In this video i show an idea for homemade steering!
heres the first real test! • homemade boat window u...
Using the power of water, hynautic hydraulic steering is easy to put in any homemade plywood mini boat. Cable steering is good but i need to have the steering counsel be moveable and more reliable than electric servo steering.this is a minn kota trolling motor.

I'm not sure if you've thought about it or not, but a non-toxic alternative to water that's a bit more dense occurred to me. Vegetable oil. I don't know if it would work or not but it's a thought.

The one problem is that with these motors, there is alot of back and forth and eventually air bubbles started forming. But the concept is solid!

Pretty cool. I wonder if you used dawn soap instead of water if it would free it up a little depending if the issue is the rubber seals or the pressure itself. I like the steering videos.

I just watched a couple of vids reviewing the bixby steering kit for trolling motors. It makes me think of pull starts for weed whackers. I bet with your genious, you could convert a pull start to a mini steering system like a bixby knock off.

Didn't have any luck with the fish tape/rod for mine. Too much play inside the tube and the pvc tube itself flexed too much. Any updates on best for regular use and ease of install and durability?
@americanboathead5390
@americanboathead5390 4 жыл бұрын
The trick is to get small as possible tube and secure it well especially at both ends. My personal favorite is a lever with a fish rod straight shot back to the motor. There is almost no play whatsoever, its simple and effective. Second would be rope and pull not as simple but very reliable and easy to adjust to amountbof steering input desired. The metal fish tape with steering wheel is ok but finicky and more play. Syringes was not reliable enough whatsoever lol

Those surgical syringes will work for now but will rupture under stress. I'd suggest using copper pipe with fittings as it will hold up better. I actually know of someone who did that a long time ago for a trolling motor, only done with fuel lines and actual hydraulic fluid, etc. I'd add a pivot to each one with that way you can use the large one on the motor end and the small one on the steering wheel end without having the plungers go sideways. I found out from my grade school days if you try to lift stuff with syringes, it ends up rupturing the case before the tube can pop off.
@americanboathead5390
@americanboathead5390 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip! I just figured since its not a rudder, the motor actually turns quite easily and so far it works great! I wonder how i could attach copper pipe to a syringe or what else i could use that would not cost alot.. maybe i could double the sytem to pull and push at the same time.. but there again, after testing, no problems... yet.. lol we'll see i recon!

@@travis4798 now that you mention it, that is a real possibilty! I dont know how i miss things like that! Theres quite a bit of seaweed later in the summer or ragweed not sure.. thanks for the tip! Love the steering setup. Thanks for sharing! I wonder if it may be a little more responsive if you used some type of oil or perhaps brake fluid? Something with a bit more density but also wouldn't be corrosive to the plunger?

Yes there is! All you have to do is turn the speed to full forward and use a controller of any kind between the battery and the motor. It could be a on/off switch or a variable knob (pwm).

I wonder if you could use something like the all thread from a large "C" clamp where it mounts with a ball like pivot to the clamp plate so that you can avoid the plunger thread taking too much flex and letting air in, just a thought. Love your DIY work, keep it up!

I like that a lot because it is cheap. i think if you put a crosshead on like an early steam engine. it would solve a lot of problems it would keep the piston centered,slides would only need to be made of wood, if you dont mind spending more money adapt two motorcycle rear brake systems by connecting their master cylinders together, very tough works with real brake fluid,and has a facility for bleeding. probably a bit heavy duty for this app

200iq. Like the water idea. Can be useful for other things as well. move up and down a hidden mooring. Maybe work together with a linear servo: I myself are experiencing with steering by using RC servo (winch) for 360 degree steering. Same For throttle. I want my electric boat to be able to by controlled remotely. And only using small switches (Servo tester). Im also testing out 3s lipo batteries. Do you plan on doing that?
@americanboathead5390
@americanboathead5390 5 жыл бұрын
Yes! I am worried that the lipo battery could get wet and explode! But seriously, i am not good with electrical stuff so its hard for me to trust it. If you look at my video "glass bottom mini boat test #2" you can see what i came up with!! Id love to see what you comebup with as well!

@@americanboathead5390 in my first boat design, the part of the boat that I was supposed to sit in was separate from the the motor and electronics, with the ability to quickly separate it from myself in case of fire (lipo burns nice when it catch fire). But after research, I believe that if you operate with good margins, the batteries will do fine. Like going for dobble C rating that you really need. I also would like to have a power bank that can be used for different things (example camping). My 6 weeks away from my job just started, so I migth be able to document my summer projects. Your projects has helped me. Maybe some of mine can help you and others. Keep posting videos!!
