Just finished the job. Took me 2 hours and I'm no master mechanic. Had a little help in removing the lower bolt. Discovered that if you slide a little further toward the rear of the car while underneath it,, the lower bolt magically appears and access is easier. Could not have done it without your video. Many thanks.

Just changed mine on my 2010 Ford Escape. I had difficulty in knocking the steering shaft up out of the old part and then down into the new part. But I eventually got it out and a new one in. On the old part, I tapped a screw driver into the slot. That helped a lot. Thanks for the video. It was very helpful. My Escape feels much tighter now and safer!

THANKS FOR THE VIDEO!!!!!! Had a high pitched squeak that seemed like the air bag clock spring. Checked mine and one of the u-joints was bad. I would recommend opening the tabs with a screwdriver to help remove the steering shaft. I also noticed your locking tabs in the white trim piece broke just like mine, I used a little caulk to reseal the piece. Ford also recommends a little grease on the 2 hard plastic rings where the shaft travels through the 2 rubber pieces. I used dielectric grease.

Excellent video! 2008 Escape 152000 miles. Replaced mine today, along with the non-grease able outer tie rod ends which can also be an additional source of clunking noise when badly worn. They squeak when all the grease is gone and are just starting to wear. I will add that the entire job can be done in less than an hour from underneath the vehicle, without removing the boot. Depending on your skill and comfort level. I spent nearly 40 years working on commercial jets, often replacing parts in tight quarters mostly by feel or using mirrors.

So that is my concern and experience, but I do ask if The person saying it took them for hours actually had the same tools like the extension rods or was trying to get to the bolt differently? It's helpful to know if they still had trouble, even with the swivel extensions.
@moviestudioland

One comment - the Steering coupler has a slightly smaller square hole for the steering rack side. So I had the steering coupler installed upside down. Another helpful hint - I used a large screw driver to OPEN the joints to allow easier install of the steering linkages from the steering wheel and onto the steering rack. The bolts will bend the steering coupler back into place when tightened.

This video is as everyone has commented and appreciated. I am in the middle of the repair and would like to share so as to be of benefit to others. In regards to the rubber boots, if you look at Angel carefully you will see that the top boot does not have a flange. The flange is on the bottom boot. These boots do not come off that easily. I uses a plastic pry tool to get under the lip of the top boot.. To get the bottom, flanged boot off I used a pair of pliers. I pulled very carefully on the white plastic with a steady even pressure (no jerking). I made the mistake of removing the shaft from the top of the coupling before loosening the bottom bolt and when I went to loosen the bottom bolt the bottom shaft turned so that I could not get a good grip on it. I had to put the shaft back into the top of the coupling in order to loosen the bottom bolt. I reasoned wrongly that the coupling would come off the bottom shaft while I was taking the shaft off the top of the coupling if I took the bottom bolt our first. In order to get the coupling off the bottom shaft, I had to wedge and hammer a small screw driver in the coupling to make it loose enough to pry off. I bought a cheap coupling on ebay and had to return it because the bolt threads interferred with the shaft when trying to install if. As I mentioned above, I am in the middle of the job now waiting for my new coupling from Ford, but I believe it will be down hill from here, fingers crossed. Good luck to all starting on this project.

On my 08 Escape FWD I had a different boot. It is the one used in the 2009 and you dont have to pry anything off. Just 3 number 10 screws. I mention this as it had confused me as no other videos show this.

@@morinjohn6647 I went to the nearest junkyard, and replaced the steering column. The sensor costs more than a used steering column. If you look around, you can find a 2008 to 2012 Ford escape steering column with the electric motor, installed for about $100. There are a few how-to videos on it on KZbin. I have had to do this twice on two different escapes it's not that difficult. Worst part of it is you have to buy a special big star head bit.

I’m facing the same problem already change the u joint and nothing did you solve the problem?

Important detail you might want to note is that the u-joint only fits one way. The holes at each end of have a slight difference in sizing. There is no way for you to get it back together if you try to put it back on the wrong way. Just a helpful hint, from someone who had to do this replacement.

So is there any markings or is it obvious when you know what you're looking for, that one side is smaller.?

I recently have encountered this very problem. Its looks pretty simple to replace. I've heard that you should tie off the steering wheel to one side before you remove the coupler to not throw off the balance of the steering, but it looks as if it wasn't even an issue with this repair?? That's really my only concern before I attempt to replace it on my own.

Fix it Angel, Thanks for posting this video. My wife's Mariner seems to have this issue. I have a couple questions. 1. Do you see any problem with third party parts on this job? I found it on amazon from $30-45, and on ebay(new for around $35). 2. Does this seem like a part that might be in danger of breaking, or is it just annoying because of the bushings being worn? I wouldn't mind waiting until it warms up a bit, but I don't want to put us in danger. thanks!

Brian Davis Hi, thank you for watching my video. It’s better to use factory parts since the aftermarket parts are made with cheaper materials. I suggest to replace it immediately, you never know what will happen because that part can break if you do a fast hard turn. Good luck brother
