The paintings of Stefan Baumann reveal the true spirit of nature by transporting the viewer to distant lands that have gone unseen and undisturbed. With the huge success of Baumann’s weekly PBS television series “The Grand View: America’s National Parks through the Eyes of an Artist,” millions of people witness for themselves the magic Stefan portrays on canvas, his passion for nature and the American landscape. By distilling his love of nature into a luminous painting of brilliant, saturated color that transcends conventional landscape and wildlife art, Baumann has captured the hearts and imaginations of a generation. Each painting becomes an experience rather than merely a picture - a vivid manifestation of his special and personal union with nature and the outdoor world. Through his mastery of light, color and artful composition, Baumann invites you to experience nature in its purity. It is no wonder that for many years distinguished American collectors, including former presidents and financial icons, have sought out his work.

I learned about colors the warm and cool by Owen Gromme. I was about 11 years old, he had been painting for sometime by then, but learned later to get that light he wanted to bring out his subject, because for sometime he had been doing Illustrative work. I learned more from him than the education I was getting in school. I still have a few tubes of paint he gave me. But my mom did not want me to waste time on art. Thank you. I have plenty of Acrylics, so I use them as an under coat, and will use the oils as an over coat , I am NOT by any means wealthy. My heat is 50 in winter mainly to keep pipes from freezing, my hot water is on vacation. Stove and refrigerator too costly to use. And too old to waste time, so I paint with what I have at the moment

I just got finished with my BFA in painting. It was such a major let down that political ideology has taken the place of having any type of technique which has completely taken over the university’s. I could not believe what laziness and sloppiness passes for great taste. How do I reconcile that I feel like I’ve just wasted 3-4 years ?

Alizarin crimson is a synthetic of madder lake. I find your assessment of it's usefulness far too narrow. If you look at Van Gogh (The Bedroom), Edward Munch( Anxiety) Frida Kahlo. they will have used a red color achieved by muting hues similar to Alizarin C. Furthermore I find it's cool temperature, transparency, and tinting strength are all key factors in it's use, and as mentioned, can create beautiful muted mixtures of color.

Temperature is a useful tool. I manipulate it every day in my work as a photographer. I can think of a few ways to use Photoshop to analyse the warmth or coolness of colours, but the brain works faster once you know what you’re looking for. I’m not sure I agree that printers ink can be as vibrant as anything a painter can produce. The computer screen can come closer. Of course, print is CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow & black) and our screens work with RGB (red, green blue), a much richer color space. RGB is closer to the way we see. I’ve tried using CMYK in painting. About 20 years ago I was into acrylics for life classes. Oils weren’t an option because the venue wouldn’t allow solvents. Sometimes I’d use soft pastels, but had to take them outside to apply fixative. (A2 was my usual size, and these were happening in the evening in winter.) Anyway, for a couple of months I limited my palette to CMYK. I could get a decent vibrancy if I used the colours almost like watercolour - without white. The interaction between colors was a bit lacklustre, and I loved mixing highlights so I went back to my usual colors.

At a low time for me in this past year, Stefan, I found myself back to painting. I am giving you credit in helping lift me out of a dark place. Not only that, but your enthusiasm and positive outlook on life is pushing me beyond my negativity I'm held onto for too long. I am a Native living in Oregon, embracing being an artist rejoining my journey, even learning drawing. I now want to learn it all and experiment it all. I hope to one day take one of your and hope to make it to one of your workshops and/or classes one day. Particularly in Medford, as my heritage is of the Shasta Costa Natives and I have never been to my ancestors homeland in my 47 years (near grant pass/rogue river). If I could use my grant funding for education to get up at 6am to paint every day in apprenticeship, I absolutely would take the opportunity. You have given me new life and feel good about taking this journey. Thank you.

Well Well. That was illuminating! I'm currently working on dappled light in a park on a sunny day. I notice when I add pure lemon yellow to the highlight and viridian green to shadows the painting comes alive.

So ultramarine and cobalt blue are "warm" and magenta is "cool"? I still don't get it. What makes a color "warm "is how shifted towards red it is and "cool" how shifted to blue it is. What I think you're really talking about is chroma shifts, not temperature. Take the orange example. The difference between tube orange and mixed orange is brightness/chroma. When you mix two colors, the resulting mixture is lower in chroma. You seem to be talking about chroma, but using the language of temperature and this is causing you to use "warm" and "cool" in unconventional ways. This is confusing. In all the examples you discuss in the video, I think it would be much clearer to talk in terms of chroma. However, this is just my opinion. I am no expert.

Yes I agree, You are NOT an Expert! I am, so instead of trying to fight what I say , try thinking about what I said. After 40 years of teaching thousands of students I would maybe listen to someone that has a lot more experience than you have.

I agree sir was just talked about colour intensity by mixing two tube colours. Otherwise what I could understand is perhaps dull orange will also shift position on colour wheel, so cool instead.
