Class 5 (11 years old) is a time when the children become physically able but don't yet have the heaviness or weight of teenage years. This balance of the lightness of childhood and growing physical potential is reflected in the Steiner -Waldorf Schools curriculum, in part, by a study of Greek Culture. This is integrated into the movement lessons with, among other activities, a practice of the core aspects of a traditional Greek Olympics. This includes the five main activities of running, jumping, simplified wrestling, discus and javelin. All events are practiced throughout the year culminating in a Steiner Olympic Games held in the grounds of Michael Hall School, UK.
The Steiner Olympic Games is now in its 21st year at Michael Hall. The event has grown over the years and now we have 27 schools, mainly from the UK with visiting schools from Poland and Germany. We have just under 400 children attending this year.
A key aspect of the Games is that all forms of conventional competition are removed, in other words there is no measuring, timing or recording of events. The children train, play and camp together for two days and then take part in the Games on the third day. Without the hindrance of who wins or throws the furthest the children are free to participate to their full potential, regardless of ability.
Each child is awarded a medal for the qualities they demonstrate throughout the three days. This could be strength, determination, grace, speed; real qualities that can be genuinely recognised.
The whole event is a strong experience for the children and helps to prepare them for the more physical challenges ahead.
