Congrats! A FAI 1000k on pure thermals is a great accomplishment. I would like to suggest that you wait a bit to retract the gear; when you do it so low, you increase your possible workload if the rope breaks or the engine coughs. My approach was to wait until pattern altitude to retract, still early in the tow but with plenty of time to deal with an emergency. Unless it was the Open Cirrus with the hitch inside the landing gear :D

in the uk retracting the gear on tow would be considered very dangerous. you don't want to do anything else but focus on the tow until you release to prevent any chance for tug upset, and you absolutely want to have the gear down if the cable snaps or releases at that height. drag at that time is the least of your concerns. you have a big plane pulling you up and you tend to overtake it anyway.

It’s crazy, these modern gliders have a glide ratio of upwards of 50:1. I was trained to always aim to be steep on approach in a glider. The dive brakes (spoilers) are very effective at increasing your sink rate in these modern glass ships, and you don’t get a go-around! And on a long runway like this you’d want to land long so you don’t have to push the glider as far to park.
@chrismofer4 жыл бұрын
@@sircrapalot9954 I've been playing with RC sailplanes and got a 2-meter Radian, which doesn't want to come down without significant kinetic energy making it impossible to land at a tree-lined ball field. installed off the shelf spoilers and now it drops like a space shuttle on demand :)
