Steinberger GR4 Running Restoration. R Trem repair.

Just bought this 1990's Steinberger GR4 guitar. it had suffered the all to common post problem that affects R Trems. My take as to why this happens is that your friendly local neanderthal decides to bottom out your trem to make the strings go all floppy. You cannot do that on these Trems. You may THINK you've got away with it, however the first thing you will notice after is that the tuning has gone funny, the lock doesn't engage and the trem is leaning up at the back more than usual. Why......because the pivot posts have been bent and, if your really lucky the spring post is also bent. This renders the trem useless as it can no longer operate within it's design tolerances. Luckily, repair options are available.

Great video, I too have a way to fix these bridges and posted a video. Glad we have two options for repairing these import bridges.

I have a Spirit which has the same trem, and dive bombing on it is the last thing I'd ever do. The trem on mine is much stiffer than say a floyd or a 6-screws strat bridge. I still apreciate it as a trem bridge though. I'm more used to bending string on trem bridge than fixed bridge.

Yes, they are stiffer than normal trems. I keep it to tasteful dips and light shimmers

Did they ever make NON-licensed R-trems? I mean, when the patent was still on ofc. I'm neanderthalin' on mine once in a while lol.

I have a Hohner Spirit and it looks to have the identical tremolo on it. I assume the same factory still makes them. You get cheap Chinese version badged Overlord of Music. You do now have other companies making really good quality version such as J Custom and even RWB Precision Engineering making brand new TransTrems.

@@ferncottageardentinny yeah, but seems like even the actually US-made GR4's had licensed ones, it's a bit weird! Fingers crossed for yours to not un-repair itself.
