Welcome to India, one of the world’s most beautiful and diverse travel destinations. From the bustling streets of Mumbai and Kolkata, to historic forts in Rajasthan. From vibrant bazaars in Delhi to quiet villages in Himachal Pradesh and Odisha. Steeped in history and culture, while confidently embracing the 21st century, India is a country that can be explored for years, and will surprise you at every corner.
I traveled through India on three different trips, and in this video I will share with you my personal top 10 places to visit in this magnificent country. The footage in this mini documentary was mostly shot in 2014, and can function as a travel guide.

Here’s a brief overview of the content in this video:
We begin this journey in Amritsar, and more specifically in the mesmerizing Golden Temple. Located in the spiritual heartland of the Sikh community, this is one of India’s most famous icons. The nearby kitchen is also very interesting to visit, and don’t miss the Wagah border ceremony, where soldiers from both India and Pakistan perform an entertaining border closing show.
Rajasthan is a beautiful province that can be explored for weeks, with stunning hilltop forts and royal palaces, in places like Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Udaipur, and Jaipur. The bazaars and street markets, where many people do their (grocery) shopping, are also a joy to explore. After Rajasthan, we travel to Agra, to visit India’s tourism symbol, the awe-inspiring Taj Mahal.
Mumbai is one of India’s most dynamic and interesting cities. Often considered as the commercial capital of the country, the city bursts with energy and creativity. While there are many impressive buildings to admire (mosques, temples, colonial architecture), it’s the city’s atmosphere that really draws tourists and travelers to Mumbai.
Tamil Nadu is a distinctly different province from many others places in India, and is characterized by charming coastal villages, pilgrimage sites, and beautiful Hindu temples. The South Indian food is also delicious, and shouldn’t be missed. We travel onwards to Kolkata, thought of as a intellectual and cultural powerhouse. It’s a lively city, with stunning architecture, beautiful (flower) markets, and also modern shopping malls. Other places to visit are the British colonial Victoria Memorial, the horse racing tracks, and many parks where people play cricket all day long.
Dharamsala (or McLeod Ganj) is the seat of the Tibetan government in exile, and almost feels like a Little Tibet. This is where the Dalai Lama lives, and many monks and pilgrims regularly visit. Hyderabad, in central India, is an IT hub like Bangalore, and provides a great insight in the country’s growing digital economy.
Delhi is the political capital, and really a destination in itself. It’s a major business and transport hub and attracts people from all over India to work, study, and live. We finish this journey in Odisha province, an often overlooked region that boasts some of India’s most beautiful temple complexes, a welcoming attitude, and a relaxed beach vibe.

The greatness of India cannot be expressed in words. I am from Romania and I have loved India since I was 9 years old. Now I am 58 years old and I can say that although I have never been to India I actually live with the thought that I will get there as soon as possible. GOOD MORNING ! I don't want to upset anyone - I like all the countries in the world, but I love INDIA. There is a big difference between "liking" and "loving". So, I love India with all. And so, India is my favorite place on this Earth. For me, India is the home of the arts. I like this country both geographically and culturally, artistically. I like the people of India because they respect their original folk traditions (still unaltered by the waves of modernism or fashion). Thanks and I wish you all the best, with health and happiness, in peace ! Sincerely, Dinu, from Romania. NAMASTE ~ _ / | \ _

See you, dear @@stefhoffer... I am a man who likes to know many things in this world, in fields that I like and am interested in. And for this I search on the internet only in English first of all. Then in other languages that I know, because I'm polyglot. And if there are rarer words or international dialects, I do robot translations. I am interested in topics about art, culture, music, biology, geography, old steam locomotives, old cars, ships, submarines, plants and animals, etc. Then I explore the mountains and caves, religions, UFOs, and the general universe. I can't say I'm bored (except in my country, unfortunately). Only politics are "fashionable" here. And for me, politics is rubbish. And here, I had a "premonition" that, like my previous life, I was Indian. I already had experiences with "deja vu". There is a lot to explain in written words. I feel things that other people can't feel. I have more (good) friends in India than I have in my country, Romania. Thank you from my heart for your golden comment.

My favorite city in Rajasthan is Udaipur. As a descendant of Indians, after my retirement I would h’ve wanted to live in India for 6 months every year for the rest of my life to help poor people and children for a better life. But also to travel through India, I would have liked to live in Udaipur, the city with its beautiful lakes surrounded by mountains. Fate has decided otherwise. I will never forget the friendly and helpful Indians. India is a beautiful and mysterious country but also very busy. Spirituality comes from everywhere.

One city that is a must because of what it offers is Aurangabad. It is here you'll base yourself while seeing two of India's greatest wonders, Ellora and Ajanta Caves. Ellora is almost a whole thousand year old city carved into the side of a cliff. It central feature is a temple excavated from the stone, while the adjacent cave temples exhibit a level of artistry that is almost unimaginable; it is one of India's must-see sights, even above the Taj Mahal in my opinion. Ajanta is a series of Buddhist cave temples, an ancient artistic jewel box nestled in a sweeping valley with a waterfall on one side and peaceful rapids on the other. Inside these cave temples are intricate carvings and vibrant frescoes, some painted over 1,500 years ago! Aurangabad doesn't stop there...there is a miniature Taj Mahal, a fort (Daulatabad) which was built by taking a mountain and shaving the sides off it to create a moat, and a colorful central market district. The city also has a very intriguing history, being founded by an Ethiopian slave brought to India via the Arabian Sea slave trade and allowed to climb the ranks of power enough to become a general, establish a kingdom and found the city. If you're even more adventurous, visit Lonar, which is a massive meteor crater lake about 150km east of Aurangabad. It has a very intriguing geography, surrounded by small historic temples and even has tigers roaming around (yeah I guess beware of those).

India is so great, it is a superpower and an ideal country in people's hearts. I love it, despite a trip a few years ago when I first arrived in India and drank a sip of local drinking water, I suffered from diarrhea and was hospitalized for half a month.

Adding to this list .... You must visit Sikkim, Kashmir ( must visit) [ favourite of most Indians],Leh, Ladakh, Kerala ( must visit) [ In top list of most Indians]......... And remember you cannot complete India in 1 or 2 trips.... Even Indians cannot see full India in one life..... As India in itself is a whole world situated in just one nation

Stef, I only found your channel and became a subscriber fairly recently. Some of your videos have done well, but many are criminally underviewed. The image quality and style is really fantastic. Making these types of video is far harder than many people realise. You have inspired me to do better and watching your work has given me some good ideas. India remains a fascinating place, but not a country I would particularly like to visit! I really enjoy seeing it through your camera lens and mind's eye. Thanks for another great video.

@@stefhoffer An incredible amount of work! I live in Thailand and recently I've tried a few VLOG type videos on my other YT channel. For these I walk around quite a lot, but I notice that in your videos you always use a tripod and every clip is rock steady. This looks fantastic and has inspired me to try the same. I also try to narrate as I'm filming, but you seem to prefer voiceovers later on. This also works very well. I am learning a huge amount just by watching your videos and trying to follow your technique. Looking forward to seeing more of your tremendous work!

@@PhilUKNet Thanks a lot Phil, I'm glad that my work helps you in this way. I'm not sure static shots work for all audiences, but it's how I like to shoot a lot of footage. Honestly, also because it's part of my work as a freelance camera operator. I actually planned to mix tripod footage with some more vlog style/casual filming (what I tried in my Saudi videos), but then the pandemic started. KZbin can be a big experiment, and I encourage you to try out different techniques, and find your own style. Take care over there!
