances it needs thicker oil !
