You're a wonderful teacher Stefan! Just a few points...as a wildlife artist, cadmium red is often found in birds and flowers. It will mix with cerulean blue to create the loveliest muted violets often found in a landscape. I can't do without it! A lemon yellow is essential to create bright greens. You'll never get a bright green if you mix cadmium yellow with cobalt blue, as neither colour "carries" green. I'm a firm believer in the split primary system. Alizarin is a wonderful blue-based red, but it's a fugitive colour (in watercolour, maybe not oils?). Cheers. 😊😊😊

Love this! Use to have a box with all kinds of colored paint tubes. Tried just using the primary colors. Unbelievable experience! I am free! They are the only colors I use now. French Ultramarine, Cadmium Red Medium, Titanium White and Cadmium Yellow. Well I do slip in 1 or 2 others like Indian Yellow for glazing purposes. It was like opening a treasure chest! The fear of, how in the world did I make that color in the first place? No longer comes into question. I took a painting I had start years ago and made the exact colors I had started with at that time. Couldn't believe it! All those colored tubes are now stored in a box and I just don't think about them. I am filled with joy, released from color fear and what in the world will I create in the future seem limitless. Thank you for a wonderful video!

Never too old to learn....This lecture should be a pre-requisite for any beginning oil painting class in any school or university. There is so much basic information regarding materials offered here (brushes, paints, canvasses, solvents, etc.) that people are normally forced to learn by trial and error. Knowing this information and having it available from the outset, would do a lot to bypass all the wasted time, energy (and most of all) money that aspiring artists are forced to sacrifice at the start. There are much more important things to consider in doing art without struggling with poor quality or unnecessary or ill-manageable materials. Subject-matter, composition, color mixing, values...the creative process is undermined by not knowing the basics. Thanks for a great video.

I just paint. I'm not professional., went to school but not to paint. Anyway, I tried to mix the primary colors and I cannot believe it, I created black color. It's amazing. It's like magic. How can red, yellow and blue create black. You are amazing. Thanks.
@francesnorton652 жыл бұрын
The primaries create black because the pigments are all absorbing the light from each other on a microscopic level. With so much absorption happening, not much is left to bounce back to your eyes, hence the appearance of black.

I see lots of comments of people disturbed by the woman talking in the background; she bothered me too. But I found that if I moved back from my monitor a bit, and with my hand closed one ear, I could still hear Stefan but the background noise faded from my hearing. I was then able to comfortably watch the entire video and focus on the lecture without getting really angry. To Stefan, I would recommend that, when filming a lecture like this, that someone monitor the camera to make sure you are centered in the frame. There was one point in this video when you shifted left and nearly disappeared from view altogether.

Stefan Baumann Stephan, I did not go to art school. I have been a photographer since 1970 and dabbled in painting. Now, I am getting serious about painting, and the more "art lessons" I watch on You Tube the more inhibited I become. Like everyone else, I have a vision in my mind's eye of the way a thing should look. It's not the way my eye sees it, so painting it realistically is counter to it. It's the way I hope and wish that it would look. That's what I am going for, and doing much better since I watched your vids. Thanks!

I´ve read a lot from serious sources that Zinc White is the worst decision you can make when using whites, for it eventually will fall apart taking away with it the colors it was mixed with. Excuse if I can´t explain well, English is not my first languaje, but as I understand, Zinc W separates and falls as paint flakes. On the other hand I love your videos, really very instructive. And love the way you explaing things.

I am having an aversion to turps and wonder about the water based oils.....and about oil...linseed is a mystery still, I read the label which states it can spontaneously combust....yesterday I watched a video yesterday where a young N.Z. artist mentioned walnut oil once or twice...do you have video's which address these questions? I need to know everything from the beginning.....I am greedy I know, but I am very grateful to you for your videos as well as a couple of other artists who have posted instructional videos on youtube for free....but your's have a lot more love of the whole process and I am really looking at buying more expensive brushes and canvas and better paints as a treat to me.....I talk too much, except when I'm drawing and trying to paint....thank you for sharing the passion!

I recently had a struggle with a painting I was working on. I lately have been trying to work with only the 3 primaries and white. So I was trying to mix a color like dioxazine purple. But with my red and my blue, i was only getting really dull, dark purples. Which would be great, but I was going for a lighter, more vibrant purple at that time. My assumption was that my issue was the colors I had leaned too much to the warm side. So with that, what exact colors would you suggest to use for your primaries? For example, if I'm trying to work with a limited, 3 color palette, should I use a lemon yellow, ultramarine blue, cad red light, or cad yellow, cobalt blue, alizarin crimson? How do you know what the best colors are just to have the basic, well rounded primaries that you can use to make both dull and bright colors? Sorry if this doesn't make a ton of sense, but it REALLY frustrated me.
@SwirlOfColors9 жыл бұрын
Dave Ricin You will get best purple with mixing ultramarine blue (PB29) and magenta (PR122) or quinacridone rose/violet (PV19), note that some manufacturers use as 'brand' name magenta but still use pigment PV19. The biggest downfall of pirmary palette is that secondary colors will get really dull, so you have to adjust. It's okay to enchance your pallete accordingly to colors you care about.
@StefanBaumann9 жыл бұрын
Dave Ricin Use Steven QUiller wheel he made it easy to understand
@francesnorton652 жыл бұрын
You need 6 primaries, not 3. Michael Wilcox's book "Blue and yellow don't make green" was an absolute lifesaver for me. (To create a clear violet, your blue and red must both carry violet. Ultramarine blue mixed with quinacridone red will do the trick!)

Hi, came across your videos and absolutely love them. Very informative and helpful as a new artist. I watched your video on pricing and realized it was 6 to 7 years old. Does the $2.00 per inch rule still hold? Or has it risen with inflation?

I love listening to you teach. You are excellent. There is someone in the class that is talking constantly and it is very hard to hear you over them. Please tell the students not to talk while you are talking. Thank YOU for your excellent teaching.

Reading through the comments, it seems to me that there are lots of objections to the 'background' voice noise. Yep, initially, it was distracting, BUT, do as you aught to be doing when painting, give it a 110% concentration, FOCUS in on the TUTOR and listen to what he has to say ! Could also be an element in there, from the complainants, that they are maybe a little frightened, that they may be 'missing something' in the 'gossip mode'! A Great Informative Lecture. Thank you. Peace

This is nice, rather than a 'tutorial' or a 'demonstration', I feel like I'm back in class, and also you're a likeable instructor. I do miss the class environment. Your workshop in Medford, Or are right where my sister lives. It gives me ideas to visit her and attend one. All I need is the money :)

Now he hates Alizirin Crimson and says throw it away if you have it! It's just so interesting how we all evolve in our knowledge and thinking. I saw a very recent video and it talks about color temperature. It was on youtube but had been from one of his patreon classes I think. I was so inspired by it, so today I started to listen to this one, but I think I will first stick with his more recent stuff.

Love Stefan's teachings so much, I could listen to him all day. Shame about the $60 brushes though that in this day and age, animals have to be killed for Art. Technology is advancing so much these days that synthetic brushes can imitate the real thing if more people demand it.

I won't buy animal hair brushes. If you have ever seen an animal skinned alive for it's fur, I doubt that many people would

Does this all apply to abstracts painting or would the rules change a bit? Thank you so much for your awesome videos.
