This, here, is brilliant marketing. This is the fourth video of yours that I've watched. From minute one, there are glimmers of humor and tricks of the trade. I particularly appreciate the lighting tests in the last 8-minutes. I am sorry that I never caught the PBS series, but you're a wonderful teacher. Thanks for sharing on KZbin.

I`m at the beginning of painting, and I love doing it. What I`ve taken from this lecture is to find my niche. I`m most comfortable with people and now I feel I need to focus, instead of my mind being all over when I`m just learning. Selling any of mine would be a miracle right now, but It's good to know my path. Thank you.

So spot on! I always love the insight into the business side of art. I think too often we worry about being "original" and appealing to other artists. My best selling subject matter? Cat and dog portraits.

Great advice. Focusing on a specific genre is a great idea. Overtime you get better at painting that genre and end up adding personal meaning to your work. You get identified with that genre and it becomes your personality. I know my own forte and I think you know it Stefan.

Tiia Johnson Art: I don't generally care to listen to long lectures, I prefer skimming written information to find what I'm looking for. But your voice and manner are so friendly and engaging that I really enjoyed and got more out of this than expected. I went through my phone and Instagram as you encouraged, but I'm not sure it helped me much to narrow down my wide range of interests! Realism & photography were my top scores in styles, although I've never considered photography as a saleable niche for myself, it scored high because it's so easy to take a lot of pictures compared to the time to compose and create a painting or drawing. Fantasy was the runner up there. In subject matter people, nature/wildlife, and scenery were almost a three way tie. So no closer to pinpointing what I'd actually want to paint forever without getting thoroughly sick of it. I'm not even counting clothing, costume and architectural design and manufacturing in various forms that I enjoy a great deal. As far as what I think I do best, probably animal wildlife. And Robert Bateman is a favourite, so wish I could meet him!

Thank you, this was really, really helpful. Upon thought, I considered all of the things I saw where I HAD to paint it, whether it was a person, a landscape, a garden, or water. But the thing is? I realized all of it was the human connection, whether to each other (especially children!) or to nature. But each thing had a story to tell, even if what I wanted to paint was a face. That face had a story and it made me excited to paint it, which to me tells their story. So thank you. I hadn't realized that until I saw this.

I love the way Stefan covers so many bases! The best critique I've ever had was by Stefan many years ago! I just recently saw his video on light! When painting in oils, I try to get as much depth as possible! Started to paint on "raised surfaces - similar to embossing". For a 3-D effect. Now it's more like sculpture underneath the painting! Talking about light angles, it's really a mind blowing experience, that's entirely different! I've been using epoxy "putty" and automotive feathering compound! On 8th inch plywood, for the sculpturing effect. REALLY ADDS TO THE EFFECT OF THE DEPTH!

so true....my niche is clearly VIPs in Popart....faces did fascinate me my whole life, always....so no miracle, my paintings are maybe 98 Percent Faces and ONLY 2 percent others (abstract, animals etc.)...and as I always loved colours, I started to mix faces with colours, abstract backgrounds with VIPs....make them colourful.....still totally fascinating me and will do so for a long time for sure...I am constantly about 3 motives behind, so I always know the 2 or 3 I will paint later.:-)

Ah, ok -- not too earth shattering really -- I started painting portals of buildings and the interaction of nature with man-made structures years ago when I started considering art while still working a "normal" job. Always have been drawn to architecture, details and how nature interacts and take over, particularly the forgotten corners of old or abandoned buildings. I tried figurative, still life but meh, they don't "sing" to me. My avatar is an example -- and this is what gets into shows and wins awards. Some subjects are prettier, so are sad and empty but the same theme seems to crop up. So there you have it :) And I will dabble in the occasional landscape and do figurative sketching for a change of pace.

When I first started painting I went through google and looked at a ll of the portrait paintings that were coming out that year. In Japan, China USA, London. At the end of that year I did not know exactly what I was doing but I had a very strong emotional attachment for a several kind of portraits. And also I knew the kind of portraits that you could sell without always painting commissions. Not sure if that makes sense? I am trying to meet gymnasts now because I paint gymnasts.

Thank you Stefan. I'm a nature lover too, and love painting animals. But my problem is that I don't have the opportunity to travel and photograph the exotic wildlife I'd like to paint, lest paint from life. I've been wondering if it's a viable option to find wildlife photographers and purchase their photos to paint from? Or maybe there's a government website where they might be free? I understand there may be copyright laws I'd have to adhere to. There's an endangered wildlife contest coming up that I'd like to try.
