Had to wait 30 years to see this match and was worth it.

Very good match from Sanchez here and she played even better in US Open final a few weeks later

Yes, Arantxa played some of the best tennis of her career at the U.S Open finals that year. What was impressive about that win was that Steffi was also in dynamite form too in spite of her back problems that came up during the final. In fact, Arantxa's tennis was so inspired that I actually think she could have won that final anyways.

I remember that great US open final( very close match) and I suppose Graf got some good medication against back pain. We saw Nadal win the French Open with a big foot problem a few years ago. Anyway Graf and Sanchez have the best footwork in the women's game ,I would put Graf number one, men included, in that department .I saw her play at the French, and she was like à ballet dancer on the court. Beautiful.

@stacked7476 While I do think that Graf likely would have won that final if it hadn't been for her back acting up, let's give Arantxa come credit. I thought she played some of the most inspired tennis of her career in those second and third sets.

Canadian and US Opens were very great for her on 1992 and 1994. She got three out of the four posible titles. She beated Steffi thrice and Mónica once, and only lost to Monica at the 1992 USO final.

As a big Graf fan I take my hat off to asv here. She channeled the spirit of Steffi Graf mentally here to beat the OG herself of tennis psych strength 😃

Yes, ASV played some of the most inspired tennis of her career at both the Canadian Open and U.S Open that year. It's right up there with her level of play that she demonstrated at the 1989 French Open final, 1995 Wimbledon final, 1996 French Open final, and 1998 French Open final. I might also mention her match against Venus Williams at the 2000 Olympics as well. I thought she played amazingly well on that day even though she didn't win that match.

Don’t forget the 1994 Hamburg final. Easily the most dramatic match of the year. The tennis Sanchez played from the start of May to the start of November in that six month period was easily the best and most consistent of her career. Ironically it coincided when steffi’s confidence dropped off and she got injured. Still we saw some memorable battles between these two in 1995 and 1996 when they weee both playing well, the only difference was Graf got her confidence and back. Fun times.

@gk891 in that Olympic match she did the same thing as here, with the racket slipping out of her hand when she served and it broke 😂

The courts seemed to be so much slower in Montreal than Toronto, and that was reflected in Arantxa's record at the Canadian Open. In Montreal, she won in 92 and 94 and was a finalist in 96 and 98. In Toronto, she only reached the final once (1989) and had a number of losses in early rounds.

ASV actually had a very positive head2head vs Steffi Graf in 1994, impressive! Just fact checked my statement mentioned above, it's / was a tie of 3:3 [Steffi Graf won the AUS Open final vs ASV, at the US Open, ASV beat SG; other WTA tourneys included San Diego, Delray beach, Hamburg, and of course the Canadian Open posted here by the nice Just tennis channel 2, plenty of great matches], and always thankful for positive comments!!!

1994 was the year Steffi looked like she had scoliosis. The way she twisted her body when she hit her forehand, the severe slice on her serve, the increased spin on her groundstrokes instead of the drive --- all uncharacteristic of her game. Things turned around the following year when she got her back issues resolved. Her technique evolved, too, becoming even more effortless.
@pierdomenicosommati443Ай бұрын
I think that the most critical part of her game here, was that it had become way too much predictable. Arantxa knew exactly where to go on almost a good 80% of Steffi's groundstrokes, which is really way too much, and can totally obliterate the huge difference in groundstrokes power. Plus, her reluctance to throw in a topspin backhand when really needed, had reached the maximum possible level here. Many points could have been finished quite easily with a drive backhand into the open court, while she continued to rally instead, and kept arantxa In play by slicing her backhands over and over, even when it was completely evident that she was probably gonna lose those rallies.

Those losses Steffi had to Arantxa in 1994 were similar to the losses she had to Gaby in 91 / 92. Steffi having leads but not able to capitalise. Arantxa played those matches like Gaby did too. Great retrieving, mixing up pace and spins, and finding ways to get to the net.

I like this kind of sideways angle that it’s being filmed at. You see more the spins they place on the ball. Too bad Steffi was in pain here. Aranxta had all the momentum going into 1995 and should have won those two slams, Wimbledon for sure! This musta been Steffis worst year ever on tour. I think Steffi looked the most beautiful here in 1994. Loved her look!my first ever tennis match I watched on tv was the ‘95 French final… ahh the memories looks like she saved 4 mps here!

@mimalikaliaАй бұрын
@franciscolaprida2133Ай бұрын
@planettennis2822Ай бұрын
@mimalikaliaАй бұрын
@mimalikaliaАй бұрын
