brandon.. thanks for another great video! Just in case anyone out there is interested, I discovered standard steel gas line ( I think 3/4 in) works perfectly for fabricating that 2nd tilt tube system. I had to ream out the inside, and weld tabs to bolt it to the transom... but it is basically the same as the one you used. it is steel, so I expect more maintenance will be needed, but it got my boat in the water!

@@BrandonsGarage I just found your video. And just noticed you added links. I will check them out. The second option in your video might be great for what i am doing. Her is what i am attempting. I will be running two 30 hp motors on my 16.5 alumicraft. I have been told to get the motors as close to possible. But the steering rod will keep them at least 8 inches apart. I have the room but the steering cable will need some finagling. Which I would like to avoid by getting the motors closer together. I was thinking of doing something different with the steering cable but cant picture in my mind a bracket that would be needed. Any ideas?

A few years ago I was looking for a bracket like the second one in the video. Couldn't fine one so I bought a used tilt tube off eBay and got some channel iron and some 1 inch u bolts. I used the 3 u bolts and fastened the tube to the channel and then drilled holes in the channel and bolted it to the inside of the transom. Had to fabricate a linkage to fasten the cable to the motor. I used a lawnmower steering linkage with the tie rod ends. I had to make the linkage twice before I got it so when I tilted the motor it wouldn't bind up. Worked real well. Sold the boat about a year ago. Got another boat recently. Gonna have to do the same thing again. I'm putting an old 33 HP Johnson on an 18 foot flat bottom boat.

Hey Brandon. This video is clutch! I'm working on installing a stick steering setup on a jon boat. I've got a 78 Johnson 25 hp. I've pretty much rebuilt the motor but now I've got to figure out how to install steering. I've got what looks to be a flex cable and a throttle setup. I could use some direction on what comes next. I've looked into a tilt tube and control arm setup. Some come with mounts that look like may work. Just not sure what else I need. Other than the stick itself. I would love to pick your brain if you have time.

I have all the pieces on my old boat. That boat had a older 50hp merc, “new” boat has a ‘66 18hp fastwin. Edit: it’s not working, it’s all hooked up and does turn the motor, but it doesn’t turn far enough, I’ve tried so many hookup configurations, moving attachment locations on both motor and transom. Do different brands have different “throws”, is merc steering kit proprietary to merc engines? Does my tube need to be way off to the side? I have been trying to mount it more centered, maybe I should try as far to the shifting side as I can get it and have the linkage as an extension rather than doubling back on itself? I’m no engineer, and it’s been 100+ degrees fro days now, so I’m started to get frustrated with this seemingly easy project.... any advice you can offer would be very much appreciated, subscribing for you too.

Just found a company(T&R Marine) that makes those Transom style tube assy.Comes in kit with the arm but only for 1977 and newer it said.The arm is what may not work for older models,but the transom piece should.

I just looked for it, says it has an offset, and the photo shows it sticking way off of the motor. Seems like it does the same thing as the first tube bracket, but much more complicated.
@BrandonsGarage5 жыл бұрын
they also list one on their amazon store, www.amazon.com/T-R-Marine-Front-Steering/dp/B00A8O8HT4 I'm no expert, but it looks like the arm would bind up, as the engine doesn't rotate perfectly flat. ...for $225 I don't want to give it a try, Maybe I'll buy a metal bender and copy the arm I have.

iLike the second version better. Ez Glide makes the second bracket you show but it only looks like it is made where the cable attaches from the Port side. Which most boats steer from starboard side so that's no help. I think it's for those stick steer types where they put that on the left?

For the Ezyglide plate the descriptions says it is only for steering entering from the port side. However it looks like you have it entering from the Starboard side. Is the Mounting tube able to be reversed? I need to have it enter from the Starboard side like you did in the video.

I set up with a bracket like your first option and a second hand teleflex safe t system and it is steering in reverse (turn right prop goes right). It’s the old style teleflex with a pin on the cable side side and a big plastic locking nut in the excess side. Any idea how to reverse the direction? It seems easy on the safe t 2.

It should be how the cable enters the rotary helm. Remove cable, and reinstall on opposite hole.

On the second option, with the steering tube underneath and in the motor mount bolts, after it was done you said you have full range of motion, but you didn’t, you had full range for right turns and when you turned all the way to the left the motor was straight. This is the same problem I am having...if I center the tube I get a little turn each way, if I offset the tube I get a more turn one way and less the other, depending which side I offset too. My brain hurts :(

make it out of 1/2 inch pipe pipe clamps and aluminum plate you will have to drill the ends of pipe a bit for the rod end of cable to slide threw nice its a snug fit at first
