Thank you for the great video, a very nice view! I do have a question though: why do you both keep your FLARM on during close formation flying? This way you are constantly generating nuisance alarms, so you are unconsciously training your mind to ignore them. This is known as normalisation of deviance. There are two risks associated to that: 1) you will miss the FLARM alarms from an aircraft approaching your formation, and 2) even after breaking the formation, in case you do have a real alarm, your mind may possibly still filter it out. Instead, if the one glider would switch off FLARM during close formation flying, you won't have the nuisance alerts. The other glider would still receive alerts from other traffic, but now with a much higher probability of catching them. There are also two risks associated with this approach, but they can be mitigated: The first risk is that one aircraft now has no FLARM, so will not be alerted of incoming traffic. This risk can be mitigated by a) the non-FLARM pilot keeping extra good look-out (this should be the lead pilot since the trailing pilot has a higher workload already), and b) the FLARM pilot relaying alerts immediately via radio, using agreed vocabulary (e.g. "FLARM traffic, 10 o'clock, high). The second risk is that after breaking the formation, the non-FLARM pilot may forget to switch FLARM back on. This could be mitigated by agreeing a radio procedure between both pilots: eg. A:"breaking formation, confirm FLARM on.", B:"roger, FLARM is reactivated" Keep safe, and keep posting such nice videos!

The Flarm alert description in the end :D . And: 'It looked like one plane from behind.' Great content. I had also two very nice team flights not long ago. Some things are easier together, but you know how much concentration is needed when Stefan doesn't say a word for minutes. Nice to see that he always kept his airbrakes ready.

What an amazing sky, so much energy. At 3:06 a third glider is clearly visible on the left. It later looks to pull up and peel off also to the left. Not for me following that close, not enough experience but a great video.

Excelent video, very helpful for me, question, the LS3 can out speed easily the cirrus?, because in climb I saw that's is very even and I think the LS3 is heavier than the cirrus.
@SteFly3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the LS3 performs a lot better with the negative flap setting and at higher speed. Also the climb performance is slightly better
@CarlosMoreno-dq3kg3 жыл бұрын
I'm surprised, because is more heavy than the cirrus, very good aerodynamics it has.

Nice streets and flying in formation. Did you mixed up the flaps with airbreaks at 5:15, or was that on purpose?

Initially I wondered why you were not overtaking the Cirrus, then It occurred to me that you were not holding the flap handle, but the speedbrake and you were probably not using negative flaps. Also you were flying in his wake. I wonder how much difference that makes. Nice footage

Really nice video! You must have some crazy tight warning thresholds set on your flarm, most of the time it looks like you're about to kiss his tail, and yet the flarm stays relatively 'relaxed', mine would have been screaming at me in every language (figure of speech, i know flarms don't 'talk') for the whole time of that clip 😂

Correct. That was also my feeling at the WGC, that my LS3 didn't perform as it should. Uwes LS3 is a lot better... Anyhow when I use the negative flap position, even my LS3 outperforms the Std. Cirrus by far. There are many smaller aerodynamic things to check and improve. Also the sealing is not great yet.
@jme1043 жыл бұрын
@@SteFly For my LS3A , Dick Johnson recommended using négative flap setting above 105 km/h. I also tryied using flap 0° while thermaling, I didn't see any negative results from that .
