My Big Fat Greek Wedding movie commentary reaction
My Big Fat Greek Wedding is a charming and fun movie that we loved making a commentary for. It does a great job of showing the struggles of a woman, played by Nia Vardalos, trying to find her own identity and marry the man she loves without sacrificing her culture and heritage.

I really appreciate that Toula's "makeover" scene is really something done in service of her own happiness rather than to fit an image, impress a man, etc. It's a transformation that's intrinsically tied to her confidence as she breaks new ground in her education, career, and self-worth. It's just so wholesome.

I was the maid of honor at a greek wedding two months ago. I'm NOT greek. I also don't speak greek. I had absolutely no idea what was happening the entire day, but I got three entire bags full of presents - golden necklaces, rings, the works. People congratulated ME on the wedding. I'm still trying to figure out what was going on there.

yeah, in greek weddings you don't have a maid of honour and one best man. You usually have 1 or 2 people that (regardless of gender, though sometimes a couple) have the role. Because you give the rings and you switch the wreaths you are part of the wedding in a more involved manner than in an american one. I'm not sure if you can have a wedding without a maid of honour, but you can't have a wedding without a koumparo/a as far as I know. They also have to sign on the wedding papers and stuff. Literally we say that the koumparos marries the couple. That's why you were congratulated. It's a very important role. So much, that if you marry a couple then you become the godparent of their child if the couple follows tradition.

Yes, being an introvert gives an entire spin on this is potentially nightmarish to handle. That said, what I saw within the film is that, for a number of reasons, Toula is more introverted than most of her family, and Ian is more extroverted than his parents. The Miller parents are more reserved, but not very conservative. Gus is far less reserved, and more conservative. A bunch of juxtaposition going on.

My husband and I have been married 17 years and she still doesn’t fully accept that I am perfectly happy eating “just sides” for dinner. I showed it to him and his family last year. It was hilarious. They loved it, and related so much to their parents behaviour. As someone who is not close to their family, like Ian, I adore the craziness and love a big family gives you. Their warmth towards me is amazing. 23:26 I dated a guy that blew me away with this one. He said, “I only have two cousins.” And I say, “Oh, in this state?” And he said, “No. I only have two cousins.” And I did not know up until that point that was feasible. When I saw this scene with my sister I said, “27, so? Don’t we have like 50?” She laughed at first and said no but then did the math out loud, “We have 11 aunts and uncles on our mom’s side, on average each had five kids. So 11 times 5 is-OMG we have like 50 cousins!” We later met up with our mom and asked her to confirm the amount and she said, “Oh you two are ridiculous! You have much more than that!” I have 78 first cousins and something like 163 second cousins. We’re racially and culturally black, of African, Irish, and South Eastern and Western Asian heritage, and religiously Catholic, Muslim, and Baptist. I’m related to a sizable area of the Midwest including Chicago. I’m not any amount Greek but as a cultural Roman Catholic who’s asked why I’m not married once a month at Mass, I 100% relate to this film.

I forgot how much I love this movie. I relate so much to Toula especially as I get older. It's inspiring to see someone break out of the mold at any age. It's also nice to have characters like this who serve as a gentle reminder that we all come into our own at our own pace, that there is no timetable on happiness, but you can't just sit around and wait for things to come to you. Sometimes you have to show up for the universe in order for the universe to show up for you (i.e. putting yourself out there, making moves to get closer to your goals/dreams, etc). I also kind of love how as much of the movie is about the comedy around joining two families together, the love story is kind of secondary. It's more about Toula discovering what she wants out of life than it is about the "love story". It's the rarest of rom-coms, one in which the romance is almost a secondary character and not really the point. I love that the most.

My parents worked hard to make sure I fit in as an american girl, but there were still obvious differences. It was cool to see Stef relate to it also😀and awesome to see Sam have a laugh in moments too😊

I love this movie, and Ian and Toula's relationship is the best part. They made a mediocre TV show based on it, though the follow up sequel is thankfully better.

I am sorry, but I really, really enjoyed all the "What!?", "WTF?", and 🤔 moments Sam had in this movie. This film is very funny, sweet, and heartwarming so I like rewatching. The overbearing immigrant family trope is pretty common, but I think they found a balance that works where it does not make you dislike the family.

One of my high school teachers was marrying into a Greek family, and his side was so into planning everything that she felt she didn’t have anything to do with her own wedding. They went on a trip the week before the date where she vented about this, to which he said, “Why don’t we just get married?” They eloped, but still went through the ceremony the week later, not telling ANYONE. That way, no pressure!

man let me tell you, as a second generation Canadian, my Dutch side of the family is almost as intense as the Portokalos family. My dad is considered the black sheep of his siblings because he married a girl with Scottish/English heritage. and me and my older sister are the weird ones out of my 35 cousins because we're still not married and in our thirties, god forbid we're not married with 3 kids by the age of 23. immigrant families absolutely are more traditional than people back in 'the old country'. Still love my grandpa though, sweetest 91 year old ever :3

The thing i always find funny about the restaurant name is that zorba means overbearing/bully in Turkish and probably in Greek too. We share many words foods and culture with Greeks of course ( to the point of fighting over which food is from which cuisine etc.) 😅

I witnessed a near identical "don't eat meat/lamb" convo in Crete Greece when I studied abroad. One of the students I went with was vegetarian and the cook came out to greet the international students at a restaurant and just didn't understand. I had to try so hard not to laugh. Same when I worked at a Greek restaurant and they had a sht ton of Windex and blue and white decor everywhere. There was even a pic of the owner's son wearing the restaurant shirt at the Acropolis

That’s really interesting what you said about her dad having to vet the guy before she dates him, because it made me think that if her dad DID vet the guy and he turned out not to be respectful to Toula, if she came to him like, “Dad he’s ab*sive” or whatever he’d probably be like, “No Toula, he is good boy!” 37:15 “May Yamo Peggy Hill!”

Ahh, I’m so happy. This is one of my favorite movies. Definitely a comfort film of mine. Even as someone from a completely different culture, a lot of aspects of being the daughter of very strict & traditional immigrant parents were familiar. Like when Toula worked up a whole proposal for her dad to angle something she wanted as benefiting him/the family to raise the chances of a positive response - definitely felt that. The tirade her dad has after they get engaged, I could have sworn it was my dad just based off the dialogue lol
